Book excerpt: 'Jesus Saves! Moses Invests!' are certainly two shocking sentences side by side, aren't they? When I first saw them presented as they are, I was confounded and conflicted, as I explain more fully in chapter one. But out of this confusion I came to more clarity on just what the Lord wanted me to know about savings and investments in several areas of my life including my finances. In the various chapters of this book I have attempted to cover a number of topics that can occur in one's life in reference to properly managing finances, possessions, positions, profits, and a host of other things that come our way when we 'buy up opportunities' as they are presented to us. I have learned through many years of living in good times and bad times, 'up' times and 'down' times that there is more to life than gathering an abundance of things in what the advertisers like to call the 'good life that you deserve.' I have been greatly blessed to have all that I need plus the extras . . . as the parable says 'enough and to spare.' It is the 'spare' that I talk about in this book. What to do with the 'extras' that I have been allowed to possess! Investing is a grand topic! It envisions planting and reaping a greater harvest! Abundance! More of everything! It promotes excitement in seeing little become much! Who doesn't thrill to having greater success with every investment? But as this happens, there are questions that arise. Questions like: What will I do with this surplus? How will I spend it or save it or invest it? Who should I trust to help me manage it? And a multitude of other considerations! Please know that this book is not an exhaustive study or even an attempt to share advice in the area of investments, but rather an agreement with the Lord that I would give my life full-time to the ministry of the Gospel, if He would help me to financially prosper enough to have a sufficient retirement in my latter years. We both have kept the terms of our agreement. My Lord is the best counselor-partner that anybody could ever have in this life and in the life to come!

Book excerpt: Jesus-Yeshua. The most influential Jew who ever lived. The most controversial Jew who ever lived. He has been called a rabbi, a rebel, a reformer, a religious teacher, a reprobate sinner, a revolutionary, a redeemer. Some have claimed he was a magician, others the Messiah. Some say he was a deceiver; others say he was divine. Who is this Jesus-Yeshua, and why are we still talking about him two thousand years later? Recently a prominent Orthodox Jewish rabbi presented a new version of Jesus, a "Kosher Jesus" that Jews can accept. By reclaiming Yeshua as a fellow Jew and rabbi, he has taken a very major and truly wonderful step in the right direction, but by re-creating Jesus, he has also robbed him of his uniqueness. The Real Kosher Jesus takes you on a journey to uncover the truth. It is a journey filled with amazing discoveries and delightful surprises, a journey that is sometimes painful but that ends with joy, a journey through which you will learn the real story of this man named Yeshua: the most famous Jew of all time, the Jewish nation's greatest prophet, the most illustrious rabbi ever, the light of the nations and Israel's hidden Messiah.

Book A Cultural History of Jewish Dress

Download or read book A Cultural History of Jewish Dress written by Eric Silverman and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cultural History of Jewish Dress is the first comprehensive account of how Jews have been distinguished by their appearance from Ancient Israel to the present. For centuries Jews have dressed in distinctive ways to communicate their devotion to God, their religious identity, and the proper earthly roles of men and women. This lively work explores the rich history of Jewish dress, examining how Jews and non-Jews alike debated and legislated Jewish attire in different places, as well as outlining the big debates on dress within the Jewish community today. Focusing on tensions over gender, ethnic identity and assimilation, each chapter discusses the meaning and symbolism of a specific era or type of Jewish dress. What were biblical and rabbinic fashions? Why was clothing so important to immigrant Jews in America? Why do Hassidic Jews wear black? When did yarmulkes become bar mitzvah souvenirs? The book also offers the first analysis of how young Jewish adults today announce on caps, shirts, and even undergarments their striving to transform Jewishness from a religious and historical heritage into an ethnic identity that is hip, racy, and irreverent. Fascinating and accessibly written, A Cultural History of Jewish Dress will appeal to anybody interested in the central role of clothing in defining Jewish identity.

Book excerpt: Ann Holmes seems an unlikely candidate for revelation. A sixteen-year-old runaway, she is an itinerant mushroom picker who lives in a tent. Her past has been hardscrabble. Then one November afternoon, in the foggy woods of North Fork, Washington, the Virgin comes to her, clear as day. Is this delusion, a product of her occasional drug use, or a true calling to God? Gradually word spreads, and thousands converge upon the already troubled town. For Tom Cross, an embittered logger who's been out of work since his son was paralysed in a terrible accident, the possibility that Ann's visions are real offers a last chance for him and his son. As Father Collins searches both his own soul and Ann's; as Carolyn struggles with her less than admirable intentions; as Tom alternates between despair and hope; Our Lady of the Forest combines suspense, grit and humour in a story of faith at a contemporary crossroad.
