Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Featured as One of Summer’s most anticipated reads by the Los Angeles Times, Vogue, Vulture, Entertainment Weekly, ELLE, Buzzfeed, and Bitch Media. From the author of I Don’t Want to Die Poor and in the style of New York Times bestsellers You Can’t Touch My Hair, Bad Feminist, and I'm Judging You, a timely collection of alternately hysterical and soul‑searching essays about what it is like to grow up as a creative, sensitive black man in a world that constantly tries to deride and diminish your humanity. It hasn’t been easy being Michael Arceneaux. Equality for LGBTQ people has come a long way and all, but voices of persons of color within the community are still often silenced, and being Black in America is…well, have you watched the news? With the characteristic wit and candor that have made him one of today’s boldest writers on social issues, I Can’t Date Jesus is Michael Arceneaux’s impassioned, forthright, and refreshing look at minority life in today’s America. Leaving no bigoted or ignorant stone unturned, he describes his journey in learning to embrace his identity when the world told him to do the opposite. He eloquently writes about coming out to his mother; growing up in Houston, Texas; being approached for the priesthood; his obstacles in embracing intimacy that occasionally led to unfortunate fights with fire ants and maybe fleas; and the persistent challenges of young people who feel marginalized and denied the chance to pursue their dreams. Perfect for fans of David Sedaris, Samantha Irby, and Phoebe Robinson, I Can’t Date Jesus tells us—without apologies—what it’s like to be outspoken and brave in a divisive world.

Book Even the Devil Quotes Scripture

Download or read book Even the Devil Quotes Scripture written by Robyn J. Whitaker and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We are meant to take the Bible seriously, not literally.” —from the Introduction In Even the Devil Quotes Scripture, Robyn J. Whitaker looks to the Bible as a guide to interpreting the Bible, and her findings breathe new life into our understanding and use of Scripture. As it turns out, the uses of Scripture within Scripture are flexible, open to frequent reinterpretation, and rarely literal. For instance, Ezra and Nehemiah reinterpret laws about whether Jews can marry foreigners in the wake of the Babylonian exile. Their contradiction of earlier traditions found in Deuteronomic law do not invalidate Scripture but rather represent its diverse applications for the prophets’ specific situations. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus presents a more demanding interpretation of Mosaic law in the Sermon on the Mount, while in Mark’s Gospel he all but ignores its prohibition of working on the Sabbath. Yet the common ethos of the two gospels prioritizes compassion over legalism. Ultimately, Whitaker ascertains one definitive characteristic of inner-biblical interpretation: love. After all, the Old Testament passage most frequently quoted in the New Testament is Leviticus 19:18: “Love thy neighbor.” Thus, Whitaker proposes a hermeneutic of love—a litmus test for the validity of a scriptural interpretation measured in charity. Ideal for any devoted reader of the Bible, Even the Devil Quotes Scripture opens our eyes to the Bible as a living, loving gift of God’s unfolding revelation.

This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first sustained conversation between Marxism, postcolonialism, and psychoanalysis in biblical studies This volume pursues critical readings of the Bible that put psychoanalysis into conversation with Marxist and postcolonial criticism. In these essays psychoanalysis provides a way to mediate between Marxism's materialist groundings and postcolonialism's resistance against empire. The essays in the volume illuminate the way empire has shaped the biblical text by looking at the biblical texts' silences, ruptures, oversights, over-emphases, and inexplicable elements. These details are read as symptoms of a set of oppressive material relations that shaped and continue to haunt the text in the ascendancy of the text in the name of the West. Features: Essays and responses from multiple perspectives and geographical locations, including Africa, Australia, Oceania, Latin America, and North America Psychoanalysis that considers how the traumas of colonialism manifest both materially and psychically Close readings of biblical texts

Book The Church The Gospel and Culture

Download or read book The Church The Gospel and Culture written by John Thornhill and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2024-10-31 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Thornhill (1929-2019), born in Brisbane, Australia, was educated at Marist Brothers Ashgrove and St John's College Woodlawn NSW. After entering the Society of Mary (Marist Fathers), he was chosen for doctoral studies and ordained in Rome in 1955. John's life was mainly in theological ministry-in teaching and guiding seminary students, as an author, theological consultant and in Adult Faith Education. He was, in turn, Superior of the Marist Seminary, Director of Sydney's Aquinas Academy, a member of the Provincial Council. He published books and many articles. He had a special interest in the Church, Christology, the faith / culture relationship, all within an overall pastoral framework. This collection of articles captures the scope (and development) of his theological concerns over many years. Especially valuable and illuminating is the opening chapter in which we are invited to share with John has he reflects on his theological journey. John Thornhill SM was one of Australia's most distinguished and respected theologians, known and loved for his dedication to the Catholic community, his gentleness and kindness, and his zeal for the Gospel. Apart from his several books, including Sign and Promise: A Theology of the Church for a Changing World (1988), and Making Australia: Exploring Our National Conversation (1992), John contributed many articles to theological debate, and Thomas Ryan sm and ATF Press have done us and John's legacy a fine service in gathering together some of these articles in this volume. The essays collected here bear witness to key concerns of John's theological and pastoral work: the centrality of Jesus and his Gospel, the proclamation of the good news, to Christian faith; ecumenism, including a grateful recognition of Protestantism's emphasis on the Gospel of salvation; awareness of cultural and historical circumstances, and the imperative for the Church to understand and creatively respond to the concrete contexts that its members inhabit; the centrality of Scripture to Christian faith, and the importance of a theology of Scripture in the life of the Church; a theology that engages at the highest intellectual level with key currents of thought, and, as an 'open orthodoxy', is receptive to whatever is true and life-giving in them. This collection reveals the heart of John's theological vocation: to bring thought and scholarship to the service of believers, to enable the Gospel to come alive in their midst. John's Marist charism emphasises a quiet, receptive presence to God: in these articles we are given some of the fruits of his own attentive presence, for the sake of serving and accompanying the pilgrim Church.

Book Early Christian Witnesses

Download or read book Early Christian Witnesses written by and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2022-11-20 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles and talks included in this collection cover fifty years of theological engagement, the primary focus being on education for ministry in Australia and abroad. Despite the diversity of topics, such as hermeneutics, New Testament theology, preaching, ecumenical relations, and early church history, there is a connecting concern to listen to the unique voices of early Christian witnesses as foundational for the faith and the apostolic claims of the church in its present-day witness. The publication of these essays has been suggested for some time. Despite my reluctance to reissue articles written over a period of more than five decades, I have relented in the hope that there will be enough to engage the interest of a variety of readers, and not only former students in seminaries and theological colleges in Australia and various places overseas. Included here are mainly articles written specifically for publication in journals, but also lectures and talks to various groups of clergy, lay people, and theological students. Of prime concern has always been the explication of the Christian faith according to its earliest witnesses in the early church of apostles and martyrs. Faith remains attested and lived, approved not proven.

Download or read book Sex Then and Now written by William Loader and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the biblical authors and the people of their time view sex and sexual issues? This book takes the reader into their world. It offers a careful reading of these ancient texts and how they would have been understood in the context of their time. Did they see sex positively or as something dangerous? How did they view marriage? How do their views of marriage relate to the way most people see marriage today? What were the understandings of human nature that underpinned their discussions of appropriate and inappropriate sexual behavior? How did they view sexual relations between people of the same gender? Listening to biblical writers alongside what others were saying at the time, this book takes these texts seriously. By providing information about sex then it offers the reader a basis for discussing sex now and for approaching issues that have continued to create consternation, confusion, and often conflict in today’s world. At the same time, it provides for possibilities of seeing continuity and appreciating the richness and blessing of human sexuality.

Book The Making of Modern German Christology 1750 1990 Second Edition

Download or read book The Making of Modern German Christology 1750 1990 Second Edition written by Alister E. McGrath and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-08-26 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Making of Modern German Christology' is a reliable and readable introduction to the central themes and personalities of modern German Christology. Germany and northern Switzerland have been the source of a fertile theological tradition since the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century. Moreover, the Enlightenment seems to have had its deepest theological impact in Germany and on one area of theology in particular: the person and work of Christ. Now that chapter in church history seems to be coming to a close with a shift in theological emphasis away from the Continent to North America. This book, revised and updated from an earlier British edition, is therefore a survey of that major chapter in modern theology for students and informed laypeople.
