Book Robert E Lee

Download or read book Robert E Lee written by Allen C. Guelzo and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A WALL STREET JOURNAL BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • From the award-winning historian and best-selling author of Gettysburg comes the definitive biography of Robert E. Lee. An intimate look at the Confederate general in all his complexity—his hypocrisy and courage, his inner turmoil and outward calm, his disloyalty and his honor. "An important contribution to reconciling the myths with the facts." —New York Times Book Review Robert E. Lee is one of the most confounding figures in American history. Lee betrayed his nation in order to defend his home state and uphold the slave system he claimed to oppose. He was a traitor to the country he swore to serve as an Army officer, and yet he was admired even by his enemies for his composure and leadership. He considered slavery immoral, but benefited from inherited slaves and fought to defend the institution. And behind his genteel demeanor and perfectionism lurked the insecurities of a man haunted by the legacy of a father who stained the family name by declaring bankruptcy and who disappeared when Robert was just six years old. In Robert E. Lee, the award-winning historian Allen Guelzo has written the definitive biography of the general, following him from his refined upbringing in Virginia high society, to his long career in the U.S. Army, his agonized decision to side with Virginia when it seceded from the Union, and his leadership during the Civil War. Above all, Guelzo captures Robert E. Lee in all his complexity--his hypocrisy and courage, his outward calm and inner turmoil, his honor and his disloyalty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morris Venden is best known in the Adventist Church for the sensible answers he gives to the questions people ask about how to make Christianity work in real life-such as:Why do other people always seem to get answers to their prayers, but I never do?Why should I expect answers to my prayers? The Bible says that God won't answer the prayers of a sinner. There's something I really want, but doesn't God get tired of hearing me ask for it over and over?Saying "Thy will be done" shows a lack of faith. Wouldn't we get more answers to prayer if we just told God what we want and then really believed we'd get it?Is God angry with me? Is that why He won't answer my prayer? In The Answer Is Prayer Venden responds to these and many other questions, both from the Bible and the writings of Ellen White. And, as always, he shows that underlying everything else is learning to know Jesus as a Friend. - The problem With PrayerKinds of PrayerWhy Pray?Arguing With GodIntercessory PrayerConditions to Answered PrayerPrayer and Cherished SinPrayer and Overcoming Prayer, Faith, and PromisiePrayer for HealingPersistence in PrayerWhen God SpeaksPrayer and FastingThy Will Be DonePray and WorkPrayer and PraiseWhy Things Get Worse When We Pray

Book Moses Jesus and the Trickster in the Evangelical South

Download or read book Moses Jesus and the Trickster in the Evangelical South written by Paul Harvey and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Harvey uses four characters that are important symbols of religious expression in the American South to survey major themes of religion, race, and southern history. The figure of Moses helps us better understand how whites saw themselves as a chosen people in situations of suffering and war and how Africans and African Americans reworked certain stories in the Bible to suit their own purposes. By applying the figure of Jesus to the central concerns of life, Harvey argues, southern evangelicals were instrumental in turning him into an American figure. The ghostly presence of the Trickster, hovering at the edges of the sacred world, sheds light on the Euro-American and African American folk religions that existed alongside Christianity. Finally, Harvey explores twentieth-century renderings of the biblical story of Absalom in William Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom and in works from Toni Morrison and Edward P. Jones. Harvey uses not only biblical and religious sources but also draws on literature, mythology, and art. He ponders the troubling meaning of “religious freedom” for slaves and later for blacks in the segregated South. Through his cast of four central characters, Harvey reveals diverse facets of the southern religious experience, including conceptions of ambiguity, darkness, evil, and death.

Book Jesus and Scripture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas J. Parker
  • Publisher : James Clarke & Company
  • Release : 2024-02-29
  • ISBN : 0227179854
  • Pages : 151 pages

Download or read book Jesus and Scripture written by Thomas J. Parker and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the New Testament writers, the Old Testament scriptures and the teachings of Jesus were key sources of authority and influence. When these influences are considered alongside each other, each can illuminate the other, deepening the New Testament writers' presentation of Jesus and our understanding of their interpretations. In Jesus and Scripture, Tom Parker examines the way in which Hebrews, James, and 1 and 2 Peter deal with these two different sources of authority, how they relate to each other, and what shifts have occurred historically and theologically within the writing of these texts. Treating the four epistles methodologically, Parker examines the particular ways in which each writer draws on the Hebrew scriptures. Ultimately, he argues convincingly that the nascent Jesus tradition, particularly via oral routes, influenced the way the Old Testament was processed by these various New Testament writers.

Book Sound Mapping the New Testament Second Edition

Download or read book Sound Mapping the New Testament Second Edition written by Margaret E. Lee and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ancient world, writings were read aloud, heard, and remembered. But modern exegesis assumes a silent text. According to Margaret Lee & Brandon Scott, the disjuncture between ancient and modern approaches to literature obscures the beauty and meaning in writings such as the New Testament. Further, the structure of an ancient Greek composition derives first from its sounds and not from the meaning of its words. They argue that sound analysis, analysis of the signifier and its audible dimension, is crucial to interpretation. Sound Mapping the New Testament explores writing technology in the Greco-Roman world, then turns to ancient Greek literary criticism for descriptions of grammar as a science of sound and literary composition as a woven fabric of speech. Based on these perspectives and a close analysis of writings from the four gospels, Paul, and Q, Sound Mapping the New Testament advances a theory of sound analysis that will enable modern readers to hear the New Testament afresh. The second edition reprints the first edition with a new introduction that reviews a decade of sound mapping scholarship and argues for the continued necessity of sound mapping for New Testament interpretation.

Book Jesus and Myth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter John Barber
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2021-02-15
  • ISBN : 1725253968
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Jesus and Myth written by Peter John Barber and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Jesus mythological? And is he a mere product of his cultural milieu? Through narratological and social-scientific analysis of the gospel account, Barber systematically demonstrates that there are two opposing patterns structuring the gospel. The first is the pattern of this world, which is the combat myth, with a typical sequence of motifs having mythological meanings. It is lived out by everyone else in the accounts except Jesus, because this pattern of the world is the pattern of myth-culture, which is the pattern of the old Adam and sin nature. The pattern of Jesus is the pattern intended for Adam to walk in, and is the unique pattern of the new Adam, Jesus Christ. Jesus's pattern inverts the sequence and subverts the significance of each and every motif and episode of the myth-culture's pattern. Barber shows that Jesus's "failure" to conform to this world's mythological pattern establishes that he is not mythological, and not a product of his culture. As the apostle Peter states, ". . . we did not follow cleverly devised tales [myths] when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty" (2 Pet 1:16).
