Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coffee With Jesus is a daily devotional, each day (for an entire year) concentrating on one short passage (usually only one verse) with a short thought concerning the passage. Along with this is something to think on: whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report; and in everything give thanks. Every seven days these things to think about are repeated, making every Monday of the year (for example) a day you think about something lovely. It is amazing how purposefully turning your mind to think on these things can positively affect your entire day. Beginning the day with Jesus and coffee is a delightful way. (If you are not a coffee drinker, tea may be substituted--or even soda or water, for that matter--instead of coffee. But there is no substitute for Jesus.)

The quiet times spent with him are some of our most teachable moments if we speak from the heart and then prayerfully anticipate his response. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featured as a "This Week's Reading/What We're Loving" pick at The Paris Review Named the Best Music-Related Book of 2014 by Joel Gausten "If you're a Jesus Lizard fan or a David Yow devotee, you're sure all over this. But even if you've never heard of the band, the book stands as one of the best ways to experience being in a tight, cohesive band. You get everything except the sweat, spilled beer, and blood. It's a fun ride, and the closest thing possible to getting in the van with these guys." --Mother Jones "The Jesus Lizard Book is a beautiful document of a band that wasn't afraid to be abrasive, chaotic, brutal, and sometimes, ugly." --The Chicago Tribune/Printers Row "These guys deserve to pat themselves on the back...If the spectacular photography in The Jesus Lizard Book is to be believed, their shows resembled nothing more than that scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom where some poor dude has his still-beating heart removed in an elaborate ritual." --The Paris Review "As a reader, you don’t need to hear the songs to appreciate the story--and Book delivers the band right to your coffee table loud and clear." --BoingBoing.net "The gorgeously crafted, 176-page hardcover Book...dives deep and candidly into the Jesus Lizard's first decade and touches a bit on that 2009 coda, too. Through many thousands of words, hundreds of photos, and collected ephemera, it celebrates the sweat, menace, humor, musicianship, lasting power, and genitals of one of the best bands ever coughed up by the rock underground." --The Village Voice "Book is a valuable document that brings us back to the era when artists were conditioned to practice the art of self-defense." --Pitchfork "A series of essays and photos that illuminates the Jesus Lizard--humorous, jolting, sometimes surprisingly moving." --The Chicago Tribune "If there is any recurring theme within the 176 pages of the newly released The Jesus Lizard Book it's this: The Chicago-grown noise rockers will be remembered as one of the greatest live bands to ever grace--or very well desecrate--the stage." --Chicago Sun-Times "Impressively candid, informed and informative history of a remarkable group of musicians. A 'must read' for their legions of appreciative fans...Highly recommended." --Midwest Book Review "Even if you're unfamiliar with or disinterested with the band's music, Book makes for an intriguing exploration of the alternative music scene of the '90s--a short burst in time when a band as gloriously odd as The Jesus Lizard could do whatever they wanted to do and get a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow." --Joel Gausten The Jesus Lizard Book is a coffee table affair of exclusive photography, art, and other imagery with written pieces by all four members of the seminal indie rock band the Jesus Lizard. The layout is stylish and elegant, particularly in contrast with the harshness of much of the band's music. Included are many Polaroids by David Wm. Sims, a delicious recipe by David Yow, a concise list of every show the Jesus Lizard played, and writings by two producers who recorded the band--Steve Albini and Andy Gill. There is biographical material of each member that covers childhood to the demise of the group. Other contributors include, Mike Watt, Alexander Hacke, Steve Gullick, Rebecca Gates, Jeff Lane, Sasha Frere-Jones, KRK, Bernie Bahrmasel, and many more.

Book The Virtual Body of Christ in a Suffering World

Download or read book The Virtual Body of Christ in a Suffering World written by Deanna A. Thompson and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a wired world where 24/7 digital connectivity is increasingly the norm. Christian megachurch communities often embrace this reality wholeheartedly while more traditional churches often seem hesitant and overwhelmed by the need for an interactive website, a Facebook page and a twitter feed. This book accepts digital connectivity as our reality, but presents a vision of how faith communities can utilize technology to better be the body of Christ to those who are hurting while also helping followers of Christ think critically about the limits of our digital attachments. This book begins with a conversion story of a non-cell phone owning, non-Facebook using religion professor judgmental of the ability of digital tools to enhance relationships. A stage IV cancer diagnosis later, in the midst of being held up by virtual communities of support, a conversion occurs: this religion professor benefits in embodied ways from virtual sources and wants to convert others to the reality that the body of Christ can and does exist virtually and makes embodied difference in the lives of those who are hurting. The book neither uncritically embraces nor rejects the constant digital connectivity present in our lives. Rather it calls on the church to a) recognize ways in which digital social networks already enact the virtual body of Christ; b) tap into and expand how Christ is being experienced virtually; c) embrace thoughtfully the material effects of our new augmented reality, and c) influence utilization of technology that minimizes distraction and maximizes attentiveness toward God and the world God loves.

Download or read book Jesus Coffee Fishing written by Michelle McCaleb and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having a day where nothing is planned, no "to do" list is required, and no job is demanding our time, is a blessing. God wants us to have days where we can enjoy ourselves. Days with coffee and fishing are great, but God wants to be included in that day also. Jesus, coffee, and fishing, now that is a great day! God said to His disciples, "follow me and I will make you fishers of men." God wants us to enjoy fishing and he wants us to fish for men. When we fish for men, there is a joy that comes with that. It is God's presence that changes us on the inside. His Spirit can do more for us in one second than we can do for ourselves in a lifetime. There is a peace that comes only from God. In the stillness of the quiet morning, coffee in hand, watching the sun rise, whether on land or water, it is God who changes us on the inside. May His Spirit be present in your life, and His presence be seen everywhere you go. Just like a coffee cup holds coffee, we can be a vessel full to over flowing with His presence. May God bless you with His presence, a good cup of coffee, a great day fishing, the desire to invite a friend to join you, and a boldness to share with them your testimony. It is my prayer that everyone reading this book, will come to know the Lord more every day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus counted many women among his closest followers during his earthly ministry. He encountered, forgave, and healed women, including the woman at the well, the hemorrhaging woman, and the woman caught in adultery. And their lives were changed forever. Our lives are also changed when we spend time with Jesus in Eucharistic adoration. In Draw Close to Jesus: A Woman’s Guide to Eucharistic Adoration, Merridith Frediani offers women heartfelt, practical guidance for meeting Jesus in adoration and allowing him to transform us. Containing reflections, encouragement, passages from Sacred Scripture and the Catechism, as well as stories from the saints, this book is divided into five helpful sections that can be read in any order: An introduction to Eucharistic adoration for beginners Going deeper in understanding God’s greatness, his mercy, and his abundant love The fruits received from a closer relationship with Jesus Facing obstacles in our prayer life The richness of the Catholic Faith God calls to us in the depths of our hearts. He wants us to come to him and rest. We do not need to bring anything; we just need to show up. He knows the world is pulling us in many directions, and our many responsibilities can be overwhelming. He knows we make mistakes, yet he keeps inviting us. When we come to him, we open ourselves to the one who loves us most deeply. We bring him our empty vessel, and he fills it. We adore him, and he loves us back — wholly and completely — for no other reason than that we are his.
