Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ the Divine Man, His Life and Times If any apology be needed for adding another to the various lives of Christ already before the public, it may be well to state how far this little book occupies any independent ground of its own. The object of the writer has been to make some small contribution to the moral and spiritual history of the Life of lives, and this in some especial relation to missionary work and the contact of Christianity with non-Christian religions. "The ethical," as Prof Kuenen well says, "is the universal human." Ethical and spiritual sequences of cause and effect have been especially before the writers mind. The Gospel history is "a history, which in every part of it," as Weiss says, "must be considered in the light of Him who transcends all history." The superhistorical relations of the historical life have been touched upon in some of their bearings upon the past, present, and future of Christianity. Even Keim, from whose point of view the present writer wholly differs, while gladly acknowledging his great ability and learning, and not infrequent reverence of tone and enthusiasm of humanity, affirms of Christ's life that it is "bounded at its circumference by the human limitations of His age, in its centre exalted above all." Such language may imply nothing but hero worship, but it is at all events a recognition of the incomparable grandeur of Christ's life and character. While the moral and spiritual aspects of the Life have been placed in the foreground, every effort has been made to present the physical and social environment briefly, yet accurately, in the light of modern research. In this connection the archaeological and geographical labours of the Palestine Exploration Society have been largely drawn upon, and the most recent records of travel, especially those of Captain Conder, Mr. Lawrence Oliphant, and Dr. Selah Merrill. Upon the whole, the greatest obligations are due to Dr. Edersheim His wealth of Rabbinical lore, his great theological erudition, his deep sympathy with Israel, springing from the strongest of all sources, the fountain of blood relationship, and his true spirituality of touch, place his work, in the writers estimate, at the head of all the contemporary literature of the subject. Book excerpt: At the time of Jesus' birth, the world was full of gods. Thousands of them jostled, competed, and merged with one another. In Syria, ecstatic devotees castrated themselves in the streets to become priests of Atargatis. In Galilee, holy men turned oil into wine, healed the sick, drove out devils, and claimed to be the Messiah. Every day thousands of people were flocking into brand-new multiethnic cities. The ancient world was in ferment as it underwent the first phase of globalization, and in this ferment, rulers and ruled turned to religion as a source of order and stability. To explore the power that religious belief has had over societies through the ages, Selina O'Grady takes the reader on a dazzling journey across the empires of the ancient world and introduces us to rulers, merchants, messiahs, priests, and holy men. Throughout, she seeks to answer why, amongst the countless religious options available, the empires at the time of Jesus "chose" the religions they did. Why did China's rulers hitch their fate to Confucianism? Why was a tiny Jewish cult led by Jesus eventually adopted by Rome's emperors? The Jesus cult, followed by no more than one hundred people at the time of his death, should, by rights, have disappeared in a few generations. Instead it became the official religion of the Roman Empire. Why did Christianity grow so quickly to become the predominant world religion? And Man Created God, an important, thrilling and necessary new work of history, looks at why and how religions have had such an immense impact on human history, and in doing so, uncovers the ineradicable connection between politics and religion—a connection that still defines us in our own age.

Download or read book Son of Man written by Henry H Harris and published by Inchrist Press. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would You Like to Know Jesus as Those Closest to Him Did? There are many books describing the life and times of Jesus. This biography puts no words in Jesus's mouth other than his own-those recorded in the Bible by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. This account of Christ's ministry years unfolds in chronological order and stands you squarely next to Jesus as he walks a path that leads to a cross, putting flesh and blood on his experiences and teachings. Son of Man: A Biography of Jesus arranges the Gospels in a narrative arc with a clear beginning, middle, and end. It reorders the nonlinear storyline of the Gospels and tells the story chronologically to help you see how, and maybe more importantly, why things unfolded as they did. To create the you-are-there feel it is written in present tense and Jesus's story is told in the context of his culture. The geography, climate, politics, racism, social norms, religion, traditions, economics, morality, language, and customs of the second temple era play key roles in this narrative. What emerges is a holistic, historically accurate dramatization that provides a 360-degree view of Jesus and his world. Through this book, you can take a trip through time and sit at the feet of the Son of Man. No fictionalized elements or dialog have been added. All events and quotations are taken from the texts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Acts. All of Jesus's recorded words and actions are included, and duplicate accounts have been harmonized. Recent books about the life of Christ have been skeptical of the Bible and have used Jewish and Roman texts as their primary sources. Religious and secular history books provide valuable insights into Jesus's world, but to understand the man himself, the best sources are the ancient narratives written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. An appendix is included to help Bible students study Jesus's ministry years chronologically, pericope by pericope. For deeper research, Old Testament passages that are relevant to each event are cited. If you are a student of Jesus's life and times, or a follower of Jesus and his teachings, you will find yourself looking at Jesus with new eyes and new understanding. And you will gain a greater appreciation for what it must have taken for Jesus to do what he did: embody the Son of God in the Son of Man. "Harris's work takes complex events in the life of Jesus and explains them in the same simple way Jesus often explained complex events to the people of His own day. This is a fresh look at Jesus in a way that benefits both old scholars, new believers, and those who are just curious.Easy to pick up. Hard to set down." -TONY LISTON, pastor of Adventure Christian Community, Davenport, Iowa "At first I thought, 'A biography of Jesus...why?' Henry Harris has done a marvelous job of pulling together the Gospel accounts, adding both commentary and color that, in a very reader-friendly style invites us to take a freshly prepared look at the old, old story. As a pastor, I can see giving out copies to new converts and seekers, letting Jesus's life story kindle in them a desire to discover more in the treasure chest that is the Bible." -RICK LAWRENSON, pastor of Nags Head Church, Nags Head, North Carolina "Son of Man is grounded in the Gospels and bolstered by just the right amount of cultural context, but is not afraid to take some risks to tell the story of Jesus in a modern and intuitive way. This makes it a great read for the beginner who desires a fuller, more chronological account, but also for the veteran who wishes to see the story with fresh eyes." -ED TAYLOR, pastor of Quest Church, Arlington Heights, Illinois"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author and Bible expert Bart Ehrman reveals how Jesus’s divinity became dogma in the first few centuries of the early church. The claim at the heart of the Christian faith is that Jesus of Nazareth was, and is, God. But this is not what the original disciples believed during Jesus’s lifetime—and it is not what Jesus claimed about himself. How Jesus Became God tells the story of an idea that shaped Christianity, and of the evolution of a belief that looked very different in the fourth century than it did in the first. A master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, Ehrman reveals how an apocalyptic prophet from the backwaters of rural Galilee crucified for crimes against the state came to be thought of as equal with the one God Almighty, Creator of all things. But how did he move from being a Jewish prophet to being God? In a book that took eight years to research and write, Ehrman sketches Jesus’s transformation from a human prophet to the Son of God exalted to divine status at his resurrection. Only when some of Jesus’s followers had visions of him after his death—alive again—did anyone come to think that he, the prophet from Galilee, had become God. And what they meant by that was not at all what people mean today. Written for secular historians of religion and believers alike, How Jesus Became God will engage anyone interested in the historical developments that led to the affirmation at the heart of Christianity: Jesus was, and is, God.

Book What Did Jesus Look Like

Download or read book What Did Jesus Look Like written by Joan E. Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons, and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and pristine linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernized and untrue to historical reality? This question continues to fascinate. Leading Christian Origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. He may even have had short hair.
