Book Toward a Theology of Inculturation

Download or read book Toward a Theology of Inculturation written by Aylward Shorter and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-01-30 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Inculturation' is a word come only recently into theological language, having its origin and impetus in a revolution in the perception of Christian mission--even of Christian identity. 'Toward a Theology of Inculturation' is the first book to bring together the many strands of current and historical Catholic thought on what might be called a theology of a multicultural church. Inculturation, Shorter argues, is the recognition that faith must in effect become culture to be fully received and lived. In the course of a wide-ranging discussion, the author explores the intimate relationship between inculturation and theology, focusing in particular on scripture, the history of Òmissions (especially in Africa), and contemporary Catholic thought. Shorter concludes with an exploration of the future of the church--a multicultural church. 'Toward a Theology of Inculturation' offers a substantive explication of what inculturation is, what it is not, how and when it occurs, and what its limits are or should be.

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2009-02-16

Download or read book Saint Joseph written by Leonardo Boff and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-02-16 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Saint Joseph Leonardo Boff seeks to provide a vigorous critique and theological analysis of Saint Joseph and in so doing attempts to undo historical misconceptions, misunderstandings, and cliches that surround the figure of Joseph. The book provides a comprehensive view of the topic as it takes into account biblical references, including the apocrypha, church tradition, papal edicts, liturgical expressions, and various viewpoints proposed by theologians. Boff is also concerned with updating the figure of Saint Joseph; his first step in this direction is to provide a clear understanding of the life of Joseph as an artisan, husband, father, and educator. He then deals with the issue of the importance of Saint Joseph for current issues concerning family and fatherhood. Lastly, Boff argues that Saint Joseph helps us to understand new facets of the mystery of God, and the author does this through his argument concerning the order of hypostatic union, where, according to his argument, there is a relation between Jesus and the Son, Mary and the Holy Spirit, and Joseph and the Father. Boff seeks here to fill a gap in the theological literature, given that theologians have concentrated their efforts on Jesus and the Son and Christology, and Mary and the Holy Spirit and Mariology; but these same theologians have, by and large, given very little time to the figure of Saint Joseph and the Father and Josephology.

Book Fully Human in Christ

    Book Details:
  • Author : Todd H. Speidell
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2016-11-08
  • ISBN : 1498296386
  • Pages : 168 pages

Download or read book Fully Human in Christ written by Todd H. Speidell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas F. Torrance's theology included a thoroughgoing, albeit implicit, ethic of reconciliation. It focused on the personalizing and humanizing mediation of Christ in all realms of life--including not only a supposed private dimension of human life but also the social, historical, and political structures of human society and even of the cosmos itself. This book builds upon that vision of a Christian ethic radically rooted in God's grace, which encompasses, sustains, and transforms the entire human and created order. A trinitarian-incarnational social ethic does not begin with our human causes, projects, and agendas, however noble they might be, but with witness to the reconciling person and work of Jesus Christ for us.

Book Emerging Voices in Global Christian Theology

Download or read book Emerging Voices in Global Christian Theology written by William Dyrness and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-12-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are some new voices emerging in Christian theological conversation these days. They do not speak with American or Western European accents, but reflect their settings in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Since they come from many places, the theological questions they ask are not ones we are used to in the West. They are as likely to speak of ancestor worship or political oppression as they are of church growth or evangelism. One thing is clear: we cannot listen to their cries of hope (or despair) without being deeply moved. This book gives an opportunity to listen in to important conversations going on in different parts of the world. These Christian theologians do not respond to a common set of questions, but are setting their own agendas of theological discussion. With some general introductory comments, these pieces are meant to stimulate an appetite for further exploration. There seems little doubt that the major voices in theology in the next generation will share these non-western accents.

Book Divino Compa ero

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sammy Alfaro
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2010-09-01
  • ISBN : 1498271766
  • Pages : 180 pages

Download or read book Divino Compa ero written by Sammy Alfaro and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divino Companero explores the necessary foundations for constructing a Hispanic Pentecostal Christology. Although traditionally Pentecostal Christologies have been anchored in a two-nature Chalcedonian model, Alfaro proposes that Spirit-Christology is a more suitable paradigm for a Hispanic Pentecostal Christology, provided it is grounded in the experience, faith, and worship of its community and oriented toward liberative praxis. After reviewing the christological reflection of early Pentecostals and the contemporary turn to Spirit-Christology, Alfaro lays out the main components needed to construct a christological model born out of the Hispanic Pentecostal reality, rooted in the broader Pentecostal christological imagination, and informed by the Pentecostal way of doing theology. Following this method, Alfaro concludes the central metaphor of Hispanic Pentecostal Christology is El Divino Companero, for in their pilgrimage through this world it is Jesus, the Divine Companion, who through the Spirit guides and nurtures his followers on their way back home.

Book Catholic Dogmatic Theology a Synthesis

Download or read book Catholic Dogmatic Theology a Synthesis written by Nicolas Op Jean-Herve and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every discipline, including theology, requires a synthetic overview of its acquisitions and open questions, a kind of "topography" to guide the new student and refresh the gaze of specialists. In his Synthèse dogmatique, Fr. Jean-Hervé Nicolas, OP (1910-2001) presents just such a map of Thomistic theology, focusing on the central topics of Dogmatic Theology: The One and Triune God, Christology, Mariology, Ecclesiology, the Sacraments, and the Last Things. Drawing on decades of research and teaching, Fr. Nicolas synthetically presents these topics from a faithfully Thomistic perspective. While broadly and genially engaging the theological literature of the 20th century, he nonetheless remains deeply indebted to the Thomistic school that would have formed him in his youth as a theologian. This provides the reader with an unparalleled theological vision, masterfully bringing forth, at once, what is new and what is classical. Catholic Theology: A Dogmatic Synthesis will be published in English as a multi-volume work. In this volume, Fr. Nicolas discusses the mysteries of faith directly connected with the Redemptive Incarnation: the formation of orthodox Christological dogma in the course of the first centuries of the Church; the nature of the Hypostatic Union; the latter's effects in Christ's holiness, knowledge, and incarnate activity; the mariological mysteries connected to the divine maternity; the soteriological meaning of Christ's vicarious satisfaction; and the eschatological return of Christ in Glory. Serving as a professor for decades, including at the University of Fribourg, Fr. Nicolas was at once a profound scholar and a masterful pedagogue. Gathering the work of a lifetime into a single pedagogical narrative, Fr. Nicolas's Catholic Theology: A Dogmatic Synthesis provides a resource for students and scholars alike. In view of the hyper-specialization of theology today, this series of volumes provides readers with a synthetic and sapiential overview of the fundamentals of dogmatic theology from a robust and profound Thomistic perspective.

Book Christianity and Politics in Doe s Liberia

Download or read book Christianity and Politics in Doe s Liberia written by Paul Gifford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-16 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the role of Christianity in Liberia under the corrupt regime of Samuel K. Doe (1980-1990). Paul Gifford shows that, in general, Liberian Christianity--far from being a force for justice and human advancement--diverted attention from the cause of Liberia's ills, left change to God's miraculous intervention, encouraged obedience and acceptance of the status quo, and thus served to entrench Doe's power. This Christianity, devised in and controlled from the United States, thus furthered regional American economic and political objectives, which were designed to support Doe's rule.
