Book Jesus Christ and the Christian Character Classic Reprint

Download or read book Jesus Christ and the Christian Character Classic Reprint written by Francis Greenwood Peabody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the Christian Character When one turns with this new problem to the Gospels, he discovers with fresh surprise the ex traordinary richness and variety of the teaching of Jesus. Each period in history goes with its question to the simple record, and finds an an swer which seems written to meet the special problem of the time. In an age of theology the Gospels were a source of theological doctrine; in an age of ecclesiasticism they fortified the Church; in an age of emotionalism they kindled the flame of piety. The same adaptability is now discovered once more by the age of the Social Question. As others have found in the teaching of Jesus the key Of doctrine or organization or religious experience, so there is now delivered by the same teaching to the mind of the present age a key of the Social Question. Remote from the condition of the modern world as was the life of Jesus, and pri marily directed as was his teaching, not to social but to spiritual ends, he has much to say of social duty. His ethics are not individualist, atomic, a doctrine of the single soul; but organic, social, a doctrine Of the common life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Citizenship: Christian Character in Its Biblical Ideals, Sources, and Relations The eye, says an Old proverb, sees that which it brings with it the power of seeing. In himself Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever. But in the nature Of things, he grows upon men, as they grow in grace and truth and in the knowledge Of his will. The Spirit takes of the things of Christ and Shows them unto men, SO fast and SO far as they are able to bear them. Being a Christian in its inner Significance is the same from century to century but in its outward expression the Christian life means a very different thing from age to age. The new wine, the new glad life in Christ, which he imparts to all who believe in him, requires ever new and congenial modes Of expression. SO long as the new wine of the kingdom is being produced by the living and eternal vine Of truth, SO long will there be need Of new bottles for its reception and preservation. The vine is Old the wine is new and the bottles must be new. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Christ: An Interpretation The position taken in the book is, of course, frankly ethical, and as such in a large sense non sacramentarian. The character ideal in Christianity is regarded as the essential thing first, last, and-all of the time. Room is left for the mystical and spiritual element, but it is frankly recognized that the ethical ideal of Jesus, as embodied in practical living, is the one ultimate test of Christianity. The necessity for formal religion is fully conceded, as is the value of formal correctness in our interpreta tion of the teaching of Christ, but this formal ele ment is never exalted to a place where it supersedes the vital. Christian character is bigger than the Christian Church, big as the latter is. The church exists only to produce character, and, failing in this, is valueless either to the individual or to society. Herein lies a great warning for the church. When ever she ceases to inspire high and noble ideals in her members, she is already on the high road to decay. As the author of the Apocalypse puts it, she must repent and do her first works or else her candlestick will be taken out of its place. Book Essay on the Character of Jesus Christ

Download or read book Essay on the Character of Jesus Christ written by J. Carmichael and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essay on the Character of Jesus Christ: Considered as an Evidence of the Truth of the Christian Religion Adam in that wisdom by which he never spake as man spake; and in that elevation of mind.which suited such excellence' alone. Is it then possible to conceive that a being clothed: with virtue and excellences of every description could deceive those who are willing to give credit to his sayings? IS it' consistent with spotless purity to defile the conscience with deceit and falsehood with the most exalted devotion to God, n to establish will worship and idolatry; with benevolence to men to mislead them in their most important concerns with the greatest wisdom, to establish a groundless superstition; and can we suppose the greatest elevation of soul, compatible with the meanness of passing himself off for a being which he was'not, and claiming honours to which he had not the smallest' title Such suppositions are utterly incredible. If I we admit the truth of the records which the Apostles have given, we must admit the justice of the claims which are advanced, although we had no other evidence than the 'veracity' of Jesus himself who' urges them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Formation of the Christian Character: Addressed to Those Who Are Seeking to Lead a Religious Life; And Progress of the Christian Life; Being a Sequel to the "Formation of the Christian Character" I would even presume, further, to warn one class of readers, and that not a small one, against a danger which lurks even in their established respect for religion. That general regard for it, which grows out of the circumstances of education and the habits of society, may be mistaken for a religious state of mind; yet it is perfectly consistent with religious indifference. A man may sincerely honor, advocate, and uphold the religion of Christ on account of its general influence, its beneficial public tendency, its humane and civilizing consequences, without at all subjecting his own temper and life to its laws, or being in any proper sense a sub jcet of the peculiar happiness it imparts. This is perhaps not an infrequent case. Men need to be made sensible that religion is a personal thing, a matter of personal application and experience. Unless it is so considered, it will scarcely be an object of earnest pursuit, or of fervent, hearty interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Teachings: A Summary View of Christian Doctrine and Christian Character, Drawn From the Word of God This Text-book aims to present the doctrinal and practical teachings of the Bible in a form suited to the comprehension of the intelligent youth of our Church. It is to be borne in mind, that the book is intended for use in the Fifth Grade of a complete course of Biblical instruction, and that it presumes on the part of the pupil a somewhat advanced intelligence and an acquaintance with the four books which precede it in the series. Fifteen years may be taken as the average age at which the pupil is supposed to reach this stage of the Graded Series of instruction. The book presents Christian doctrine and Christian character, as both are drawn from the words of the Bible. It sums up the Biblical teachings concerning divine truth and human life, and presents the principles of the Christian religion both for the guidance of faith and intellect and for the formation of character. It endeavors to concentrate both the doctrinal and practical strength of God's Word, and to give the substance of dogmatics and ethics in Biblical and popular form with sufficient com prehensiveness to enable those who use it faithfully to give a reason of the hope that is in them, and to train up the youth to an appreciation of the substantial, adequate and life-controlling character of the doctrines of God's Word. Download or read book The Man Called Jesus Classic Reprint written by John P. Kingsland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Man Called Jesus IT is a matter of prime importance that the Christian should gain as true and deep an insight as he possibly can into the Character of Him whom he professes to adore and serve. The goal of the Christian life is the attainment of Christlikeness. But, if we are to try to be like Christ, we must know what He was like. Nay further, if we are to gain a true knowledge of God, we must learn to know Him through the Man who alone fully declares Him. We apprehend the Character of God, truly, only to the extent to which we have apprehended the Character of Jesus Christ. But though the witness of the Gospels has been before the world for eighteen centuries, it will hardly be seriously questioned by any thoughtful mind that we are still very far indeed from a true and thorough apprehension of Him whose life and teaching they so simply and graphically record. Book What Did Jesus Look Like

Download or read book What Did Jesus Look Like written by Joan E. Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons, and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and pristine linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernized and untrue to historical reality? This question continues to fascinate. Leading Christian Origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. He may even have had short hair.
