Book Bible Nobodies Who Became Somebodies

Download or read book Bible Nobodies Who Became Somebodies written by Lance Wubbels and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the lessons gained from the staggering success of The Prayer of Jabez is that even the most obscure biblical characters and stories have profound lessons to teach GodÕs people. The Bible is filled with many fascinating individuals who lived their lives in the shadowlands of insignificance. Tucked away here and there in the pages of sacred Scripture, we may have passed over them as irrelevant nobodies, yet many of them lived their lives in faith and obedience to God despite facing overwhelming odds. God included their stories in the Scriptures for a reason, and though we might consider them Bible nobodies, they truly were somebodies. We discover that God used people from all walks of life, not just the familiar superstars. The moments of destiny in the lives of these ordinary people will rekindle a spark of hope for that same destiny for our lives today. Fifty engaging biblical characters are set forth in ReaderÕs Digest-length readings, and each chapter is filled with insight, inspiration, and practical application. Compiled and significantly adapted or rewritten for todayÕs reader from the classic writings of numerous legendary Christian expositors, such as Charles Spurgeon and others, these readings provide timeless truth that is as relevant today as the day they were penned.

Book excerpt: What does a Hip-Hop artist, Waffle House waitress, tire salesman, and disabled girl have to do with discovering spiritual truth? What if embracing authentic Christianity is a journey of unlearning? Welcome to Jim Palmer's world! Don Miller meets Anne Lamott meets Brian McLaren in this tale of shedding religion and plunging into uncharted depths of knowing God. Jim Palmer, emergent pastor, shares his compelling off-road spiritual journey and the unsuspecting people who became his guides. "Perhaps God's reason for wanting me," writes Palmer, "is much better than my reason for wanting him. Maybe God's idea of my salvation trumps the version I am too willing to settle for. Seeing I needed a little help to get this, God sent a variety pack of characters to awaken me." For all those hoping there's more to God and Christianity than what they've heard or experienced, each chapter of Divine Nobodies gives the reader permission and freedom to discover it for themselves. Sometimes comical, other times tragic, at times shocking, always honest; Jim Palmer's story offers an inspiring and profound glimpse into life with God beyond institutional church and conventional religion. "I am tempted to say that Jim Palmer could well be the next Donald Miller, but what they have in common, along with an honest spirituality and extraordinary skill as storytellers, is a unique voice . . . Divine Nobodies is a delight to read, and it was good for my soul to read it." -BRIAN MCLAREN Author of The Secret Message of Jesus "You hold in your hands an amazing story of a broken man finding freedom in all the right places-in God's work in the lives of some extraordinarily ordinary people around him. You will thrill to this delightful blend of gut-wrenching honesty and laugh-out-loud hilarity, and in the end you'll find God much closer, the body of Christ far bigger and your own journey far clearer than you ever dreamed." -WAYNE JACOBSEN Author of Authentic Relationships

Book The Kingdom of God Is Green

Download or read book The Kingdom of God Is Green written by Paul Gilk and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-21 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, living in inner-city St. Louis, Paul Gilk asked his friends to explain why small farms were dying. The answers did not satisfy. Years of study followed. Through the reading of history, Gilk began to grasp the origins of both horticulture and agriculture, their blossoming into Neolithic agrarian village culture, and the impoundment of the agrarian village by bandit aristocrats at the formation of what we now call civilization. Getting a grip on the relationship between agriculture and civilization was one thing; but, as a person strongly influenced by Gospel stories, Gilk also wanted to know what the connection might be between the kingdom of God proclamation in the canonical Gospels and the peasant world from which Jesus arose. Aided in his thinking by the works of biblical scholars Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan, Gilk began to realize that the kingdom of God was both a harkening back to the peace and freedom of precivilized agrarian village and a revolutionary anticipation of a postcivilized village-mindedness organized organically on the basis of radical servanthood and radical stewardship. We are, Gilk says, entering the dawn of this Green culture simultaneously with the deepening of civilized world disaster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether the issue of the day on Twitter, Facebook, or cable news is our sexuality, political divides, or the perceived conflict between faith and science, today’s media pushes each one of us into a frustrating clash between two opposing sides. Polarizing, us-against-them discussions divide us and distract us from thinking clearly and communicating lovingly with others. Scott Sauls, like many of us, is weary of the bickering and is seeking a way of truth and beauty through the conflicts. Jesus Outside the Lines presents Jesus as this way. Scott shows us how the words and actions of Jesus reveal a response that does not perpetuate the destructive fray. Jesus offers us a way forward—away from harshness, caricatures, and stereotypes. In Jesus Outside the Lines, you will experience a fresh perspective of Jesus, who will not (and should not) fit into the sides.

For a varied cast of characters--the artist in the title story who tells the tale of his sojourn at LSU during Kennedy's "brief and shining moment" through a retrospective of his paintings; the schoolteacher soon to be married grieving with her mother over the shattered dream of a charmed and happy First Family's life; the disabled man witnessing the killing of Oswald on the TV screen with a growing premonition of the coming darkness in the world; the lawyer, son of a Southern-born mother and a Yankee father, reliving the loss of his beloved wife in mourning the nation's loss; the African-American wife of a preacher praying to the ghost of her dead mother for solace; the woman who, in moving her family away, feels the place reach out and pull them back; the young couple transplanted from the Midwest entranced by the fairy-tale beauty and amusements of their new life who become caught up in the social upheaval of the times--the violent death of our youngest President is a crucible for the dawning of historical consciousness in the wake of the nation's loss of innocence. An Afterword traces the genesis and the thirty-three-year journey to the publication of this book of stories.

Praise for The Jesus I Never Knew: "This is the best book about Jesus I have ever read, probably the best book about Jesus in the whole century. Yancey gently took away my blinders and blazed the trail through my own doubting fears, pious know-it-all, and critical balderdash until I saw the Savior anew and thought I heard him ask me, 'Now whom do you say that I am?' and I understood the question as I never had before." --Lewis B. Smedes, Senior Professor, Fuller Seminary "Philip Yancey takes the reader with him on his very personal journey to Jesus. In The Jesus I Never Knew, I became convinced that the Jesus I met--in some ways for the first time--has known me all along. This book is destined to become a favorite--to recommend to those still seeking Jesus and to pass along to those who've met him, but long to know him more." --Elisa Morgan, President Emerita, MOPS International

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Philip, you--and all the rest of you, too--have been with me for almost three years and yet you still don’t know me.” We were shocked to hear these words. All twelve of us had been his closest associates these past three years. We had traveled throughout our home country with him. We had carefully observed him interact with all types of people in all manner of circumstances. We were puzzled, dismayed, even angry at what we thought was his unjust and untrue characterization of us, his dearest friends. Had our service to him and his cause been in vain? Within these pages, Garrett Whitworth introduces The Man Nobody Knew, the man every person somehow innately desires to know. It’s an irresistible, compelling, surprising road trip from Nazareth to Jerusalem, from a wooden manger to a wooden tree. Feel the Palestinian dust in your sandals, savor fish, freshly-roasted over an open fire by the Sea of Galilee, see him walk on water and raise the dead, hear him say, “Follow me.” -Ted Hamilton, MD
