Book excerpt: Puns are one of the great pleasures of the English language. And for all those unfortunates who would disparage this form of humor, I quote the multi-talented musician and humorist, Oscar Levant who said, "A pun is the lowest form of humor - when you didn't think of it first." Or there's poet and journalist, Christopher Morley's definition, "A pun is language on vacation." It its truest form, a pun is simply a play on words and this book is a wonderful compendium of the various forms of word play, from riddles and jokes we learned as children, to puns we enjoy as adults to Malaprops, Tom Swifties, Spoonerisms, and brilliant punning from prime ministers to presidents, from humorists to literary giants like Shakespeare, Dorothy Parker and Oscar Wilde. Now that you know you will always be in good company, Go ye forth and pun proudly!!

Book The Jest Book the Choicest Anecdotes and Sayings

Download or read book The Jest Book the Choicest Anecdotes and Sayings written by Mark Lemon and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Compiler of this new Jest Book is desirous to make known that it is composed mainly of old jokes, -some older than Joe Miller himself, -with a liberal sprinkling of new jests gathered from books and hearsay. In the course of his researches he has been surprised to find how many Jests, Impromptus, and Repartees have passed current, century after century, until their original utterer is lost in the "mist of ages"; a Good Joke being transferred from one reputed Wit to another, thus resembling certain rare Wines which are continually being rebottled but are never consumed. Dr. Darwin and Sir Charles Lyell, when they have satisfied themselves as to the Origin of Species and the Antiquity of Man, could not better employ their speculative minds than in determining the origin and antiquity of the venerable "joes" which have been in circulation beyond the remembrance of that mythical personage, "the Oldest Inhabitant."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pun is Older than Punctuation The start and use of punctuation occurred around 1500 AD. Prior to this no commas, periods, quotation marks, etc., were used in writing. What one doesn't have, one learns to do without. Books then were rare, no printing presses. Somewhere in those early years someone decided interpretative marks were needed to enhance writing. Yet puns were employed much earlier. In the New Testament, Matthew 16:18, Jesus is quoted as having said, "You are Peter, on this rock, I will build my Church". The word Peter in that ancient language translates as "rock. In effect a pun. Another early pun the headless horseman wore an unusual necklace. A young St. Augustine prayed, "Lord, make me pure, but not yet". Someone punned him as being a "roaming Catholic". Puns are inferential; they twist together meanings and entwine connections to enhance incongruity. No ifs, ands, or butts. Just a few months ago the White House and Congress faced the Fiscal Cliff. After weeks of back and forth wrangling only a few hours remained before going over the cliff to higher taxes. Expressing her disfavor toward a do nothing Congress, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said, punningly, "Congress, it's all about time, it's about time!"

Book The Oxford Handbook of English Prose 1500 1640

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of English Prose 1500 1640 written by Andrew Hadfield and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of English Prose 1500-1640 is the only current overview of early modern English prose writing. The aim of the volume is to make prose more visible as a subject and as a mode of writing. It covers a vast range of material vital for the understanding of the period: from jestbooks, newsbooks, and popular romance to the translation of the classics and the pioneering collections of scientific writing and travel writing; from diaries, tracts on witchcraft, and domestic conduct books to rhetorical treatises designed for a courtly audience; from little known works such as William Baldwin's Beware the Cat, probably the first novel in English, to The Bible, The Book of Common Prayer and Richard Hooker's eloquent statement of Anglican belief, The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity. The work not only deals with the range and variety of the substance and types of English prose, but also analyses the forms and styles of writing adopted in the early modern period, ranging from the Euphuistic nature of prose fiction inaugurated by John Lyly's mannered novel, to the aggressive polemic of the Marprelate controversy; from the scatological humour of comic writing to the careful modulations of the most significant sermons of the age; and from the pithy and concise English essays of Francis Bacon to the ornate and meandering style of John Florio's translation of Montaigne's famous collection. Each essay provides an overview as well as comment on key passages, and a select guide to further reading.
