Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jessie Alexander's Platform Sketches: Original and Adapted When my father left us, he bequeathed to all his children a love of dramatic and romantic literature and a keen sense of humour. Reciting was not thought much of in a household where every one was doing it; it was a very commonplace accomplishment; that is why my family have always been my severest critics and most valuable advisers. They were scathingly critical of my first semi-public utterance which occur red when an elder sister's Sunday-school teacher asked if Jessie could say a little verse or hymn and she promptly responded with. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging in the 1850s, elocutionists recited poetry or drama with music to create a new type of performance. The genre--dominated by women--achieved remarkable popularity. Yet the elocutionists and their art fell into total obscurity during the twentieth century. Marian Wilson Kimber restores elocution with music to its rightful place in performance history. Gazing through the lenses of gender and genre, Wilson Kimber argues that these female artists transgressed the previous boundaries between private and public domains. Their performances advocated for female agency while also contributing to a new social construction of gender. Elocutionists, proud purveyors of wholesome entertainment, pointedly contrasted their "acceptable" feminine attributes against those of morally suspect actresses. As Wilson Kimber shows, their influence far outlived their heyday. Women, the primary composers of melodramatic compositions, did nothing less than create a tradition that helped shape the history of American music.

  • Author : Davinia Caddy
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2020-08-27

Download or read book Musicology and Dance written by Davinia Caddy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long treated as peripheral to music history, dance has become prominent within musicological research, as a prime and popular subject for an increasing number of books, articles, conference papers and special symposiums. Despite this growing interest, there remains no thorough-going critical examination of the ways in which musicologists might engage with dance, thinking not only about specific repertoires or genres, but about fundamental commonalities between the two, including embodiment, agency, subjectivity and consciousness. This volume begins to fill this gap. Ten chapters illustrate a range of conceptual, historical and interpretive approaches that advance the interdisciplinary study of music and dance. This methodological eclecticism is a defining feature of the volume, integrating insights from critical theory, film and cultural studies, the visual arts, phenomenology, cultural anthropology and literary criticism into the study of music and dance.
