Luckily, this aligns with her editor-in-chief's plans, though she soon finds out that not all families are as open and honest with each other as her own, and dark secrets from the past can end up shredding the bonds between ancestors and descendants, fathers and sons, and partners and future in-laws. But when old friends and new acquaintances bring danger to her door, can her supernatural gifts keep her and her family safe?

Book House of Hilton

Download or read book House of Hilton written by Jerry Oppenheimer and published by Crown Archetype. This book was released on 2006-11-07 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This intimate, shocking—and thoroughly unauthorized—portrait of the Hiltons chronicles the family’s amazing odyssey from poverty and obscurity to glory and glamour. From Conrad Hilton, the eccentric “innkeeper to the world” who built a global empire beginning with a fleabag in a dusty Texas backwater, to Paris Hilton, his great-granddaughter, whose fame took off with a sex video, House of Hilton is the unauthorized, eye-popping portrait of one of America’s most outrageous dynasties. If you want to know how Paris Hilton became who she is, you have to know where she came from. From scores of candid and exclusive interviews, from private documents and public records, New York Times bestselling author Jerry Oppenheimer has dug deeply into her paternal and maternal family roots to reveal the often shocking, tragic, and comic lives that helped shape the world’s most famous and fabulous “celebutante.” The cast of characters includes Paris’s maternal grandmother, a materialistic “stage mother from hell.” There is Paris’s maternal grandfather, who became an alcoholic housepainter. The life of Paris’s mother, Kathy Hilton, groomed by her mother to be a star and marry rich, is candidly revealed, too, as is that of Paris’s father, Rick, Conrad’s grandson. Paris’s tabloid antics are truly in the Hilton tradition. Set against a glittery Hollywood backdrop—with appearances by stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Natalie Wood, and Joan Collins—House of Hilton brings to light a cornucopia of closely held Hilton family secrets and sexual peccadilloes, such as the many affairs and the nightclub-brawling, boozing, and pill-popping life of Paris’s great-uncle, Nick Hilton. The story of his hellish marriage to Liz Taylor alone rivals any of today’s Hollywood breakups. Behind it all was Conrad Hilton, who built his worldwide empire through the Great Depression while others were jumping out of windows. A devout Catholic publicly, his personal life was that of an unrepentant sinner. His first marriage was to Mary Barron Hilton, a sexy, hard-drinking, gambling Kentucky teenager half Conrad’s age. Wife number two was the gorgeous Zsa Zsa, who, like Paris, was famous for being famous. Their tumultuous marriage and headline-making divorce are revealed here in all their juicy glory. In all, House of Hilton is a gripping American saga, from the fire and passions that built a business empire to the debauchery and amorality passed on from one generation to the next.

Download or read book Shifting Sands written by Emma Palova and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shifting Sands is a collection of short stories where heroes and heroines shift their destinies like sand shifts in time, grain by grain, often to the surprise of the reader. They try to break away from the conformity of their lives and relationships as they struggle to find themselves. Sometimes, they pass narrowly through the intricate web of vices. They come out transformed, vindicated, victorious or condemned. The 13 stories in the Shifting Sands Short Stories are divided into three circles thematically and chronologically. The first circle draws on the early immigration experience from the old country Czechoslovakia to the New World America. The characters embody the impermanence of their status as they struggle between the old culture, language and the adaptation and assimilation to the new world in North America. This is expressed in Danillo, Honey Azrael and the Temptation of Martin Duggan. The second circle of short stories is about assimilation into the new culture while working at the Midwest retail chain. This is demonstrated in Tonight on Main, Therese's Mind, Boxcutter Amy, Orange Nights and the Death Song. The third circle of stories draws on newspaper and media experience fueled by the growing passion for writing. These stories include Foxy, Iron Horse, In the Shadows, Riddleyville Clowns and Chatamal.Based on the story Riddleyville Clowns, I wrote the screenplay titled Riddleyville Clowns. Both demonstrate the hardiness of hometown characters from Main Street America and beyond.Excerpts from the short stories can be found on EW Emma's Writings and on Edition Emma Publishing blogs.

Download or read book Movement Disorder Emergencies written by Steven J. Frucht and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Movement Disorder Emergencies: Diagnosis and Treatment provides a fresh and unique approach to what is already a high-profile subspecialty area in clinical neurology. The disorders covered in this volume are standard fare in the field but emphasize the urgencies and emergencies that can occur. One of the very attractive features of the field of movement disorders is that diagnosis is often based on unique visible and sometimes audible phenomenological symptoms and signs. Therefore, in this era of highly sophisticated laboratory and radiological diagnostic tools, the diagnosis of many movement disorders is still largely made in the clinic where pattern recognition is key. Crucial to astute clinical diagnosis is broad clinical experience. In short, you have to have seen one to recognize one! Patients with movement disorders nearly always present as outpatients but, as aptly recognized by Drs. Frucht and Fahn, this may include acute manifestations leading to emergency presentations, often in an emergency room setting, where they are very likely to be unrecognized and therefore poorly managed. The authors define an “emergency” movement disorder as one in which failure to promptly diagnose and treat may result in significant morbidity or mortality. However, they also stress the importance of certain “can’t miss” diagnoses such as Wilson’s disease, dopa-responsive dystonia, and Whipple’s disease in which delayed diagnosis in less emergent situations can lead to slowly evolving and often irreversible neurological damage with tragic consequences.

Book How Sweet it was

Download or read book How Sweet it was written by Arthur Shulman and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One can obtain as many opinions about television as there are people with eyes. No two people see it in exactly the same way. You may not be aware of it, but up there, in that compartment of your brain where memories are stored, all sorts of strange images are stockpiled. The purpose of this book is to coax those memories out of their hiding places and bring them front and center, where you can savor them anew. Although this book is intended to be a comprehensive review of television during the past twenty years-the two decades that have passed since the medium became a commercial reality- it is not to be just a scholarly history. The programs and people represented here were chosen not because they were "good" or "popular" or "successful," but because each contributed, in some large or small way, to the progress of television.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The next shot from Cupid's bow may be fatal in USA Today bestselling, Agatha Award-winning author Ellen Byron's hearty and delightful seventh Cajun Country mystery. In Pelican, Louisiana, Valentine's Day has a way of warming the heart, despite the February chill. But the air at Crozat Plantation B&B turns decidedly frigid when celebrity chef Phillippe Chanson checks in. And when the arrogant Phillippe--in town to open his newest Cajun-themed restaurant--perishes in a fiery boat crash, Maggie Crozat's dear friend JJ lands in very cold water. Did JJ, proprietor of Junie's Oyster Bar and Dance Hall, murder Phillippe because he feared the competition? Might Maggie's mother, Ninette, have bumped off the chef for stealing one of her cherished recipes? Or was the culprit a local seafood vendor, miffed because Phillippe was somehow able to sell oysters for a remarkably reasonable price, despite an oyster shortage? Maggie had planned to devote her February to art lessons in New Orleans, a present from her sweetheart, Bo. But now she has to focus on helping her friend and her mother cross a murder charge off the menu. Meanwhile, Maggie receives a series of anonymous gifts that begin as charming but grow increasingly disturbing. Does Maggie have an admirer--or a stalker? And are these mysterious gifts somehow related to Phillippe's murder? Blood may be thicker than water, but this case is thicker than gumbo. And solving it will determine whether Maggie gets hearts and roses--or hearse and lilies--this Valentine's Day.
