Book Jerusalem in Bible Times Classic Reprint

Download or read book Jerusalem in Bible Times Classic Reprint written by Lewis Bayles Paton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jerusalem in Bible Times During the season of 1903 - 4 it was my privilege to reside in Jerusalem as director of the American School of Oriental Study and Research, and to carry on special investigations into the ancient history of the city. While thus engaged I was constantly reminded of the lack of a handbook giving in convenient form the results of the latest archaeological researches. Baedecker's admirable guide book is necessarily brief, and discusses archaeological matters topo graphically, rather than in the historical order that is necessary, if one is to understand their significance. The learned works on Jeru salem of Professor Adam Smith, and of Dr. Selah Merrill, which have appeared since this book was written, are to elaborate and ex pensive to be used by the ordinary student or tourist. Intelligent travelers in visiting the Holy City are at the mercy of ignorant drago mans, who can only repeat the worthless traditions of the particular ecclesiastical bodies with which they happen to be connected. There is not a guide in Jersusalem who does not believe that the name of the southwest hill is Zion, yet no scientific archaeologist of today holds that view. At the time of the meeting of the World's sunday-school Convention in Jerusalem hundreds of eager people found it impossible to get either from men or from books an accurate account of the remains of the ancient city. To help this difficulty I was invited to lecture before the convention and to conduct some parties about the city. At the close of the meeting I was asked to put my addresses into permanent form, so that it might be possible for those who had heard them, and for other students of the Bible, to give them more careful consideration. The result of this request has been the preparation and publication of this series of studies into the archae ological history of ancient Jerusalem. During the past year they have appeared in successive numbers of the Biblical World, and they are now issued in book form, with corrections and additions, in the hope of reaching a still wider circle of readers. I trust that they will prove helpful both to students at home and to travelers in the Holy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Court of Pilate: A Story of Jerusalem in the Days of Christ An ominous silence, eloquent in its terrible significance of the tense state of public feeling, reigned over the city of Jerusalem. Outspoken threats and complaints were few, but in the homes, on the streets and in the places of trading men met each other with a glance wherein was expressed the most violent hatred of the existing government, or congregated in groups to discuss with bated breath, not daring to. speak openly, a fresh bit of injury and tyranny inflicted upon the Jewish people, only to scatter and disappear in all directions when the soldiery appeared on the scene. Throughout the city, and from one boundary of Judea to the other, low, unformed murmurings could be heard, - portentous and grimly expressive of the common hate of the people against the invaders and the wielders of law. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jerusalem: The Holy City, Its History and Hope Forms the sole standing-ground for this demand. Very few people know the Hebrew language, or are able to test these assertions, except by such light of ordinary criticism as they may happen to possess, by the laws of literature and the force of nature; but I think that few, comparatively, will be tempted to transfer a faith, in which they have been trained from their childhood, to a small group of unknown persons, whose motives are dubious, and their methods more ingenious than ingenu ous; and to reject on their authority, as a series of often fraudulent fables, the history so full of nature, so instinct with every feeling of humanity, which has been the food. Book Horeb and Jerusalem Classic Reprint

Download or read book Horeb and Jerusalem Classic Reprint written by George Sandie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horeb and Jerusalem It is well known that some of the localities in the East, of deepest interest to the reader of Scripture, are involved in uncertainty and dispute. Great names can be quoted in support of various opinions regarding them, and not a few have resigned themselves to the conclusion that, at this distance of time, they are beyond the possibility of satisfactory identification. It is admitted at any rate, on all sides, that the most important section of Scripture Topography is open for further inquiry and settlement, and I hope, therefore, to be the more readily excused in presenting some aspects of the subject that have appeared to me worthy of attention, and that may contribute, in some degree, to a clearer elucidation of the sacred narrative. The localities here discussed refer to the scenes of the Exodus and the Redemption. In the first section of the book, I have attempted to trace the route of the Israelites from Goshen to Sinai, and to examine some of those questions which have had so prominent a place in recent controversies on the Pentateuch. Book Jerusalem in Bible and Archaeology

Download or read book Jerusalem in Bible and Archaeology written by Andrew G. Vaughn and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2003 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are archaeologists and biblical scholars saying about Jerusalem? This volume includes the most up-to-date cross-disciplinary assessment of Biblical Jerusalem (ca. 2000-586 B.C.E.) that represents the views of biblical historians, archaeologists, Assyriologists, and Egyptologists. The archaeological articles both summarize and critique previous theories as well as present previously unpublished archaeological data regarding the highly contested interpretations of First Temple Period Jerusalem. The interpretative essays ask the question, "Can there be any dialogue between archaeologists and biblical scholars in the absence of consensus?" The essays give a clear "yes" to this question, and provide suggestions for how archaeology and biblical studies can and should be in conversation. This book will appeal to advanced scholars, nonspecialists in biblical studies, and lay audiences who are interested in the most recent theories on Jerusalem. The volume will be especially useful as a supplemental textbook for graduate and undergraduate courses on biblical history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaders of Israel: A Brief History of the Hebrews; From the Earliest Times to the Downfall of Jerusalem, A. D. 70 Thomas Carlyle's remark that "the history of the world is composed of the biographies of its great men" is particularly true of Israel. Accordingly, we have endeavored to correlate about some twenty-four outstanding "Leaders" the principal events of Old Testament history from the earliest times to the overthrow of Jerusalem by Titus in the year 70 A. D. The constant aim has been to assist the student who wishes to blaze his way, so to speak, through the Old Testament and trace the events chronologically. This brief epitome, therefore, having been written with a definite purpose, and according to a prescribed plan, is not intended to be exhaustive, but suggestive. The Bible account should, section by section, be read first; for, while the story is so written as to be read continuously it is directly contrary to our intention to take the Bible out of the reader's hand. In our attitude, we have endeavored to be constructive. Mere theories have found no place, but facts have been welcomed from every source, critical and archaeological. The scriptural quotations are taken from the American Revised Version, Standard Edition, which we commend most cordially to the student as the very best English version of the Bible yet made. Numerous maps and charts have been inserted as a possible help to the reader. A simple, one-page diagram sometimes conveys more information than could be expressed by words in an entire chapter. Book Jerusalem Past and Present

Download or read book Jerusalem Past and Present written by Gaius Glenn Atkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jerusalem Past and Present: The City of Undying Memories There would be a fine historical fitness in making palestjne again a Jewish State, guaranteed as to its integrity by a concert Of the Christian Powers. Failing that, the country should be administered by a Power great enough to protect it, devout enough to honour its Shrines, and tolerant enough to keep its gates Open to all who would come in peace or reverence, for the lordship of that city is a holy trust and should be so administered. We may trace back to Jeru salem many of the ideals for which the allied nations are fighting today. We seek a world whose Officers shall be peace and its exactors righteousness. We would make the spirit of Jesus the dominant spirit in the contact of nations. Surely we may see with the taking of Jerusalem by the Allies, the prophecy of the triumph of the ideals we up hold. It is right that those who are most loyal to what is most true to the Spirit of Jerusalem Should possess the city. Book The Resurrection and the Origin of the Church in Jerusalem Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Resurrection and the Origin of the Church in Jerusalem Classic Reprint written by William Park Armstrong and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resurrection and the Origin of the Church in Jerusalem That any attempt to write the history of the apostolic age without taking account of the life and work of Jesus must prove inadequate will not be denied. For whether we learn of this from Paul or from other sources, it is the fact of the life and work, death and resurrection of Jesus which is the prius of the subsequent history. The resurrection, it is true, is often eliminated from the statement of the factual basis upon which the early Church rested and of which account must be taken by historians of the apostolic age, and in its place is put the belief of the disciples in the resurrec tion. But whatever view be taken of the resurrection of Jesus as narrated in the New Testament, it will be admitted that the history of the apostolic age can not be understood apart from the person of Jesus: what He was, what He did, what He taught, what impression He made on his disciples and what they believed concerning Him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buried Cities and Bible Countries This book contains a description Of some of the most important modern discoveries bearing upon the Bible, the selection being made to meet the wants Of those who have no time to follow the course Of exploration, and no taste for technical details. The preparation of such a volume has often been urged upon me by those who have listened to my lectures on Palestine Exploration. In such a work accuracy is of more value than origin ality and therefore I have not hesitated to gather information from the best sources, and to use it freely. The authorities and sources will be found in a list at the end of each chapter; and thus, while due acknowledgment is made, the reader will know where to go to for further information. In one chapter, indeed - that relating to the topography of Jerusalem in Scripture times - I do venture to state my own views, and give my own map of localities; but it is only because my special study of the subject seems to justify my confidence, and compels me to differ from other writers. I desire to express my special Obligation to the Committee Of the Palestine Exploration Fund for allowing the use of their plates for the illustrations of this volume.
