Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jerusalem, 1918-1920: Being the Records of the Pro-Jerusalem Council During the Period of the British Military Administration Later in the year 1918, hearing of the presence in Egypt of the architect Mr. C. R. Ashbee, a friend and disciple of William Morris, a member of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, and of the National Trust, and well known for his skill and enthusiasm for civic development with its kindred Arts and Crafts, I wrote to him requesting him to visit Jerusalem and write a report on its possibilities in this respect. That report is the germ of many of the undertakings which have since been carried out. Mr. Ashbee was appointed Civic Advisor and Secretary to the pro-jerusalem Council. Some le. 5000 were collected by direct appeal to those likely to be interested in Jerusalem, and the various projects and activities, a list of which is set forth by Mr. Ashbee, or may be referred to in Appendix III, were set in motion. A great impulse was given to the scope and status of the Society by the arrival of Sir Herbert Samuel as High Commissioner. His Excellency had, during his visit in the spring of 1920, attended a meeting of the Council, of which he had been unanimously elected a member, and signified his approval of our aims by a most encouraging speech as well as a generous subscription. Amongst many other causes_of gratitude the Society owes to him its Charter and an arrangement whereby the Government affords it a very considerable annual subvention. It only remains for me to convey my personal thanks once again to all those benefactors and supporters whose names appear in the list given on pages 72-74. Of this publication, to call attention to the generosity of the gifts, and to invite all whom these pages may reach to forge in their lives a link with Jerusalem the living. A reference, indeed, to the list of subscribers, and that is to say members of the Society, will show how wide the net is spread. Rever ence for Jerusalem and what it stands for in the life of man has been the motive that has inspired these gifts, and I make bold to hope that this record of two years' work in the safeguarding of the Holy City may gather in many hundreds of subscribers among the three great religions for which it stands as a beacon on a hill. The Planning and Building of the Hebrew University, 1919–1948: Facing the Temple Mount traces, for the first time, the history of the construction of this highly significant Zionist enterprise. It follows the years of the British Mandate rule over Palestine, bookended between the Ottoman Empire government and Israel's independence—an era of great changes in the area, Jerusalem in particular. In the three decades between 1919 and 1948, five different master plans were drawn up for the university, though none of them were fully implemented. Only seven buildings were designed and fully completed. Each plan and building presented an interpretation of a university conception that also related to prevailing styles and ideological trends. Underlying each one were intricate power struggles, donors' wishes, and architectural concerns. Internationally famous town-planners and architects such as Patrick Geddes and Erich Mendelsohn took part in designing the campus. The book also reveals comparatively unknown architects and their contribution to the campus.

Book excerpt: On a cold winter morning in January of 1851, a small group of people approached the monumental façade of an ancient rock-cut burial cave located north of the Old City of Jerusalem. The team, consisting of two Europeans and a number of local workers, was led by Louis-Félicien Caignart de Saulcy—descendant of a noble Flemish family who later was to become a distinguished member of the French parliament. As an amateur archaeologist and a devout Catholic, de Saulcy was attracted to the Holy Land and Jerusalem in particular and was obsessed by his desire to uncover some tangible evidence for the city’s glorious past. However, unlike numerous other European pilgrims, researchers and adventurers before him, de Saulcy was determined to expose the evidence by physically excavating ancient sites. His first object of investigation constitutes one of the most attractive and mysterious monumental burial caves within the vicinity of the Old City, from then onward to be referred to as the “Tomb of the Kings” (Kubur al-Muluk). By conducting an archaeological investigation, de Saulcy tried to prove that this complex represented no less than the monumental sepulcher of the biblical Davidic Dynasty. His brief exploration of the burial complex in 1851 led to the discovery of several ancient artifacts, including sizeable marble fragments of one or several sarcophagi. It would take him another 13 years to raise the funds for a more comprehensive investigation of the site. On November 17, 1863, de Saulcy returned to Jerusalem with a larger team to initiate what would later be referred to as the first archaeological excavation to be conducted in the city.—(from the “Preface”) In 2006, some two dozen contemporary archaeologists and historians met at Brown University, in Providence RI, to present papers and illustrations marking the 150th anniversary of modern archaeological exploration of the Holy City. The papers from that conference are published here, presented in 5 major sections: (1) The History of Research, (2) From Early Humans to the Iron Age, (3) The Roman Period, (4) The Byzantine Period, and (5) The Early Islamic and Medieval Periods. The volume is heavily illustrated with materials from historical archives as well as from contemporary excavations. It provides a helpful and informative introduction to the history of the various national and religious organizations that have sponsored excavations in the Holy Land and Jerusalem in particular, as well as a summary of the current status of excavations in Jerusalem.
