Book Commentary on the Works of Jeremias Gotthelf

Download or read book Commentary on the Works of Jeremias Gotthelf written by Gottfried Keller and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new 2023 translation of Gottfried Keller's 1849 "Jeremias Gotthelf", followed by an Afterword by the translator, a timeline of his life and works and an index of his works. In this work, Keller reviews the short stories by his fellow author Jeremias Gotthelf that appeared at length between 1849 and 1855 in Brockhaus' sheets for literary entertainment . After Keller's death, Baechtold brought the four treatises together, including their postscript commenting on Gotthelf's death, in the order in which they appeared and gave the whole thing the title “Jeremias Gotthelf”. This work is important because it is a main source for Keller's views on poetry and the political and social responsibility of the poet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Die Schwarze Spinne is a religious allegory about morals and religious living in the mid-nineteenth century, written by Jeremias Gotthelf. This work is an interlinear translation of Gotthelf's Die Schwarze Spinne with introductions to both the author and the work itself. In a small Swiss community, a baptism is the backdrop for a village elder to tell the story of his family and their life and death struggle with the devil himself. The elder relates the story of a knight and his ill treatment of the farmers of the area. The knight's inhuman demands upon the peasants bring about unforeseen consequences, which lead to the decimation of the village and, ultimately, the knight's own death. The plague released through a pact with the devil, the black spider, haunts the village for hundreds of years and must be fought with religious piety, courage, and devotion to traditional values. It is when one forgets God and his commandments that the black spider is at its most deadly. A true tale of morality written by a pastor in 1842, The Black Spider serves as a warning to those who, according to Gotthelf, go against the will of God.

Book Narrative Strategies in the Novels of Jeremias Gotthelf

Download or read book Narrative Strategies in the Novels of Jeremias Gotthelf written by Robert Godwin-Jones and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1986 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines all Gotthelf's published novels and attempts to reconcile two aspects of his fiction which critics have generally seen as being in conflict with one another: his pedagogical intent and his artistic instinct. It does this through an analysis of the reader's role in the novels. The study seeks to reveal if and how Gotthelf's expressed intentions are reflected in the novels' narrative strategies. This involves an examination of the ways in which the reader's interest is established and maintained in the different novels and how the devices used to achieve these effects relate to the author's moral, social and political vision. Furthermore, a novel-by-novel analysis shows how the reader's role was affected by Gotthelf's changing views on the social function of his fiction.

Book Literature the Volk and the Revolution in Mid nineteenth Century Germany

Download or read book Literature the Volk and the Revolution in Mid nineteenth Century Germany written by Michael Perraudin and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the revolutions of 1830 and 1848, poverty reached new extremes in Germany, as in other European countries, and gave rise to a class of disaffected poor, leading to the widespread expectation of a social revolution. Whether welcomed or feared, it dominated private and public debate to a larger extent than is generally assumed as is shown in this study on the reflections in literature of what was called the "Social Question." Examining works by Heine, Eichendorff, Nestroy, Büchner, Grillparzer, and Theodor Storm, the author reveals an acute awareness of political issues in an era in literature which is often seen as tending to quiescence and withdrawal from public preoccupations.
