Book excerpt: The straight world has a hard time accepting Jeffrey Epstein. He is a self-made billionaire. A high school dropout from a hard-working family. He has a gift for gab and a gift for math. He went to work with investment bankers selling deals and he is good at it. Soon he had his own company handling investments for billionaires only. Millions of dollars is just chump change to these people. Jeffrey dealt with billions. Taking large amounts of money and making it into even larger amounts. In the process he was able to scrape off a lot of money for himself. And he invested wisely and accumulated over a billion dollars for himself. He worked in that financial gray area of what is legal or illegal. Ethical or unscrupulous. Regular people don't even have that consideration or even know about the gray areas. It is for the very wealthy. That is where Epstein flourished. He was the ultimate hustler with money, with wealthy individuals, and teenaged girls. And he shared them with his cronies. It was his way of showing off. And making connections for his money deals. The average person can never understand all this. They condemn Jeffrey without trying to understand what was happening. And, of course a large percentage of average Americans are anti-semitic, and they hold that against Jeffrey also.To Jeffrey's detriment, he flaunted the law against sex with underage girls. It doesn't matter that they were already having sex and some of them were actual street prostitutes. That doesn't matter to many people. The point is they were under 18 years old and were expected to still be virgins. At least until they were married. That is a good system if it works. But does it relate to the real world when girls start having sex much younger and even in some cases, prostitute themselves for the lure of the cash payment. An attorney for Epstein, Marc Fernich, called for a "full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Epstein's death."Fernich said he was speaking personally, not as a representative of Epstein's defense team. He said several parties can be blamed for the death, including "overzealous prosecutors," "pandering politicians," compliant judges" and a "hysterical press corps.""The public needs to know exactly what happened and why -- and how his custodians could have let it occur," Fernich saidAttorney General William Barr put out a statement saying: "I was appalled to learn that Jeffrey Epstein was found dead early this morning from an apparent suicide while in federal custody. Mr. Epstein's death raises serious questions that must be answered. In addition to the FBI's investigation, I have consulted with the Inspector General who is opening an investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Epstein's death."

The death of millionaire businessman Charles Parsons seems like a straightforward suicide. There's no sign of forced entry or struggle in his lavish New Jersey mansion - just a single gunshot wound from his own weapon. But days later, a different story emerges. Computer techs pick up a voice recording that incriminates Parsons' adoptive daughter, Ann, who duly confesses and pleads guilty. After the case is brought to her attention by an unlikely source, Erin McCabe and her law partner, Duane Swisher, soon realise that pieces of Ann's story don't fit together. Ann clearly knows more than she\'s willing to share, even if it means a life sentence. Who is she protecting, and why? As their investigation deepens, Erin and Swish find themselves caught in a web of human exploitation, unchecked greed, and murder - before learning the horrifying truth... Book Dreams from the Monster Factory

Download or read book Dreams from the Monster Factory written by Sunny Schwartz and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreams from the Monster Factory tells the true story of Sunny Schwartz's extraordinary work in the criminal justice system and how her profound belief in people's ability to change is transforming the San Francisco jails and the criminals incarcerated there. With an immediacy made possible by a twenty-seven-year career, Schwartz immerses the reader in the troubling and complex realities of U.S. jails, the monster factories -- places that foster violence, rage and, ultimately, better criminals. But by working in the monster factories, Schwartz also discovered her dream of a criminal justice system that empowers victims and reforms criminals. Charismatic and deeply compassionate, Sunny Schwartz grew up on Chicago's south side in the 1960s. She fought with her family, struggled through school and floundered as she tried to make something of herself. Bucking expectations of failure, she applied to a law school that didn't require a college degree, passed the bar and began her life's work in the criminal justice system. Eventually she grew disheartened by the broken, inflexible system, but instead of quitting, she reinvented it, making jail a place that could change people for the better. In 1997, Sunny launched the Resolve to Stop the Violence Project (RSVP), a groundbreaking program for the San Francisco Sheriff 's Department. RSVP, which has cut recidivism for violent rearrests by up to 80 percent, brings together victims and offenders in a unique correctional program that empowers victims and requires offenders to take true responsibility for their actions and eliminate their violent behavior. Sunny Schwartz's faith in humanity, her compassion and her vision are inspiring. In Dreams from the Monster Factory she goes beyond statistics and sensational portrayals of prison life to offer an intimate, harrowing and revelatory chronicle of crime, punishment and, ultimately, redemption.

Book Rules for Radicals

Download or read book Rules for Radicals written by Saul Alinsky and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This country's leading hell-raiser" (The Nation) shares his impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” First published in 1971 and written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.

Book Leave a Cheater Gain a Life

Download or read book Leave a Cheater Gain a Life written by Tracy Schorn and published by Running Press Adult. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leave a Cheater, Gain a Life is a no-nonsense self-help guide for anyone who has ever been cheated on. Here's advice not based on saving your relationship after infidelity—but saving your sanity. When it comes to cheating, a lot of the attention is focused on cheaters—their unmet needs or their challenges with monogamy. But Tracy Schorn (aka Chump Lady) lampoons such blameshifting and puts the focus squarely on the-cheated-upon (chumps) and their needs. Combining solid advice that champions self-respect, along with hilarious cartoons satirizing the pomposity of cheaters, Leave a Cheater, Gain a Life offers a fresh voice for chumps who want (and need) a new message about infidelity. This book will offer advice on Stupid sh*t cheaters say and how to respond, Rookie mistakes of the recently chumped and how to disarm your fears, Why chumps take the blame and how to protect yourself, and more. Full of snark, sass, and real wisdom about how to bounce back after the gut blow of betrayal, Schorn is the friend who guides you through this nightmare and gives you hope for a better life ahead.

Book Capitalism and Desire

    Book Details:
  • Author : Todd McGowan
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2016-09-20
  • ISBN : 0231542216
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Capitalism and Desire written by Todd McGowan and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite creating vast inequalities and propping up reactionary world regimes, capitalism has many passionate defenders—but not because of what it withholds from some and gives to others. Capitalism dominates, Todd McGowan argues, because it mimics the structure of our desire while hiding the trauma that the system inflicts upon it. People from all backgrounds enjoy what capitalism provides, but at the same time are told more and better is yet to come. Capitalism traps us through an incomplete satisfaction that compels us after the new, the better, and the more. Capitalism's parasitic relationship to our desires gives it the illusion of corresponding to our natural impulses, which is how capitalism's defenders characterize it. By understanding this psychic strategy, McGowan hopes to divest us of our addiction to capitalist enrichment and help us rediscover enjoyment as we actually experienced it. By locating it in the present, McGowan frees us from our attachment to a better future and the belief that capitalism is an essential outgrowth of human nature. From this perspective, our economic, social, and political worlds open up to real political change. Eloquent and enlivened by examples from film, television, consumer culture, and everyday life, Capitalism and Desire brings a new, psychoanalytically grounded approach to political and social theory.

Book JFK and the Unspeakable

Download or read book JFK and the Unspeakable written by James W. Douglass and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE ACCLAIMED BOOK, NOW IN PAPERBACK, with a reading group guide and a new afterword by the author. At the height of the Cold War, JFK risked committing the greatest crime in human history: starting a nuclear war. Horrified by the specter of nuclear annihilation, Kennedy gradually turned away from his long-held Cold Warrior beliefs and toward a policy of lasting peace. But to the military and intelligence agencies in the United States, who were committed to winning the Cold War at any cost, Kennedy’s change of heart was a direct threat to their power and influence. Once these dark "Unspeakable" forces recognized that Kennedy’s interests were in direct opposition to their own, they tagged him as a dangerous traitor, plotted his assassination, and orchestrated the subsequent cover-up. Douglass takes readers into the Oval Office during the tense days of the Cuban Missile Crisis, along on the strange journey of Lee Harvey Oswald and his shadowy handlers, and to the winding road in Dallas where an ambush awaited the President’s motorcade. As Douglass convincingly documents, at every step along the way these forces of the Unspeakable were present, moving people like pawns on a chessboard to promote a dangerous and deadly agenda.

Book Your Post Has Been Removed

Download or read book Your Post Has Been Removed written by Frederik Stjernfelt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access monograph argues established democratic norms for freedom of expression should be implemented on the internet. Moderating policies of tech companies as Facebook, Twitter and Google have resulted in posts being removed on an industrial scale. While this moderation is often encouraged by governments - on the pretext that terrorism, bullying, pornography, "hate speech" and "fake news" will slowly disappear from the internet - it enables tech companies to censure our society. It is the social media companies who define what is blacklisted in their community standards. And given the dominance of social media in our information society, we run the risk of outsourcing the definition of our principles for discussion in the public domain to private companies. Instead of leaving it to social media companies only to take action, the authors argue democratic institutions should take an active role in moderating criminal content on the internet. To make this possible, tech companies should be analyzed whether they are approaching a monopoly. Antitrust legislation should be applied to bring those monopolies within democratic governmental oversight. Despite being in different stages in their lives, Anne Mette is in the startup phase of her research career, while Frederik is one of the most prolific philosophers in Denmark, the authors found each other in their concern about Free Speech on the internet. The book was originally published in Danish as Dit opslag er blevet fjernet - techgiganter & ytringsfrihed. Praise for 'Your Post has been Removed' "From my perspective both as a politician and as private book collector, this is the most important non-fiction book of the 21st Century. It should be disseminated to all European citizens. The learnings of this book and the use we make of them today are crucial for every man, woman and child on earth. Now and in the future." Jens Rohde, member of the European Parliament for the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe "This timely book compellingly presents an impressive array of information and analysis about the urgent threats the tech giants pose to the robust freedom of speech and access to information that are essential for individual liberty and democratic self-government. It constructively explores potential strategies for restoring individual control over information flows to and about us. Policymakers worldwide should take heed!" Nadine Strossen, Professor, New York Law School. Author, HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship.

Book Planning for Crime Prevention

Download or read book Planning for Crime Prevention written by Ted Kitchen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime and the fear of crime are issues high in public concern and on political agendas in most developed countries. This book takes these issues and relates them to the contribution that urban planners and participative planning processes can make in response to these problems. Its focus is thus on the extent to which crime opportunities can be prevented or reduced through the design, planning and management of the built environment. The perspective of the book is transatlantic and comparative, not only because ideas and inspiration in this and many other fields increasingly move between countries but also because there is a great deal of relevant theoretical material and practice in both the USA and the UK which has not previously been pulled together in this systemic manner.

Book Presidential Puppetry

Download or read book Presidential Puppetry written by Andrew Kreig and published by Eagle View Capital Strategies. This book was released on 2013 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A century ago, President Wilson warned of danger in his best-selling book. What the Democrat did not reveal was Wall Street's vital help to achieve his election victory in 2012 over Main Street Republicans. Ostensibly a progressive, Wilson faithfully implemented during two terms Wall Street's goals in banking, taxes, Cabinet appointments, and war policy. A parallel situation exists today under President Obama, elected as a progressive but governing for the most part with a Wall Street-friendly deregulatory program and a tough-love austerity agenda. Jobs, savings, homes, health, constitutional rights, and public confidence are even more at risk than in Wilson's era. The federal government and its private overlords exert vastly more control over the nation's war-driven economy than a century ago. We are losing our freedoms and future. More dramatically, needless austerity will kill many Americans, especially those too old or unhealthy to fend for themselves. The scandals reported in Puppetry provide a clear path to reform. The facts sweep away the false histories and partisan posturing that dominates current political discourse. Puppetry is winning praise before publication from experts who understand the stakes."--Provided by publisher.
