Download or read book Early Kentucky Tax Records written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1984 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many historic documents that were lost when the British burned the Capitol in Washington during the War of 1812 were the first two censuses of Kentucky, the earliest one compiled while Kentucky was still a part of Virginia. Owing to the destruction of these census records, genealogists doing research in Kentucky have been obliged to reconstruct the lost data from a number of related records, particularly tax records. Those printed here represent all the tax lists ever published in "The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society" and are among the earliest Kentucky tax records in existence. In a few cases these tax records date from a period either immediately before or after the 1790 and 1800 enumerations, and show, by comparison with the reconstructed census records for 1790 and 1800, published by Charles B. Heinemann and G. Glenn Clift respectively, the movement of early Kentuckians from one county to another. In other cases the records serve both as an adjunct and a corrective to the Heinemann and Clift works, though the vast majority of these tax lists--giving the names of about 12,000 taxpayers, their counties of residence, and the number of persons and chattels attached to their households--do not appear in either work.

It chronicles thirty generations and a thousand years of Sanders (and Saunders) family evolution beginning before England's earliest days and ending across the Atlantic in colonial Virginia and eventually frontier and later Kentucky. Family figures are portrayed in their own distinctive historical contexts and an extensive genealogy focused on old world lineage is appended. Nearly a thousand chapter notes on sources and names are furnished to assist readers interested in discovering their own ancestry.

Download or read book Home Rule written by Honor Sachs and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On America’s western frontier, myths of prosperity concealed the brutal conditions endured by women, slaves, orphans, and the poor. As poverty and unrest took root in eighteenth-century Kentucky, western lawmakers championed ideas about whiteness, manhood, and patriarchal authority to help stabilize a politically fractious frontier. Honor Sachs combines rigorous scholarship with an engaging narrative to examine how conditions in Kentucky facilitated the expansion of rights for white men in ways that would become a model for citizenship in the country as a whole. Endorsed by many prominent western historians, this groundbreaking work is a major contribution to frontier scholarship.
