Download or read book Understanding the Spiritual Meaning of Jerusalem in Three Abrahamic Religions written by Antti Laato and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the Spiritual Meaning of Jerusalem in Three Abrahamic Religions analyzes the historical, social and theological factors which have resulted in Jerusalem being considered a holy place in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It also surveys the transmission of the religious traditions related to Jerusalem. This volume centralizes both the biblical background of Jerusalem’s pivotal role as holy place and its later development in religious writings; the biblical imagery has been adapted, rewritten and modified in Second Temple Jewish writings, the New Testament, patristic and Jewish literature, and Islamic traditions. Thus, all three monotheistic religions have influenced the multifaceted, interpretive traditions which help to understand the current religious and political position of Jerusalem in the three main Abrahamic faiths.

Book excerpt: Christian-Muslim Relations, a Bibliographical History 1 (CMR1) is the first part of a general history of relations between the faiths from the seventh century to the present. It covers the period from 600 to 1500, when encounters took place through the extended Mediterranean basin and are recorded in Syriac, Arabic, Greek, Latin and other languages. It comprises introductory essays on the treatment of Christians in the Qur'an, Qur'an commentaries, biographies of the Prophet, Hadith and Sunni law, and of Muslims in canon law, and the main body of more than two hundred detailed entries on all the works recorded, whether surviving or lost. These entries provide biographical details of the authors where known, descriptions and assessments of the works themselves, and complete accounts of manuscripts, editions, translations and studies. The result of collaboration between leading scholars, CMR1 is intended as a basic tool for research in Christian-Muslim relations.
Download or read book Routledge Handbook on Christian Muslim Relations written by David Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-16 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The matter of Christian–Muslim relations cannot be ignored these days. While the term itself may not appear all that often, relations between the two faiths and their reciprocal perceptions are undeniable influences behind many current conflicts, declarations of mutual recognition and peace negotiations, not to mention the brooding hatred of religious extremists. Since 9/11, relations between the two faiths have, in one form or another, hardly been away from the news. This Handbook contains fundamental information about the major aspects of relations between Christians and Muslims. Its various sections follow the history from the early seventh century to the present, the major religious issues that have led to disputes between the two faiths, and the political implications of religious differences at various stages through history, as well as in the present. It includes analysis of scriptural and theological themes and explores the characteristics of relations at important points in history and also in various parts of the world today. Chapters are devoted to the most significant intellectual interpretations and encounters, the main armed clashes, including the Crusades, and the important documents issued by each faith that in recent years have led the way towards new developments in recognition and acceptance. With chapters written by some of the foremost experts in the field, the book traces the largely dark history of relations and explains the underlying reasons why Muslims and Christians have found tolerance and respect for the other difficult. It is an excellent resource for understanding the past and for highlighting lessons for future relations between the world’s two largest religions.
Download or read book Maqama written by Jaakko Hämeen-Anttila and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time the genre of the maqama, the most widespread and popular genre of fictional prose within Arab literature, is presented in its comprehensive history. It was through its stylistic virtuosity as well as its awareness of a situation of social and intellectual crisis that the maqama, portraying the picaresque dramatic performance of a needy literary artist, won global fame. The most celebrated maqamas of Al-Hariri (d.1122) have not only formed part of the Arabic literary canon for many centuries but have inspired even extra-Arabic oriental literatures such as Hebrew and Christian-Syrian and - more lately - modern arabic theatre. Download or read book In Speechless Ecstasy written by Serafim Seppälä and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the hypothesis underlying this study, Syriac and Sufi texts refer repeatedly to and deal with something "mystical" which is absolutely non-linguistic in nature, yet is expressed linguistically under the conditions and restrictions of natural language; this something is an important factor constituting the character of the discourse, but it does not submit to being an object of research. The purpose of this study is to undertake a systematic survey of the different constituents of ecstatic readings in Syriac ascetic literature, including the process of expression and interpretation (and manifestation, as far as possible), and to present this together with a corresponding analysis of classical Sufism as it is manifested in its authoritative literature, and finally, to make concluding remarks concerning common features and differences between traditions.

Download or read book The God Tribe of Shabazz The True History written by Elijah Muhammad and published by Elijah Muhammad Books.com. This book was released on 2012-03-17 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the God Tribe of Shabazz is one of the most elusive subjects of the Supreme Wisdom as taught by Messenger Elijah Muhammad, partly because it is spread out over so much time, on so many lectures and in so many different articles. The Tribe of Shabazz is not simply the offspring of a group of people who were the product of a disgruntled scientist who went into Africa to prove that He could "make a people that could withstand anything," but a continuum of a vein of expression characteristic of how we as black people, who, when in our natural mind did things that were still superior to the best minds of mankind today. We are so far from what is actually natural for the Blackman, that we think that the trial and error mode of operating of this civilization today is brilliance; when in fact, the incidental actions of the Original Blackman is considered SUPERNATUAL by today's standards. The Messenger of Allah, Elijah Muhammad, delves so far into the most profound depths of wisdom when sharing with us what our God, in person, Master Fard Muhammad, had revealed, it makes you wonder about who is out there dormant and simply waiting to hear that particular word, sentence, paragraph or perspective that will make the light in or above their heads illuminate with Allah's voice communicating with them. In other words, it's not necessary to be mining Facebook, Twitter or Google+, etc, for revelation. It's being handed to you here.
Download or read book Early Islam written by Karl-Heinz Ohlig and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This successor volume to The Hidden Origins of Islam (edited by Karl-Heinz Ohlig and Gerd-R. Puin) continues the pioneering research begun in the first volume into the earliest development of Islam. Using coins, commemorative building inscriptions, and a rigorous linguistic analysis of the Koran along with Persian and Christian literature from the seventh and eighth centuries--when Islam was in its formative stages--five expert contributors attempt a reconstruction of this critical time period. Despite the scholarly nature of their work, the implications of their discoveries are startling: -Islam originally emerged as a sect of Christianity. -Its central theological tenets were influenced by a pre-Nicean, Syrian Christianity. -Aramaic, the common language throughout the Near East for many centuries and the language of Syrian Christianity, significantly influenced the Arabic script and vocabulary used in the Koran. -Finally, it was not until the end of the eighth and ninth centuries that Islam formed as a separate religion, and the Koran underwent a period of historical development of at least 200 years.Controversial and highly intriguing, this critical historical analysis reveals the beginning of Islam in a completely new light.
