Book Jeanne Devereaux Prima Ballerina of Vaudeville and Broadway

Download or read book Jeanne Devereaux Prima Ballerina of Vaudeville and Broadway written by Kathleen Menzie Lesko and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International vaudeville star and Broadway prima ballerina Jeanne Devereaux performed for millions across America and Europe from age eleven until her retirement at forty. A headliner at Radio City Music Hall, she led a large group of performers on one of the first USO Camp Shows tours to Japan. Born Jean Helman, she entered showbiz as a dancing trouper performing in palatial theaters and was one of the last vaudevillians surviving into the 2010s. In her later years living in Pasadena, California, Devereaux indulged her passion for research and writing in the Huntington Library's Rothenberg Reading Room, losing none of her intelligence and wit despite a fading memory. Drawing on personal interviews, theatrical programs, and her diary and letters, this biography illuminates the life and career of one of vaudeville's stars of stage, film, and television.

Book Queen Jeanne and the Promised Land

Download or read book Queen Jeanne and the Promised Land written by David Bryson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1999-09-08 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeanne III d'Albret (1528-1572), queen of Navarre, is a subject of great controversy and fascination, yet only two modern monographs have been written about her, and both are general biographies. This book fills the gap for scholars by concentrating on Jeanne's leading role during the Wars of Religion in the vast territory of Guyenne in southwestern France. Part One, 'The Promised Land', portrays the growth of Protestantism in Guyenne, the rise of the Albret dynasty, and Jeanne's evangelisation. In part Two, 'Exodus', Queen Jeanne emerges as a Huguenot war leader in the attempt, shown in Part Three, 'Sanctuary', to create a Protestant Guyenne by force of arms. The book makes extensive use of contemporary sources, including unpublished diplomatic and military dispatches, and a controversial collection of copies of Jeanne's private correspondence.

This book was released on 2023-08-26 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Jeanne Barret, an impoverished peasant from Burgundy, disguised herself as a man and sailed on the 1766 Bougainville voyage as the naturalist’s assistant. For over two centuries, the story of who this young woman was, why she left her home to undertake such a perilous journey and what happened when she returned has been shrouded in uncertainty. Biologist and award-winning author Danielle Clode embarks on a journey to solve the mysteries surrounding Jeanne Barret. The result is an ode to the sea, to science and to one remarkable woman who, like all explorers, charted her own course for others to follow.

Book Jeanne Hyvrard Wounded Witness

Download or read book Jeanne Hyvrard Wounded Witness written by Helen Vassallo and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical responses to Jeanne Hyvrard have generally categorised her as a writer of 'écriture féminine' and/or autobiography, due to salient features of her oeuvre such as the use of first-person narrative, a cyclic writing style, and the quest for a 'female' language. Within these broader considerations, however, a recurrent motif throughout Hyvrard's writing is that of the body, specifically the female body, represented as suffering from different forms of physical/mental illness and emotional/social malaise. It is this primordial aspect of Hyvrard's work, on which surprisingly little critical analysis has been written, that this monograph explores. It has been demonstrated that Hyvrard's works can be studied as a unity as well as individually, given that all of her texts form part of her wider theory. While this theory is often referred to in abstract terms as 'pensée ronde', 'pensée globale' or 'pensée-femme', this study shows that it can be more specifically highlighted as a theory of dis(-)ease (i.e. the intertwining of physical malady and social malaise, medical terms and metaphor), and, particularly, as a social theory of the dis(-)eased female body.

Book e Jeanne 2004 Part One January through June

Download or read book e Jeanne 2004 Part One January through June written by Jeanne Halsey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-02-17 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?Once I got started, I couldn't stop.? The history of e-Jeanne began around 1999, really ramped up when 9/11 hit our nation, became more organized and intentional thereafter, and continued until ... 2005? You see, e-Jeanne was a precursor of currently popular ?blogs, ? although we called her an ?e-zine.? She was assembled early in the morning (right after my morning devotions ? in fact, I realize that many of my morning devotions somehow crept into the e-Editorials), and then forwarded by e-mail to over 300 people all around the world. I did this two or three days a week for 10 years. Like I said, maybe I am a little crazy. ... This is not a book you can rush through (unless you are only looking for jokes), and I am astonished how small the font has to be in order to fit everything in; you?re going to need a bookmark to help mark your spot. Always, my goal was to fulfill: Let your good works shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your Heavenly Father.? (Matthew 5:16)
