A year ago, that heavy sorrow of his father's death, bringing as it did a cloud over all his future life, hacl well-nigh crushed the Ispring out of him.' But readily as he had been wounded, so readily did he receive the balm which should heal that wound. He had none of the lofty pride which refuses to be com forted. His was not that stern, strong na ture which makes a companion of its woe, taking counsel with it as a man with his friend. If he was easily cast down by dif ficulties which a cooler temperament would have met with quiet disdain, he never put away from him the outstretched hand of re lief, or nursed his disappointment in secret. The old house of Lyneton Abbots was a home still, and the gentle charities of home, if not its sweetest and tenderest, found room to nestle there, like late fiowers among the withered leaves of autumn time, more beautiful for the stillness and decay which surround them. But the fortunes of its owners had not kept pace with their needs. The rent roll of the Manor-house of Lyneton Abbots. She decided in favour of the latter. For, as she said to her husband that same night. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jeanie's Quiet Life: A Novel So near the village church, that at early morning-time the dormer-window of the cham: ber where for generations past the heirs of Lyne ton Abbots had drawn their first breath, cast its shadows upon the east front of the church, quite into the chancel where those same heirs of Lyne ton Abbots lay buried, with folded hands and fast-shut eyelids, beneath canopies of carved stone. And toward evening, when the sun was low, that east front in its turn darkened the dormer-window of the old house; so that life' and death, the cradle and the grave, seemed ever meeting and mingling there. Book excerpt: Clark Gable (1901-1960) was an American film actor who is often referred to as “The King of Hollywood”. He began his career as an extra in Hollywood silent films between 1924-1926, and progressed to supporting roles with a few films for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1930. He landed his first leading role in 1931, and was a leading man in more than 60 motion pictures over the following three decades. He became best known for his performance in Gone with the Wind (1939), for which he gained a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Dear Mr. G., which was first published in 1961, is an engaging account by Clark Gable and Carole Lombard’s personal secretary and business manager, Jean Garceau. Here is the story of a kind, generous man—a man with a sense of humor and who, despite the fame and adulation, still had the humility to say, when it was suggested that he direct films, “Direct? I haven’t learned how to act yet!” This is the true story, in words and pictures, of Clark Gable’s life, chronicled by the one woman who knew him longest—Jean Garceau.

Book Monstrous Motherhood

Download or read book Monstrous Motherhood written by Marilyn Francus and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectral and monstrous mothers populate the cultural and literary landscape of the eighteenth century, overturning scholarly assumptions about this being an era of ideal motherhood. Although credited with the rise of domesticity, eighteenth-century British culture singularly lacked narratives of good mothers, ostensibly the most domestic of females. With startling frequency, the best mother was absent, disembodied, voiceless, or dead. British culture told tales almost exclusively of wicked, surrogate, or spectral mothers—revealing the defects of domestic ideology, the cultural fascination with standards and deviance, and the desire to police maternal behaviors. Monstrous Motherhood analyzes eighteenth-century motherhood in light of the inconsistencies among domestic ideology, narrative, and historical practice. If domesticity was so important, why is the good mother’s story absent or peripheral? What do the available maternal narratives suggest about domestic ideology and the expectations and enactment of motherhood? By focusing on literary and historical mothers in novels, plays, poems, diaries, conduct manuals, contemporary court cases, realist fiction, fairy tales, satire, and romance, Marilyn Francus reclaims silenced maternal voices and perspectives. She exposes the mechanisms of maternal marginalization and spectralization in eighteenth-century culture and revises the domesticity thesis. Monstrous Motherhood will compel scholars in eighteenth-century studies, women’s studies, family history, and cultural studies to reevaluate a foundational assumption that has driven much of the discourse in their fields.
