Book Jean Pierre Roma of the Company of the East of Isle St Jean

Download or read book Jean Pierre Roma of the Company of the East of Isle St Jean written by Jill MacLean and published by Charlottetown, P.E.I. : Acorn Press ; Montague, P.E.I. : Three Rivers Roma Incorporated. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Restless, energetic, and strong-willed, Jean Pierre Roma brought settlers and convict labourers to carve an international trading empire out of the virgin forests of 1700s Isle St. Jean (Prince Edward Island). Roma's dreams, feuds, and parties enlivened the wilderness as he expanded his influence. Maker of the Island's first roads, builder of a thriving community at Trois Rivieres (now Brudenell Point, PEI), and successful entrepreneur, he saw all his accomplishments destroyed by privateers in 1745. Yet the story of Roma lives on as an inspiration and a cautionary tale to modern-day leaders and builders." "Roma continues as the heart of the "Roma at Three Rivers" historic site and nature trails in Eastern Prince Edward Island. This book invites you to retrace his life and walk in his steps on the site where he lived."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Life and Religion at Louisbourg 1713 1758

Download or read book Life and Religion at Louisbourg 1713 1758 written by A. J. B. Johnston and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1996 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The July 1995 proceedings feature 64 papers presented by cereal chemists, geneticists, physiologists, and researchers working with pre-harvest germination, sprouting damage, and dormancy in order to help growers succeed in harvesting their crops before rain or fog induces pre-harvest sprouting and lowers the commercial value of their crops. The 1995 program develops more molecular approaches to sprouting problems than in previous years, and highlights international developments in gene location, plant processes at a molecular level, and new technologies to develop more efficient diagnostic and screening tests. Book Life and Religion at Louisbourg 1713 1758

Download or read book Life and Religion at Louisbourg 1713 1758 written by A. Johnston and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1996-06-26 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A.J.B. Johnston establishes the secular and religious contexts of life at Louisbourg and traces the mixed fortunes of three religious groups: the Récollets of Brittany, who acted as parish priests and chaplains; the Brothers of Charity of Saint John of God, who operated the King's Hospital; and the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame, who ran the local school for girls. Drawing on the extensive material in the Archives of the Fortress of Louisbourg, Johnston notes the groups' remarkable persistence in the face of personnel shortages, financial burdens, and conflicts with secular authorities and rival religious bodies. Not the least of their problems was the profound parsimony of the Louisbourgeois who declined to build a parish church or pay a compulsory tithe. Yet despite this independent stance, the author demonstrates, religion was at the centre of family and community life. Life and Religion at Louisbourg contributes substantially to the social as well as the religious history of New France.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AJ.B. Johnston establishes the secular and religious contexts of life in Louisbourg, and then traces the mixed fortunes of the three religious groups that served the French stronghold of Louisbourg during the eighteenth century. These were the Recollets of Brittany, who acted as parish priests and chaplains; the Brothers of Charity of Saint John of God, who operated the King's Hospital; and the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame, who conducted the local school for girls. Drawing on the extensive material in the Archives of the Fortress of Louisbourg, he notes the groups7 remarkable persistence in the face of personnel shortages, financial burdens, and conflicts with secular authorities and rival religious bodies. Not the least of their problems was the profound parsimony of the Louisbourgeois who declined to build a parish church or pay a compulsory tithe. Yet despite this independent stance, religion was at the centre of family and community life in Louisbourg, as the author demonstrates in a chapter devoted to the faith, morality, and popular beliefs of the town's inhabitants. The colourful military history of Louisbourg has been the subject of numerous books and articles, and the economy of He Royale has received close attention in recent years. This first comprehensive study of the religious aspects of life in this outpost of France's overseas empire contributes substantially to the social as well as the religious history of New France.

Book Land Settlement and Politics on Eighteenth century Prince Edward Island

Download or read book Land Settlement and Politics on Eighteenth century Prince Edward Island written by J. M. Bumsted and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1987 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after Prince Edward Island was transferred from French to British sovereignty in 1763, virtually the entire land surface was turned over to private proprietors on the understanding that they would finance both settlement and the administration of the territory. While the proprietors did not fulfil their obligations, they clung tenanciously to their privileges, ultimately becoming an anachronistic group of landlords on a North American continent where freehold tenure was the norm. J.M. Bumsted goes beyond the previous "heroes" (residents) and "villains" (landlords) approach of much of Island historiography by demonstrating the intimate interweaving of the issues of land, politics, and settlement.

Book Three Centuries and the Island

Download or read book Three Centuries and the Island written by Andrew Hill Clark and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1959-12-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is one of the first in the field of historical geography to be published in Canada. Written after exhaustive research, it uses a particular approach to the study of historical agricultural geography which concentrates on the use of basic distributional evidence for the description and interpretation of the changing character of any region through any period of time. By the analysis of over 1200 maps, some of which form part of the text of the book, Professor Clark studies agriculture as the dominant economic activity of Prince Edward Island and traces with remarkable clarity through the changing patterns of land culture throughout the province. The book begins with a description of the natural geography of the Island which, despite its small size, shows surprising variety. It goes on to prove the necessity for careful consideration of the background of habit and prejudice of groups of different origin when studying the changing geographies of land use. The settlement of the Island is traced from the time it was used as a summer campground by the Micmac Indians. Details of the arrival of the first Acadians, the transfer to British rule, and the subsequent influx of Scottish, Irish, Loyalist, and English stock are given together with evidence of the effect their coming had on the agriculture of the region. One hundred and fifty-five maps and sixteen tables to illustrate the distribution of population by area and origin, changes in kind and distribution of crops, census of livestock, etc., from the early eighteenth century to the present day, and from the days when the potato was unknown as a crop through the fur-farming era. The author presents this study as part of his life-work, a programme of research on the settlement overseas in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries of the people from the British Isles. He is descended from Prince Edward Island settlers and writes of the province from a background of personal knowledge of, and affection for, the land of his forbears.
