Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recasting the history of African American literature, Shadow Archives brings to life a slew of newly discovered texts—including Claude McKay’s Amiable with Big Teeth—to tell the stories of black special collections and their struggle for institutional recognition. Jean-Christophe Cloutier offers revelatory readings of major African American writers, including McKay, Richard Wright, Ann Petry, and Ralph Ellison, and provides a nuanced view of how archival methodology, access, and the power dynamics of acquisitions shape literary history. Shadow Archives argues that the notion of the archive is crucial to our understanding of postwar African American literary history. Cloutier combines his own experiences as a researcher and archivist with a theoretically rich account of the archive to offer a pioneering study of the importance of African American authors’ archival practices and how these shaped their writing. Given the lack of institutions dedicated to the black experience, the novel became an alternative site of historical preservation, a means to ensure both individual legacy and group survival. Such archivism manifests in the work of these authors through evolving lifecycles where documents undergo repurposing, revision, insertion, falsification, transformation, and fictionalization, sometimes across decades. An innovative interdisciplinary consideration of literary papers, Shadow Archives proposes new ways for literary scholars to engage with the archive.

Book Jean Christophe Volume I

Download or read book Jean Christophe Volume I written by Romain Rolland and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jean-Christophe" is the history of the development of a musician of genius. The present volume comprises the first four volumes of the original French, viz.: "L'Aube," "Le Matin," "L'Adolescent," and "La Révólte," which are designated in the translation as Part I—The Dawn; Part II—Morning; Part III—Youth; Part IV—Revolt. Parts I and II carry Jean-Christophe from the moment of his birth to the day when, after his first encounter with Woman, at the age of fifteen, he falls back upon a Puritan creed. Parts III and IV describe the succeeding five years of his life, when, at the age of twenty, his sincerity, integrity, and unswerving honesty have made existence impossible for him in the little Rhine town of his birth. An act of open revolt against German militarism compels him to cross the frontier and take refuge in Paris, and the remainder of this vast book is devoted to the adventures of Jean-Christophe in France.

Book Jean Christophe Journey s End

Download or read book Jean Christophe Journey s End written by Romain Rolland and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the time being they were in the period of the lean kine. Christophe had stayed up half the night to finish a dull piece of musical transcription for Hecht: he did not get to bed until dawn, and slept like a log to make up for lost time. Olivier had gone out early: he had a lecture to give at the other end of Paris. About eight o'clock the porter came with the letters, and rang the bell. As a rule he did not wait for them to come, but just slipped the letters under the door. This morning he went on knocking. Only half awake, Christophe went to the door growling: he paid no attention to what the smiling, loquacious porter was saying about an article in the paper, but just took the letters without looking at them, pushed the door to without closing it, went to bed, and was soon fast asleep once more.

Book Jean Christophe in Paris The Market Place Antoinette the House

Download or read book Jean Christophe in Paris The Market Place Antoinette the House written by Romain Rolland and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disorder in order. Untidy officials offhanded in manner. Travelers protesting against the rules and regulations, to which they submitted all the same. Christophe was in France. After having satisfied the curiosity of the customs, he took his seat again in the train for Paris. Night was over the fields that were soaked with the rain. The hard lights of the stations accentuated the sadness of the interminable plain buried in darkness. The trains, more and more numerous, that passed, rent the air with their shrieking whistles, which broke upon the torpor of the sleeping passengers. The train was nearing Paris. Christophe was ready to get out an hour before they ran in; he had jammed his hat down on his head; he had buttoned his coat up to his neck for fear of the robbers, with whom he had been told Paris was infested; twenty times he had got up and sat down; twenty times he had moved his bag from the rack to the seat, from the seat to the rack, to the exasperation of his fellow-passengers, against whom he knocked, every time with his usual clumsiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Christophe Krafft, born into a Belgian-German family of musicians, seems destined for music from an early age: he is sensitive to sound, learns to play the piano, and, with the help of his grandfather, soon writes his first compositions. This leads him to become a court musician of the Grand Duchy on the Rhine, where he lives. Along the way, he experiences love, setbacks, poverty, but also success. After a violent incident forces him to flee, he finds shelter in Paris, where he meets a friend for life: Olivier. But his idealistic worldview and stubborn character repeatedly get him into trouble, forcing him to seek refuge in Switzerland. Jean-Christophe is the story of a man, chronicled from his birth to his death. Romain Rolland, strongly motivated by his own biography of Beethoven, always envisioned it as a novel that flows “like a river”: meandering, propelled by its own force, not to be channeled by plot. This is embodied in Jean-Christophe through extensive digressions on the author’s views on nationality, politics, music, and culture in early twentieth century Europe. Jean-Christophe thus became the first roman-fleuve, or river-novel, a term most famously applied to Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. For this contribution to literature, Romain was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915. Jean-Christophe was published in ten volumes in the original French, while Gilbert Cannan’s English translation appeared in 3 volumes, roughly encompassing Jean-Christophe’s youth and adolescence, his adulthood, and the latter years of his life. This Standard Ebooks edition brings all volumes of Cannan’s translation together. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: “A beautifully memorable and unusual story about war and what it does to us” from the bestselling author and founder of Doctors Without Borders (The Independent). In 1919, in a small town in the province of Berry, France, under the crushing heat of summer, a war hero is being held prisoner in an abandoned barracks. In front of the door to his prison, a mangy dog barks night and day. Miles from where he is being held, in the French countryside, a young extraordinarily intelligent woman works the land, waiting and hoping. A judge whose principles have been sorely shaken by the war is traveling to an unknown location to sort out certain affairs of which it is better not to speak. Three characters. In their midst, a dog who holds the key both to their destinies and to this intriguing plot. Full of poetry and life, The Red Collar is at once a delightfully simple narrative about the human spirit and a profound work about loyalty and love. “A superbly crafted little gem that does everything a novel can do in less than 150 pages . . . It’s a lucky reader who gets to experience the power of The Red Collar.” —Shelf Awareness “A graceful, unpretentious little miracle, a morality play of immense skill.” —The Irish Times “In The Red Collar, a delicate and poetic novel, Rufin examines that which makes us human.” —L’express (France) “Without special effects, with simplicity and the pure pleasure of telling a story, Jean-Christophe Rufin explores the meaning of faithfulness, loyalty, and honor.” —Le Figaro (France)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post Normal Accident revisits Perrow’s classic Normal Accident published in 1984 and provides additional insights to our sociological view of safety-critical organisations. The operating landscape of high-risk systems has indeed profoundly changed in the past 20 to 30 years but the core sociological models of safety remain associated with classics of the 1980s and 1990s. This book examines the conceptual and empirical evolutions of the past two to three decades to explore their implications for safety management based on several strands of works in various research traditions in safety (e.g. cognitive engineering and system safety, high-reliability organisation, sociology of safety, regulatory studies) and other interdisciplinary fields (e.g. international business, globalisation studies, strategy management, ecology). It offers a new and insightful interpretation to the challenges of today. It investigates how globalisation has reconfigured the operating landscape of high-risk systems and emphasises the importance of thinking safety through a strategic angle. This book serves as an ideal resource for the safety professionals and safety researchers from any established disciplines such as sociology, engineering, psychology, political science or management. Features: Introduces an original analysis of popular safety writings, including Normal Accident, by Perrow Identifies the importance of thinking safety from a sociological angle with the help of key writers Stresses the need for greater sensitivity to strategy and "errors from the top" when it comes to the safety of high-risk systems Explains how globalisation has reconfigured the operating landscape of high-risk systems Renews our understanding of the current safety management challenges in an increasingly global risk picture
