Download or read book George Gershwin written by Howard Pollack and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-01-15 with total page 938 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive biography of George Gershwin (1898-1937) unravels the myths surrounding one of America's most celebrated composers and establishes the enduring value of his music. Gershwin created some of the most beloved music of the twentieth century and, along with Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter, helped make the golden age of Broadway golden. Howard Pollack draws from a wealth of sketches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, books, articles, recordings, films, and other materials—including a large cache of Gershwin scores discovered in a Warner Brothers warehouse in 1982—to create an expansive chronicle of Gershwin’s meteoric rise to fame. He also traces Gershwin’s powerful presence that, even today, extends from Broadway, jazz clubs, and film scores to symphony halls and opera houses. Pollack’s lively narrative describes Gershwin’s family, childhood, and education; his early career as a pianist; his friendships and romantic life; his relation to various musical trends; his writings on music; his working methods; and his tragic death at the age of 38. Unlike Kern, Berlin, and Porter, who mostly worked within the confines of Broadway and Hollywood, Gershwin actively sought to cross the boundaries between high and low, and wrote works that crossed over into a realm where art music, jazz, and Broadway met and merged. The author surveys Gershwin’s entire oeuvre, from his first surviving compositions to the melodies that his brother and principal collaborator, Ira Gershwin, lyricized after his death. Pollack concludes with an exploration of the performances and critical reception of Gershwin's music over the years, from his time to ours.

Book A Study of the Exchange of Influences Between the Music of Early Twentieth Century Parisian Composers and Ragtime Blues and Early Jazz

Download or read book A Study of the Exchange of Influences Between the Music of Early Twentieth Century Parisian Composers and Ragtime Blues and Early Jazz written by Geoffrey Jennings Haydon and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In studying the music of early twentieth-century Parisian composers and certain early American jazz musicians, a relationship emerges revealing a mutual exchange of ideas. Composers such as Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Erik Satie, Darius Milhaud and Igor Stravinsky were compelled to incorporate elements derived from American popular music into some of their compositions. In similar fashion, American jazz musicians such as Bix Beiderbecke and George Gershwin were intrigued by the impressionistic compositions of these French composers. Gershwin and Beiderbecke were among the first jazz musicians to successfully utilize many impressionistic devices in their improvisations and compositions. Ragtime, American minstrelsy, and the cakewalk are considered to be strong influences in Debussy's Minstrels, "General Lavine"--Eccentric, Golliwog's Cakewalk, and Le petit Negre. Milhaud visited Harlem in the early 1920s where he heard authentic versions of American jazz and blues. His La Creation du monde reveals these American influences in his choice of instruments, use of blues material and sections reminiscent of the early New Orleans style of jazz. Ravel took an active interest in jazz in the 1920s. The "Blues" movement from the Sonata for Violin and Piano and the two piano concerti of Ravel effectively incorporate blues components and on occasion, are reminiscent of certain compositions of George Gershwin. In America, Bix Beiderbecke was fascinated by impressionistic music. The use of whole tone scales, extended chord tones, altered harmonies, and dominant ninth chords moving in parallel motion in his piano composition In a Mist influenced other jazz musicians to consider using these impressionistic devices in their improvisations and compositions. George Gershwin was particularly interested in the compositions of Debussy and Ravel. In addition to using many of the same devices as Beiderbecke, Gershwin directly incorporated material derived from Debussy's Preludes and Ravel's Miroirs into some of his compositions. Gershwin's use of quartal harmonies and parallel chord progressions are impressionistic influences that frequently occur in his compositions. Gershwin and Beiderbecke helped expand the harmonic vocabulary of jazz and with each successive generation of jazz musicians, these impressionistic devices became more and more common in jazz improvisations and compositions.

Book Maurice Ravel

Download or read book Maurice Ravel written by Benjamin Ivry and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurice Ravel: A Life is the first convincing attempt to paint a portrait of the life and work of the hitherto enigmatic composer of Bolero, Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, and L'enfant Et Les Sortileges. Ivry offers here a convincing solution to the much-discussed "mystery" of Ravel's sexuality. More than simply "outing" Ravel as a gay man for the first time among numerous writers on this composer, this book discusses how his secretive sexuality impacted his work. Using unpublished documents, letters, articles and memoirs, many of which were previously unknown even to Arbie Orenstein, universally considered the world's leading scholar of Ravel studies, Ivry presents a more rounded view of Ravel, man and musician. Descriptions of musical works are in non-technical language, friendly to the reader with no specialized knowledge of classical music. Like Ivry's widely acclaimed biography of Poulenc, universally seen as the standard life of this composer in any language, his new Ravel is likely to become a classic of contemporary musical biography.
