Book excerpt: To love someone, you must first see them. The Thorpe triplets are so entangled with each other, they don’t know where one ends and the other two begin. But they like it that way, and why shouldn’t they? Their parents have never seen them as anything but the ideal sons they are not, so they have made a safe haven together. But do they really see each other at all, or just the roles they play to keep themselves from drowning under the weight of parental expectations? Jude is the daredevil, Jayden is the angry one, and Nate is the artist, which of course also means always on the edge of a depression only his brothers and his music keep at bay. And then one of them crosses a line too far and a kiss becomes a betrayal that threatens to tear them apart. As children, there was nothing that could come between them, but now that they walk their own paths, can they find their way back to each other? “Entwined: a love story” is a novel exploration of siblings, boundaries, and self-love. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A detail-rich picture book.” —Kirkus Reviews “Straightforward and inviting.” —School Library Journal From award-winning author Lesa Cline-Ransome and acclaimed illustrator Raúl Colón comes the sensitive, informative, and inspiring picture book biography of the remarkable mathematician Katherine Johnson, one of the NASA “human computers” whose work was critical to the first US space launch. Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or astronauts walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as “human computers” used their knowledge, pencils, adding machines, and writing paper to calculate the orbital mechanics needed to launch spacecraft. Katherine Johnson was one of these mathematicians who used trajectories and complex equations to chart the space program. Even as Virginia’s Jim Crow laws were in place in the early 1950s, Katherine worked analyzing data at the NACA (later NASA) Langley laboratory. In 1962, as NASA prepared for the orbital mission of John Glenn, Katherine Johnson was called upon and John Glenn said “get the girl” (Katherine Johnson) to run the numbers by hand to chart the complexity of the orbital flight. He knew that his flight couldn’t work without her unique skills. President Barack Obama awarded Katherine Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and her incredible life inspired the Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures. Get to know this incredible and inspirational woman with this beautifully illustrated picture book from an award-winning duo.

Book excerpt: I’m a loner, and it seems I always will be. It’s safer that way. My last girl up and left because things got too dangerous. Not that I blame her. It’d be better if I could stay away from love for good, but the pretty single mom who dances at my club has my attention, then my body, and now my heart. The world is crumbling around me, with villains gunning for my MC left and right, and the only thing that saves me is her. Scarily enough, she’s trying to save herself. She’s the one that pulls my black soul up from the darkness and forces me to breathe again with her warmth. I just can’t help but wonder how she’ll feel when she realizes that I’m no different from the evil that’s after us. I’m more of what she doesn’t need. I wish I was a good guy and could walk away, but I’m in too deep. I’ve gone too far. No matter what or who comes our way, I’ll be ready to protect what is mine. Cause that’s what bad boys do.

Download or read book Military Space Ethics written by Nikki Coleman and published by . This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As space develops as a potential war fighting domain, so does the need to have ethical scrutiny. Since the 1960s there have been core space treaties that together with national laws, provide a clear framework for both military and civilian space activities, yet ethical questions still exist around space warfare. Is it appropriate to respond kinetically on earth to a threat in space? Does just war theory apply in space and does the remoteness of space lower or raise the threshold for armed conflicts? Will the creation of new space forces start a space arms race? New combat environments also create a number of new challenges, including whether future war in space will be conducted by robots or space marines, and how the dual-use nature of satellites will impact on their permissibility as targets in any future conflict. As technologies become more widespread, space may be threatened by the likes of non-state groups and rogue states, leading to a need to inhibit their movement in space. In space, differences are magnified; resources are especially scarce, risks are multiplied, and specialized medical care is a world away. The physical and psychological distance between combatants in modern warfare applies also to space and the impacts of remote warfare need to be considered including the potential for moral injury and psychological trauma. With greater military power comes greater responsibility and this responsibility is carried out at the end of a chain of decisions and technologies. This book's relevancy will not be lost on students at service academies and staff colleges in preparing them for the task of emphasizing ethical responsibility in space to those whom they will lead in the future.
