Although they are of Japanese descent, most were born in Brazil and are culturally Brazilian. As a result, they have become Japan's newest ethnic minority. Drawing upon close to two years of multisite fieldwork in Brazil and Japan, Takeyuki Tsuda has written a comprehensive ethnography that examines the ethnic experiences and reactions of both Japanese Brazilian immigrants and their native Japanese hosts.

Book excerpt: In this thoroughly revised fourth edition with ten new chapters. Lola Romanucci-Ross and her co-authors provide thought-provoking discussions on the importance of ethnicity in different cultural and social contexts. They outline how social change as a result of interethnic conflict is a reality of human history and of modern times. Individual chapters propose that the history of social life in different cultures is a continual rhythm of conflict and accommodation between groups, both external and internal. The authors focus on the key topics of changing ethnic and national identities; migration and ethnic minorities; ethnic ascription versus self-definitions; and shifting ethnic identities and political control. There are chapters covering ethnic identities in Africa (including Zaire and South Africa). Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Thailand, the United States, and the former Yugoslavia. This new survey will serve as an excellent text for courses in race and ethnic relations, anthropology, and ethnic studies. Book jacket.

Book Lecture Economique de l Histoire du Japon

Download or read book Lecture Economique de l Histoire du Japon written by Philippe Huysveld and published by Philippe Huysveld - GBMC. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Keywords: Japan, Japon, Economie du Japon, Japanese Economy, Histoire du Japon, Japanese History, Lecture Economique, Histoire Economique, Economic History, Commercer avec le Japon, Doing Business with Japan, Commercer au Japon, Doing Business in Japan, Faire des Affaires au Japon, Emploi à vie, Life Employment, Innovation au Japon, les Japonais, the Japanese

Book excerpt: In AU JAPON (1904), de Guerville recounts with mostly comical gaze—and perhaps a touch of imagination—his experiences in the Far East during the years 1892 and 1894. As the author himself confesses, “each of us sees things in our own way.” After a century, that of Monsieur de Guerville is worth rediscovering. In addition to translating the original French, DANIEL C. KANE provides a thorough introduction, a glossary of key figures, a chronology of de Guerville’s publications, and an index.

Book A Machine Translation Approach to Cross Language Text Retrieval

Download or read book A Machine Translation Approach to Cross Language Text Retrieval written by María Gabriela Fernandez-Diaz and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross Language Text Retrieval (CLTR) has been defined as the retrieval of documents in a language different from that of the original query. To make this possible some kind of mechanism has to be applied in order to translate the information contained in the source sentence. Many different approaches have been carried out with the purpose of transferring the information from the source language query to the target language one. Though all these methods deal with a way of translating as much information as possible from the source query, little research has been conducted in relation to the field of Machine Translation (MT). The purpose of this research work is to determine the feasibility of using MT techniques for CLTR. Specifically, I will describe how a MT system has been adapted without much effort to translate Spanish queries of a specific domain, i.e. Finance and Economics, into English in order to retrieve documents related to that field. The results of this process will then be compared with the results obtained from the retrieval of the original English queries. Thus, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using MT for CLTR.

Book Subverting Sex Gender and Genre in Cuban and Mexican Detective Fiction

Download or read book Subverting Sex Gender and Genre in Cuban and Mexican Detective Fiction written by Ailsa Peate and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of bodies and sex in detective fiction has been a long-term feature of this internationally popular genre. Titillation is at the centre of narratives reliant upon discovery and revelation: motives and criminals are slowly revealed, along with sexualized and violated bodies – from femmes fatales to the corpses of victims. A satisfying, gratifying genre for its readership, the detective novel promises the disruption and subsequent restoration of order in societies tarnished by disillusionment which hope for a better future. This book takes as its focus examples of detective fiction from Cuba and Mexico during or in the aftermath of huge social upheaval (the Special Period and the War on Drugs), analyzing representations of sexualities, bodies, and the genre itself. Through an investigation of novels by Leonardo Padura and Amir Valle of Cuba, and Bef and Rogelio Guedea of Mexico, this work investigates increasingly fluid sexualities and bodies in challenging examples of metaphysical detective fiction, a particularly anxious subgenre which challenges both the structures and limits of the detective novel and the reader’s understanding of true and false and right and wrong, representative of troubling periods of severe social disruption for Cuba and Mexico.
