Book Japan s Lost Decade

Download or read book Japan s Lost Decade written by W. Miles Fletcher III and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the 'lost decade' of the 1990s is central to explaining Japan today. Following a period of record high growth, the chronic downturn after 1990 raised fundamental questions about the course of the world's third largest economy. This crisis also presented Japan with the opportunity for transformative change. Changes have followed, some of them less than might be expected, and some of them far more sweeping than is generally realized. This volume presents a wide range of international perspectives on post-bubble Japan, exploring the effects of the long downturn on the views of the Japanese business community, management practices, and national policies. To what degree has Japan's traumatic experience prompted basic reforms in terms of legal changes, corporate governance, business strategy, and the longterm national vision for the economy? This book was originally published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.

Book Private and Public Sector Collaboration in Guam s Tourism Industry Is Guam Prepared for the Future

Download or read book Private and Public Sector Collaboration in Guam s Tourism Industry Is Guam Prepared for the Future written by Fred R. Schumann and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of tourism development has been explored by a number of scholars and increasingly, over the past decade, more literature has become available on tourism development on small islands . For many of the small island territories or nations, they share a number of major issues in the area of tourism. These include vast distances from source markets, foreign investment and the resulting leakage of revenue, over-dependence on tourism (mono-structured economy), dependence on imports, and an overburdened infrastructure, just to name a few (Gössling 2003; Harrison, 2004; McElroy, 2006). Most island destinations rely on stakeholders from not only a single sector, but from both private and public sectors to tackle these issues (Buhalis, 1999). As a tourism-dependent economy, Guam receives at least sixty percent of its governmental revenues from tourism. Japanese visitors had made up over 80 percent of Guam s visitor arrivals in earlier years, but numbers started to drop in recent years due to a number of reasons, such as natural disasters, world events, as well as stiffer competition from similar resort destinations. Still, the market remains the largest source of visitors for Guam, with South Korea coming in a distant second in ranking making up approximately 12 percent of Guam s visitor arrivals. As background information to illustrate the importance of public and private sector collaboration efforts on Guam, this research examines some of the changes occurring in Japanese overseas travel. It also reviews how tourist industry stakeholders in a nearby destination like Guam can adopt strategies to meet the changing expectations of this important market. The primary research of this thesis involves the analysis of qualitative data generated from in-depth interviewing in examining the issue of collaboration between the private and public sectors as a method for assisting Guam s tourism industry to prepare for the future. This is followed by multiple case research (Yin 1994) that investigates strategies used in destinations to enhance tourist experiences through attractions. The SWOT Analysis is also utilized as an example of a tool to assist stakeholders in understanding the environment of the present to prepare strategies for the future.

Book Defenders of Japan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Garren Mulloy
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2021-12-01
  • ISBN : 0197644074
  • Pages : 259 pages

Download or read book Defenders of Japan written by Garren Mulloy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan's post-war armed forces are a paradox, both embarrassing remnants of the past and valuable repositories of experience. This book charts the development of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) from 1954 as both unorthodox military institutions and servants of a civil society that decries militarism. Investigating JSDF contributions to Japanese and global security, the evolution of such contributions during and after the Cold War, and their possible reconfiguration for Japan's security needs ahead, Garren Mulloy offers insight into the Forces' past, present and future. He explores the characteristics and contradictions of Japanese policy, including novel approaches in response to an increasingly assertive China, the latent threat of North Korea and contributory pressure from the US. Though the American alliance remains the core of Japanese security, new partnerships and international overtures will also shape the Forces' place in Prime Minister Abe's new vision of 'proactive contributions to peace'. Defenders of Japan deconstructs how the JSDF have adapted and will continue to adapt within domestic norms, caught between unresolved legacies of Japan's imperial past and a dynamically shifting balance of future global power.
