Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Centring the Periphery New Perspectives on Collecting East Asian Objects written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centring the Periphery: New Perspectives on Collecting East Asian Objects, edited by Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik, explores East Asian collections in "peripheral" areas of Europe and North America and their relationship with the East Asian collections in former imperial and colonial centres. The authors not only present the stories of a number of less well-known individual objects and collections, but also discuss the evolution of fashions and tastes in East Asian objects in areas that were not centres of European colonial power, and the socioeconomic conditions in which they were collected. To date, research on the collecting of East Asian objects in the Euro-American region has focused primarily on larger collections and collectors. The stories from the periphery, however, deserve to be told. They point to important departures from the dominant discourses and practices of East Asian collecting, thus raising questions about established taxonomies and knowledge systems. With contributions by Tina Berdajs, Chou Wei-Chiang, Györgyi Fajcsák, Jin Han, Sarah Laursen, Beatrix Mecsi, Motoh Helena, Stacey Pierson, Maria Sobotka, Filip Suchomel, Barbara Trnovec, Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik, Brigid Vance, Maja Veselič, Nataša Visočnik Gerželj, Bettina Zorn.

Download or read book Plunder and Pleasure written by Max Put and published by Hotei Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plunder and pleasure is the first book of its kind to provide an in-depth study of the role played by dealers and collectors of art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the Western craze for East Asian art was at its peak. The book comprises an overview of Japonisme and the translation into English of two important French texts detailing the trade in Asian art at this time: Notes d'un Bibeloteur au Japon by the art dealer Philippe Sichel (1839/40-99) and Souvenirs d'un vieil Amateur d'Art de l'Extrême-Orient by the collector Raymond Koechlin (1860-1931). Both translations are extensively annotated. A discussion of the content and significance of the translations as well as short biographical sketches of Sichel and Koechlin are also included. Plunder and Pleasure casts new light on the subject of Western tastes for East Asian art during this period and furthers our understanding of the cultural relations between the Far East and the West that were going on at this time.

Download or read book Expressionism and Poster Design in Germany 1905 1922 written by Kathleen G. Chapman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Expressionism and Poster Design in Germany 1905–1925, Kathleen Chapman re-defines Expressionism by situating it in relation to the most common type of picture in public space during the Wilhelmine twentieth century, the commercial poster. Focusing equally on visual material and contemporaneous debates surrounding art, posters, and the image in general, this study reveals that conceptions of a “modern” image were characterized not so much by style or mode of production and distribution, but by a visual rhetoric designed to communicate more directly than words. As instances of such rhetoric, Expressionist art and posters emerge as equally significant examples of this modern image, demonstrating the interconnectedness of the aesthetic, the utilitarian, and the commercial in European modernism.
