Excerpt: The international name for the body of water which is bordered by Japan, North Korea, Russia, and South Korea is disputed. In 1992, objections to the name Sea of Japan were first raised by North Korea and South Korea at the Sixth United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names. The Japanese government supports the use of the name "Sea of Japan," while South Korea supports the name "East Sea," and North Korea supports the name "East Sea of Korea." Currently, most international maps and documents use either the name Sea of Japan (or equivalent translation) by itself, or include both the name Sea of Japan and East Sea, often with East Sea listed in parentheses or otherwise marked as a secondary name. The International Hydrographic Organization, the international governing body for the naming bodies of water around the world, in 2012 rejected the use of "East Sea" and recognized the term "Sea of Japan" as the only title for the sea. The involved countries (especially Japan and South Korea) have advanced a variety of arguments to support their preferred name(s). Many of the arguments revolve around determining when the name Sea of Japan became the common name. South Korea argues that historically the more common name was East Sea, Sea of Korea, or another similar variant. South Korea further argues that the name Sea of Japan did not become common until Korea was under Japanese rule, at which time it had no ability to influence international affairs. Japan argues that...

Book Between China and Japan

Download or read book Between China and Japan written by Joshua A. Fogel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past thirty-five years, Joshua Fogel has pioneered the study of Sino-Japanese cultural and political relations—understood as the intersections of the histories of these two countries. This volume brings together many of his essays and reviews in this new field. For a variety of reasons discussed within, scholars have been reluctant to look at these two nation’s historical connections, either through comparative analysis or actual interactions. Fogel’s work has focused squarely here. Among the issues addressed are Japanese scholarly views of modern China and Chinese history, Chinese considerations of the Japanese language in the Ming and Qing periods, the Japanese immigration to the East Asian Mainland (especially to Shanghai and Harbin), and more.

Book Names in the Economy

Download or read book Names in the Economy written by Terhi Ainiala and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economy has an increasingly powerful role in the contemporary global world. Academic scholars who study names have recognised this, and, as such, onomastic research has expanded from personal and place names towards names that reflect the new commercial culture. Companies are aware of the significance of naming. Brand, product and company names play an important role in business. Culture produces names and names produce culture. Commercial names shape cultures, on the one hand, and changes in cultures may affect commercial names on the other. The world of the economy and business has created its own culture of names, but this naming culture may also affect other names; even place names and personal names are influenced by it. Names in the Economy: Cultural Prospects is composed of 20 articles that were produced from a collection of papers presented in 2012 at the fourth Names in the Economy symposium in Turku, Finland. These articles will equally be of interest to both academics and professionals. The goal of this book is multidisciplinary and theoretically diverse: it contemplates commercial-bound names from the viewpoints of linguistics and onomastics, as well as marketing and branding research. In addition to traditional onomastic standpoints, there are newer linguistic theories, sociological and communicational views, multimodality theory, and branding theories. The authors are scholars from three continents and from ten different countries.

Book Migration Governance in Asia

Download or read book Migration Governance in Asia written by Kazunari Sakai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this book investigate migration governance in Asia through a multilevel analysis, addressing its local, national and regional dimensions as well as placing it in the wider context of global migration governance. Core case studies include migration to and within Japan, the migration of Burmese and Tibetan refugees to India, and the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar. Evaluating the rules, norms and processes put in place by state and non-state actors to cope with international migration, the contributors focus especially on migration flows and the extent to which Asian cases are distinct from those elsewhere. This includes comparative cases from Europe and the United States to provide a comparative context for the analysis of Asia. A valuable resource for students and scholars of migration studies, especially those with a particular interest in Asia.
