Book Japanese Tone Structure

Download or read book Japanese Tone Structure written by Janet Breckenridge Pierrehumbert and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1988 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Japanese Tone Structure" provides a thorough, phonetically grounded description of accent and intonation in Tokyo Japanese and uses it to develop an explicit account of surface phonological representation. The unusual amount of quantitative phonetic data analyzed and its testing in a detailed model make this an important new study for theoretical phonologists, phoneticians, and specialists in Japanese. The authors' broader purpose, however, is to develop a general theory of surface representation that can capture salient facts about prosodic structure in all languages and provide a suitable input to phonetic rules. The theory integrates autosegmental principles into a metrical account of prosodic structures in an explicit formalism. The work establishes phonology and phonetics as a productive area in cognitive science.Janet B. Pierrehumbert is a member of the technical staff in the Department of Artificial Intelligence Research at AT&T Bell Laboratories. Mary E. Beckman is an Assistant Professor in the Department. of Linguistics at Ohio State University. "Japanese Tone Structure" is a Linguistic Inquiry Monograph.

Book The Structure of Tone

Download or read book The Structure of Tone written by Zhiming Bao and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues a fresh theory about the structure of tone. Bao investigates a wide range of tone sandhi data from various Chinese dialects and other Asian tone languages, providing empirical support for his proposal that tone is a formal entity which consists of register and contour. Bao establishes a clear typological distinction between register tone languages and contour tone languages whose contour tones have a more complex structure.

Book Contrastiveness in Information Structure Alternatives and Scalar Implicatures

Download or read book Contrastiveness in Information Structure Alternatives and Scalar Implicatures written by Chungmin Lee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A group of authors containing both leading authorities and young researchers addresses a number of issues of contrastiveness, polarity items and exhaustivity, quantificational expressions and the implicatures they generate, and the interaction between semantic operators and speech acts. The 19 contributions provide insights on the interplay between semantics and pragmatics. The volume’s reach is cross-linguistic and takes an unorthodox multi-paradigm approach. Languages studied range from European languages including Hungarian and Russian to East Asian languages such as Japanese and Korean, with rich data on focus and discourse particles. This volume contributes to a major area of research in linguistics of the last decade, and provides novel, state-of-the-art views on some of the central topics in linguistic research, and will appeal to an audience of graduate and advanced undergraduate researchers in linguistics, philosophy of language and computational linguistics.

Book Mediatization and Sociolinguistic Change

Download or read book Mediatization and Sociolinguistic Change written by Jannis Androutsopoulos and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume to focus on the role of media in processes of linguistic change, one of the most contested issues in contemporary sociolinguistics. Its 17 chapters and five section commentaries present cutting-edge research from variationist and interactional sociolinguistics, media linguistics, language ideology research, and minority language studies. The volume advances our understanding of linguistic change in a mediatized world in three ways. First, it introduces the notions of sociolinguistic change and mediatization to create a broader theoretical framing than the one offered by ‘the media’ and ‘language change’. Second, it takes the discussion beyond the notions of ‘influence’ and ‘effect’ and the binary distinction of ‘media’ vs. ‘community language’. Third, it examines the relation of sociolinguistic change and mediatization and from five complementary viewpoints: media influence on linguistic structure; media engagement in interaction; change in mass and new media language; language-ideological change; and the role of media for minority languages. Bringing these strands of sociolinguistic scholarship together, this volume examines their shared references and common lines of thinking.

Book Japanese

Download or read book Japanese written by Shoichi Iwasaki and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-23 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese ranks as the ninth most widely spoken language of the world with more than 127 million speakers in the island state of Japan. Its genetic relation has been a topic of heated discussion, but Altaic and Austronesian languages appear to have contributed to the early formation of this language. Japanese has a long written tradition, which goes back to texts from the eighth century CE. The modern writing system employs a mixture of Chinese characters and two sets of syllabary indigenously developed based on the Chinese characters. This book consists of sixteen chapters covering the phonology, morphology, writing system, tense and aspect systems, basic argument structure, grammatical constructions, and discourse and pragmatic phenomena of Japanese. It provides researchers with a useful typological reference and students of Japanese with a theory-neutral introduction to current linguistic research issues.

Book Prosodic Features and Prosodic Structure

Download or read book Prosodic Features and Prosodic Structure written by Anthony Fox and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002-04-19 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prosodic Features and Prosodic Structure presents an overall view of the nature of prosodic features of language - accent, stress, rhythm, tone, pitch, and intonation - and shows how these connect to sound systems and meaning. It is a work of great scholarship and learning, expressed in way that will be accessible to all linguists from advanced undergraduates to postdoctoral researchers. The last substantial overview was published over 20 years ago. Since then the subject has been transformed by linked advances in phonological and phonetic theory and accoustic technology. This book will interest phonologists, phoneticians, and researchers in related applied fields such as speech pathology and speech synthesis.

Book Handbook of Japanese Phonetics and Phonology

Download or read book Handbook of Japanese Phonetics and Phonology written by Haruo Kubozono and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first comprehensive handbook of Japanese phonetics and phonology describing the basic phonetic and phonological structures of modern Japanese with main focus on standard Tokyo Japanese. Its primary goal is to provide a comprehensive overview and descriptive generalizations of major phonetic and phonological phenomena in modern Japanese by reviewing important studies in the fields over the past century. It also presents a summary of interesting questions that remain unsolved in the literature. The volume consists of eighteen chapters in addition to an introduction to the whole volume. In addition to providing descriptive generalizations of empirical phonetic/phonological facts, this volume also aims to give an overview of major phonological theories including, but not restricted to, traditional generative phonology, lexical phonology, prosodic morphology, intonational phonology, and the more recent Optimality Theory. It also touches on theories of speech perception and production. This book serves as a comprehensive guide to Japanese phonetics and phonology for all interested in linguistics and speech sciences.

Book The Production and Perception of Japanese Pitch Accent

Download or read book The Production and Perception of Japanese Pitch Accent written by Yukiko Sugiyama and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-18 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word prosody of Tokyo Japanese is often labeled as pitch accent, and is characterized by a steep fall in F0 from the accented mora into the following unaccented mora. The description of Japanese pitch accent in earlier research was primarily based on the observation of a small set of minimal pairs that differed only by pitch accent, and its bearing on the perception of pitch accent was not clear. This book attempts to overcome these limitations by conducting production and perception experiments using a larger set of minimal pairs. It first examines whether earlier descriptions of Japanese pitch accent hold generally true in Japanese by thoroughly searching minimal pairs in an electronic database. It then conducts a perception study to examine whether acoustic differences found between the minimal pairs are used by listeners in word identification. The results show that some acoustic properties related to pitch accent were not used in auditory identification, underscoring the need to look at both production and perception in studying speech. This volume also includes a short review on the literature of Japanese pitch accent. The book is ideal for those interested in the issues related to phonetics and the perception of accent and word prosody.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Linguistics

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Linguistics written by Shigeru Miyagawa and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past twenty years or so, the work on Japanese within generative grammar has shifted from primarily using contemporary theory to describe Japanese to contributing directly to general theory, on top of producing extensive analyses of the language. The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Linguistics captures the excitement that comes from answering the question, "What can Japanese say about Universal Grammar?" Each of the eighteen chapters takes up a topic in syntax, morphology, acquisition, processing, phonology, or information structure, and, first of all, lays out the core data, followed by critical discussion of the various approaches found in the literature. Each chapter ends with a section on how the study of the particular phenomenon in Japanese contributes to our knowledge of general linguistic theory. This book will be useful to students and scholars of linguistics who are interested in the latest studies on one of the most extensively studied languages within generative grammar.
