Japanese Tattoos explains the imagery featured in Japanese tattoos so that readers can avoid getting ink they don't understand or, worse, that they'll regret. This photo-heavy book will also trace the history of Japanese tattooing, putting the iconography and kanji symbols in their proper context so readers will be better informed as to what they mean and have a deeper understanding of irezumi. Download or read book Polynesian Skateboards and Posters written by Cort Bengtson and published by Cort's Royal Ink Tattoo Company. This book was released on 2018-01-06 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decks foward It is easy to believe that the surge in popularity and social acceptance of tattooing can be directly traced to the bold magnanimous and charismatic celebrities and sports personalities of our time sporting this particular style of art generally referred to as Polynesian"or simply put "Tribal."And although some consider this surge in popularity somewhat of a new trend, it has been around for thousands of years and is probably one of the oldest forms of art there is. The art itself was defined not only by the very simple tools that were used to accomplish the act of tattooing but by the need for simplistic, bold graphic type representations that would withstand the ever changing and deteriorating epidermis. Symbols of nature and family life gives legitimate claim that tattooing was very much a way of transfering knoledge through the ages as well as ones claim to thier own personal independence, individuallity, social hierarchy and coming of age. This book is a collection of polynesian art from internationally published award winning New York Tattoo artist Cort Bengtson which can be broken into two categories. The first half of this book contains 20 different longboards and pintail skateboard decks that were hand painted with one shot enamel and cleared with a two part epoxy clear for durability and finish quality. Although tribal is usually considered of black rendering these decks explore this age old art in mostly other than black but does so consistent with the positive/negative definition normally associated with tribal polynesian art. The second is all about art on paper including marker renderings, watercolor projects and some a combination of both. Ranging in sizes up to 40"-50," they include a diverse use of patterns and shapes sure to let anyone read into it and see a story of thier own making. Some are marker right to paper, some took hours just to layout. Some of the water color explore the slightly more sublte side. Some were drawn on the spot some pieces were started one day and finished later.

Book excerpt: A gorgeous, full-scale reproduction of a rare, early 20th century book of Japanese tattoo designs. Accompanied by a lushly illustrated introductory essay detailing the book's mysterious origins and curious history. Around 1900, during the late Meiji era, an anonymous Japanese tattoo artist painted dozens of extraordinary tattoo designs on the silk pages of a small homemade book: writhing, bearded dragons; elegant geishas; eagles and snakes locked in midair combat; meticulously observed cranes on the wing; a spider in his web, awaiting prey. Within a decade, this enigmatic volume had become the prized possession of an Arkansas farmer and amateur tattooer whose travels never took him beyond the South Central states. Floating West reproduces the original book of designs in its entirety, making a singular object of tattoo history available to artists, enthusiasts, and historians worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproduces ukiyo-e prints from the incomparable collection of Japanese art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Many tattoo connoisseurs consider the Japanese tradition to be the finest in the world for its detail, complexity, and compositional skill. Its style and subject matter are drawn from the visual treasure trove of Japanese popular culture, in particular the colour woodblock prints of the early nineteenth century known as ukiyo-e. This book tells the fascinating story of how ukiyo-e first inspired tattoo artists as the pictorial tradition of tattooing in Japan was just beginning. It explores the Japanese tattoo's evolving meanings, from symbol of devotion to punishment and even to crime, and reveals the tales behind specific motifs. With lush, colourful images of flowers blooming on the arm of a thief, sea monsters coiling across the back of a hero, and legendary warriors battling on the chests of actors, the tattoos in these Japanese prints can offer the same vivid inspiration today as they did two hundred years ago.
