Download or read book Japanese in America written by Elias Manchester Boddy and published by . This book was released on 1921 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is inconceivable that fewer than 100,000 Japanese, willing to work exceedingly long hours at the hardest of tasks for economic success, could create an international problem. Yet at the present time, such a problem seems to exist. It is the belief of the author that were the average American to know the exact facts of the Japanese American situation, there would be no problem. A full understanding by the public is not at all difficult to arrive at, providing the facts and not propaganda are furnished. A certain section of the American Press has singled out the Japanese for vilification, abuse and slander, for the sole purpose of increasing its circulation by sensational methods. We find the people of California constantly harassed by Anti-Japanese Propaganda, while the rest of the nation looks on, expressing only a nominal interest, and that more in the skill with which the propagandists have plied their art, than in the subject of their discussion. The purpose of the author in the present volume is to present as concisely as possible the history of the diplomatic, industrial, and social relations between Japan and the United States, to review the actual conditions in California, and to present as fully as possible an account of the various forces and interests vitally concerned with the campaign of propaganda which has been and is now being waged. The author is indebted to McMasters' History of the People of the United States, Harper's Encyclopedia of United States History, A History of the Japanese People, by Capt. F. Brinkley (Encyclopedia Britannica); the Japanese Association of America, and Mr. K. Kanzaki."--Introduction.

Book What Makes Life Worth Living

Download or read book What Makes Life Worth Living written by Gordon Mathews and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1996-04-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an original and provocative anthropological approach to the fundamental philosophical question of what makes life worth living. Gordon Mathews considers this perennial issue by examining nine pairs of similarly situated individuals in the United States and Japan. In the course of exploring how people from these two cultures find meaning in their daily lives, he illuminates a vast and intriguing range of ideas about work and love, religion, creativity, and self-realization. Mathews explores these topics by means of the Japanese term ikigai, "that which most makes one's life seem worth living." American English has no equivalent, but ikigai applies not only to Japanese lives but to American lives as well. Ikigai is what, day after day and year after year, each of us most essentially lives for. Through the life stories of those he interviews, Mathews analyzes the ways Japanese and American lives have been affected by social roles and cultural vocabularies. As we approach the end of the century, the author's investigation into how the inhabitants of the world's two largest economic superpowers make sense of their lives brings a vital new understanding to our skeptical age.

Book excerpt: The Regional Handbooks of Economic Development series provides accessible overviews of countries within their larger domestic and international contexts, focusing on the relations among regions as they meet the challenges of the twenty first century. The series allows the non-specialist student to explore a wide range of complex factors-social and political as well as economic-that affect the growth of developing regions in Asia, Europe, and South America. Each Handbook provides an overview chapter discussing the region's economic conditions within an historical and political context, as well as 20 or more chapter-length essays written by recognized experts, which analyze the key issues affecting a region's economy: its population, natural resources, foreign trade, labor problems, and economic inequalities, and other vital factors. In addition, the volumes offer useful support materials, including a series of appendices that include a detailed chronology of events in the region, a glossary of terms, biographical entries on key personalities, an annotated bibliography of further reading, and a comprehensive analytical index.

Book Housing Markets in the United States and Japan

Download or read book Housing Markets in the United States and Japan written by Yukio Noguchi and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Japan and the United States are the world's leading economies, there are significant differences in the ways their wealth is translated into living standards. A careful comparison of housing markets illustrates not only how living standards in the two countries differ, but also reveals much about saving patterns and how they affect wealth accumulation. In this volume, ten essays discuss the evolution of housing prices, housing markets and personal savings, housing finance, commuting, and the impact of public policy on housing markets. The studies reveal surprising differences in housing investment in the two countries. For example, because down payments in Japan are much higher than in the United States, Japanese tend to delay home purchases relative to their American counterparts. In the United States, the advent of home equity credit may have reduced private saving overall. This book is the first comparison of housing markets in Japan and the United States, and its findings illuminate the effects of housing markets on productivity growth, business investment, and trade.
