Book Soviet Japanese Economic Relations

Download or read book Soviet Japanese Economic Relations written by Sumiye O. McGuire and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes the potential for increased economic relations between Japan and the Soviet Union, and the importance of such a relationship to each country, by examining both the economic and the political factors influencing trade and investment. Historically, economic relations between the two countries have been limited. Chances for improvement seem to depend on Japan's willingness to invest in the development of resources in Siberia and the Soviet Far East, which in turn hinges on the resolution of long-standing territorial disputes. Perhaps of more immediate value would be Japan's ability to help the Soviet Union respond to demands for consumer goods and improve manufacturing efficiency and quality control. Obstacles in these areas include the Soviet Union's difficulties in paying for Japanese goods and technology and constraints resulting from Japan's acceptance of U.S. leadership in mandating East-West trade. The author concludes that improved economic relations between the Soviet Union and Japan are most likely to be realized gradually on a long-term basis.

Book excerpt: This paper assesses the current state of Soviet-Japanese political and economic relations. The impact of Mikhail Gorbachev's new public diplomacy is a key factor to be considered when estimating the likelihood of improved future relations. The Soviets are most interested in expanding economic ventures with Japan, but the controversy over the Northern Territories is a serious impediment to these interests. Finally, the issue of Soviet-Japanese relations is placed into a broader context by examining the role that China plays, both in its own relations with Japan and in terms of the triangular USSR-Japan-China relationship.

Book The Soviet Union and the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book The Soviet Union and the Asia Pacific Region written by Pushpa Thambipillai and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1989-06-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In examining the economic and social reforms of Gorbachev's Soviet Union, the contributors to this new study provide a broad portrait of the state of current soviet relations with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, the prospects for change, and the perceived role of the Soviet Union in that change. Leading established scholars and specialists from the countries of the Asia-Pacific region study this new Soviet phenomenon and evince a mixture of enthusiasm and apprehension about Moscow's new policy overtures to the region. Mikhail Gorbachev's speech in the Soviet Far East city of Vladivostok on July 28, 1986, was widely read and commented upon throughout East and Southeast Asia, and raised many unanswered questions: How much has the Soviet Union really changed? Will China, the principal target of Soviet overtures, respond positively and, if so, what will the implications be for the rest of the region? What do these sweeping changes mean for the region in practical terms? The Soviet Union and the Asia-Pacific Region considers these questions and offers insight and provocative commentary on the current attitudes of the many Asia-Pacific countries toward the Soviet Union.

Book Japan s Response to the Gorbachev Era 1985 1991

Download or read book Japan s Response to the Gorbachev Era 1985 1991 written by Gilbert Rozman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gorbachev's transformation of both Soviet socialism and the Cold War world atmosphere kindled a far-reaching debate in Japan. Would Japan at last free itself of its secondary postwar standing? Would a new Soviet system and world order soon be established? Gilbert Rozman argues in Japan's Response to the Gorbachev Era, that Japanese perceptions of the Soviet Union are distinctive and are helpful for understanding what will become an influential worldview. Focusing on diverse opinion leaders and the relationship between the Japanese media, policy-making, and public opinion, Rozman shows how long-standing negative images of Soviet socialism and militarism have been reconsidered since the mid-1980s. His analysis treats burning issues such as the Northern Territories dispute, the Soviet commitment to reform, and the Soviet-American relationship. It also sheds light on Japanese views of Soviet history, modernization, and national character. Such views reveal some of the building blocks for the emergent Japanese worldview.
