Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japanese Names and How to Read Them: A Manual for Art-Collectors and Students, Being a Concise and Comprehensive Guide to the Reading and Interpretation of Japanese Proper Names Both Geographical and Personal, as Well as of Dates and Other Formal Expressions Japanese names may therefore justly claim to be a pioneer work. Its most prominent feature is inevitably a Dictionary of the Chinese Characters used in writing Proper Names, accompanied bv their various Readings and a sufficiency of actual Examples to illustrate their use in this connection, singly or in combination. For the especial benefit of the collector, this Section of the work - as well as much of the preliminary matter to which further reference will be made - has been extended to cover the interpretation of Dates and other items of conventional phrase ology, which occur with such frequency on Japanese works of art. Those who are inclined to fight shy of dictionaries may be reminded that the only conceivable alternative, to keep pace with even the collector's more limited requirements, lies in a well-nigh illimitable series of facsimiles or transcripts of actual signatures, etc., a series which, apart from its unwieldy bulk and prohibitive cost, would be. Incapable of any intelligible arrangement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Remembering the Kanji 2

Download or read book Remembering the Kanji 2 written by James W. Heisig and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the first volume of Remembering the Kanji, the present work provides students with helpful tools for learning the pronunciation of the kanji. Behind the notorious inconsistencies in the way the Japanese language has come to pronounce the characters it received from China lie several coherent patterns. Identifying these patterns and arranging them in logical order can reduce dramatically the amount of time spent in the brute memorization of sounds unrelated to written forms. Many of the “primitive elements,” or building blocks, used in the drawing of the characters also serve to indicate the “Chinese reading” that particular kanji use, chiefly in compound terms. By learning one of the kanji that uses such a “signal primitive,” one can learn the entire group at the same time. In this way, Remembering the Kanji 2 lays out the varieties of phonetic pattern and offers helpful hints for learning readings, that might otherwise appear completely random, in an efficient and rational way. Individual frames cross-reference the kanji to alternate readings and to the frame in volume 1 in which the meaning and writing of the kanji was first introduced. A parallel system of pronouncing the kanji, their “Japanese readings,” uses native Japanese words assigned to particular Chinese characters. Although these are more easily learned because of the association of the meaning to a single word, the author creates a kind of phonetic alphabet of single syllable words, each connected to a simple Japanese word, and shows how they can be combined to help memorize particularly troublesome vocabulary. The 4th edition has been updated to include the 196 new kanji approved by the government in 2010 as “general-use” kanji.

Book Japanese Names

Download or read book Japanese Names written by Clay Boutwell and published by Kotoba Inc. This book was released on 2023-04-12 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Want to make Japanese friends? Having a thorough understanding of names will help. Want to enjoy Japanese movies, TV, or novels? If this fits your description, this book is for you. FEATURES * Learn the most common 100 family names today * Over a hundred given names (male and female) * Master the most common kanji and the most common readings found in Japanese names * Download Anki decks, sound files, and worksheets for no extra charge. Dedicating time to learning names might not seem as "cool" or enjoyable as mastering slang or Japanese proverbs, but a strong foundation in Japanese names will significantly enhance your understanding. Japanese dramas and novels often introduce names without any consideration (or mercy!) for language learners, which can be frustrating. If you can't comprehend character names, it can dampen your enjoyment and leave you feeling lost, even if you understand most of the dialogue. Surprisingly, not many textbooks or courses devote substantial attention to names, despite being a crucial aspect of achieving true linguistic and cultural fluency. This book aims to change that once and for all by thoroughly studying the top 100 family and over a hundred given names (male and female) through kanji studies, worksheets, and Anki flashcard decks (see the last page for the download link).

Book Japan s Name Culture

Download or read book Japan s Name Culture written by Herbert E. Plutschow and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study in English of Japanese names - their history and evolution, and ontological implications. Its main purpose is to understand the development of the nomenclature in its religious (animistic) and socio-political contexts. We learn, for example, how belief in the animistic-symbolic property of names developed into extensive taboos and, in connection with these taboos, into the custom of revealing names in case of marriage or territorial surrender. Whereas private (religious) use of surnames was tolerated, commoners without public functions were prohibited from public use of surnames. In the Meiji period (1868-1912), on the other hand, the government enforced the universal registry of surnames to conform with its policy of universal conscription, education, taxation and the postal service. The book will be of particular interest to students of Japan and Japanese nomenclature. It will also appeal to the general reader drawn to learning more about Japan by looking at its history, religion and culture through the names of its people.

Book excerpt: Of all the great Japanese novelists, Kobe Abe was indubitably the most versatile. With The Ruined Map, he crafted a mesmerizing literary crime novel that combines the narrative suspense of Chandler with the psychological depth of Dostoevsky. Mr. Nemuro, a respected salesman, disappeared over half a year ago, but only now does his alluring yet alcoholic wife hire a private eye. The nameless detective has but two clues: a photo and a matchbook. With these he embarks upon an ever more puzzling pursuit that leads him into the depths of Tokyo's dangerous underworld, where he begins to lose the boundaries of his own identity. Surreal, fast-paced, and hauntingly dreamlike, Abe’s masterly novel delves into the unknowable mysteries of the human mind. Translated from the Japanese by E. Dale Saunders.
