Book Night in the American Village

Download or read book Night in the American Village written by Akemi Johnson and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A lively encounter with identity and American military history in Okinawa. Night in the American Village is by turns intellectual, hip, and sexy. I admire it for its ferocity, style, and vigor. A wonderful book." —Anthony Swofford, author of Jarhead A beautifully written examination of the complex relationship between the women living near the U.S. bases in Okinawa and the servicemen who are stationed there At the southern end of the Japanese archipelago lies Okinawa, host to a vast complex of U.S. military bases. A legacy of World War II, these bases have been a fraught issue in Japan for decades—with tensions exacerbated by the often volatile relationship between islanders and the military, especially after the brutal rape of a twelve-year-old girl by three servicemen in the 1990s. But the situation is more complex than it seems. In Night in the American Village, journalist Akemi Johnson takes readers deep into the "border towns" surrounding the bases—a world where cultural and political fault lines compel individuals, both Japanese and American, to continually renegotiate their own identities. Focusing on the women there, she follows the complex fallout of the murder of an Okinawan woman by an ex–U.S. serviceman in 2016 and speaks to protesters, to women who date and marry American men and groups that help them when problems arise, and to Okinawans whose family members survived World War II. Thought-provoking and timely, Night in the American Village is a vivid look at the enduring wounds of U.S.-Japanese history and the cultural and sexual politics of the American military empire.

Book Handbook on Japanese Military Forces

Download or read book Handbook on Japanese Military Forces written by U.S. War Department and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1995-08 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1944 the U.S. Army published this manual for its officers in the Pacific Theater an expanded version of the original 1942 manual of the same name—and ever since, it has been the best single reference source on the wartime Japanese military available in the English language. By 1944, the army had had time to assess its enemy closely and was coming to understand him, and its vast knowledge was distilled into the handbook. The handbook details the Japanese military system, field organization, tactics, and weapons and equipment, and the strengths and weaknesses that resulted from them. Extensively illustrated, it contains sections on the Japanese special forces, the military police, uniforms and insignia, and conventional signs and abbreviations. It covers, besides the army, the Japanese Air Service, with emphasis on its tactics and organization. Issued to officers for briefings and periodically updated, the handbook’s purpose was to assist in the winning of the war, and thus it strove to be absolutely reliable for its users in combat. It was compiled by a team of officers who integrated the research of others, and it contains information provided by the U.S. Marines and also by British and Australian intelligence. Packed with information, it is a major primary source that military historians and World War II buffs will find fascinating.

Book Transnational Identities on Okinawa s Military Bases

Download or read book Transnational Identities on Okinawa s Military Bases written by Johanna O. Zulueta and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-27 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the role of civilian workers on U.S. bases in Okinawa, Japan and how transnational movements within East Asia during the Occupation period brought foreign workers, mostly from the Philippines, to work on these bases. Decades later, in a seeming “reproduction of base labour”, returnees of both Okinawan and Philippine heritage began occupying jobs on base as United States of Japan (USFJ) employees. The book investigates the role that ethnicity, nationality, and capital play in the lives of these base employees, and at the same time examines how Japanese and Okinawan identity/ies are formed and challenged. It offers a valuable resource for those interested in Japan and Okinawa, U.S. military basing, migration, and mixed ethnicities.

Book Japanese Fortifications and Other Military Structures in the Central Pacific

Download or read book Japanese Fortifications and Other Military Structures in the Central Pacific written by D. Colt Denfeld and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report was designed to provide for the identification of World War II Japanese fortifications and structures that might be encountered in the Central Pacific area, together with a discussion of the history of the development of Japanese ferro-concrete fortifications and defensive strategy in the Pacific. Plans, evaluations, descriptions and illustrations are provided to aid the reader in the interpretation of remains that may be encountered. The descriptions presented in this study are based upon field surveys conducted in the Central Pacific area and upon data gleaned from archival materials. Emphasis is placed on fortitications and structures that have the greatest likelihood of being located today. A wide range of fortifications and structures are discussed and described. They include individual emplacements, gun positions, caves, ferro-concrete structures and shelters. Brief comments with respect to preservation complete the manuscript. It is noted in this final chapter that Micronesia is unique in its collection of World War II relics; the potential for exemplary preservation projects is enormous" (ix).

Book The Walk My Journey of Survival of the Japanese Military Occupation of Manila

This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was invited by the Bataan Historical Society to be part of a panel asked to present our life experiences during WWII in the Philippines. I came to a realization that I always found it difficult to write about the war. From the time we were liberated in 1945 from the clutches of the Japanese Military, I would jot down notes about incidents I recalled. The thoughts in these notes were usually without beginnings or endings. Then I would get rid of them, not knowing why. They seemed important at the time. When I was teaching Tagalog at Berkeley, I found myself rewriting those "beginnings" in the Tagalog language. I was surprised to find myself producing streams of thoughts that had coherent beginnings and endings. All of them were about the war. I realized that the Filipino side of me was the active speaker. I am half Anglo-American and half Filipina. What did the Filipina side have that made her able to speak? I have decided it is time to write about that of which I had not been aware.
