Book Learning by Doing in Markets Firms and Countries

Download or read book Learning by Doing in Markets Firms and Countries written by Naomi R. Lamoreaux and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning by Doing in Markets, Firms, and Countries draws out the underlying economics in business history by focusing on learning processes and the development of competitively valuable asymmetries. The essays show that organizations, like people, learn that this process can be organized more or less effectively, which can have major implications for how competition works. The first three essays in this volume explore techniques firms have used to both manage information to create valuable asymmetries and to otherwise suppress unwelcome competition. The next three focus on the ways in which firms have built special capabilities over time, capabilities that have been both sources of competitive advantage and resistance to new opportunities. The last two extend the notion of learning from the level of firms to that of nations. The collection as a whole builds on the previous two volumes to make the connection between information structure and product market outcomes in business history.

Book Firms Markets and Contracts

Download or read book Firms Markets and Contracts written by Ekkehart Schlicht and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern institutional economics witnesses a merging of formal and informal strands of theorizing. This development has offered new and vigorous perspectives which avoid both arbitrariness and theoretical sterility. The essays on contract theory gathered here exemplify this development. They propone new results on central issues in contractual theorizing. The theory of the firm in its variegated aspects forms, naturally, the core of the present set of contributions. Issues of ownership, integration, delegation, and finan ce are analyzed. Some contributions use the theoretical approach of contract theory to explore other issues, like medical care, public good problems, the economics of crime, environmental economics, and international trade. The contributors are leading young economists. They have participated in one or se veral classes of the 'International Summer School on the New Institutional Economics' which has been organized by Rudolf Richter in the years 1988 through 1994 and is now continued by Urs Schweizer. The theoretical style of these contributions has been influ enced by this experience. This collection of essays is intended to express the thanks of the contributors to Rudolf Richter. His initiatives for scholarly instruction and for inter national exchange of ideas have helped to create and to diffuse the understanding of and the engagement for the new institutional economics in Europe.

Book The Economic Development of Modern Japan 1945 1995

Download or read book The Economic Development of Modern Japan 1945 1995 written by Steven Tolliday and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprints of 46 articles are organized in two hefty volumes around the themes of trends in economic development, the industrial policy debate, Keiretsu and corporate groups, small business and subcontracting, the development of Japanese management, industrial strategy, money and banking, labor, land and agriculture, education and human capital, and gender and society. Toward the aim of building on previous collections rather than duplicating them, editor Tolliday (economic and social history, U. of Leeds, UK ) has done several things: chosen articles that provide empirical, rather than theoretical analysis; concentrated on journal articles that are not widely accessible (including English-language work by Japanese scholars); shied away from reprinting "classic" texts that are readily available elsewhere; and organized the collection around specific themes, each with a guide to further reading. Indexing is by name only (not subject). Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Japan s Computer and Communications Industry

Download or read book Japan s Computer and Communications Industry written by Martin Fransman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers, telecommunications equipment, semiconductors - the products and technologies of the information and communications (IC) industry have transformed our world. Most of these products were initially developed in Western countries, but by the early 1990s some of the world's largestcompanies in the field were Japanese. This book explains the resurgence of Japan's IC giants, their global status, and their strengths and weaknesses. Empirical scrutiny of their evolution is the author's own theory of the most appropriate method for studying the dynamics of long-term industrialchange. While the Japanese motor vehicle and consumer electronics industries have been relatively well analysed, there are no comprehensive up-to-date studies of the Japanese IC industry. This book addresses the questions consequently left unanswered: How were Japanese IC companies able tocatch up with their western rivals--and in some cases overtake them? How have Japanese IC companies responded to the post-IBM world of computing? Why do they remain primarily dependent on the Japanese market? Why do they combine competences in computers, semiconductors, and telecommunicationsequipment, while their US counterparts are far more specialized? What role has been played by the Japanese government and the system of controlled competition in their success? Will Japanese IC companies become increasingly competitive internationally in the future? The author extends theevolutionary approach to the organization of the firm and industry developed by such writers as Schumpeter, Nelson, Winter, and Chandler. He argues that in order to understand the evolution of companies and industries, it is necessary to create a theory of the firm capable of encompassing thedevelopment of real firms in the real world in real time. This approach stresses the importance of the beliefs that are constructed in the firm under conditions of 'interpretive ambiguity', which guide the firm's decisions and its reactions to new technologies. Lengthy analyses of NEC and NTT (byfar the world's largest company in terms of market value; its future currently under government scrutiny), and of the computing, switiching, and optical fibre industries, illustrate these concepts. Based on over 600 personal interviews over eight years with Japanese leaders, this book providesimportant new material on the past, present, and future of Japanese industry.
