Book Japanese Corporate Finance and International Competition

Download or read book Japanese Corporate Finance and International Competition written by Masasuke Ide and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1998 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this book is to demonstrate that the relationship is based financial system was the hidden key factor to explain Japan's phenomenal economic growth after WWII by providing low cost of capital to major Japanese companies as a powerful edge in the export market. The book compares and contrasts the Japanese financial system in detail to that of the US and emphasizes the importance of relationship driven share ownership structure and the stock market behavior which valued highly the low profitability of Japanese management. Through the international comparison of corporate profitability and cost of capital, the book develops a theoretical framework which shows how the financial system affects directly and indirectly international economic competition and the macroeconomic performance of nations. Then the book critically reassesses the traditional Japanese approach to economic value creation as a catch-up model, including the analysis of current major economic difficulties facing Japan.

Book Corporate Financing and Governance in Japan

Download or read book Corporate Financing and Governance in Japan written by Takeo Hoshi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-01-31 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Takeo Hoshi and Anil Kashyap examine the history of the Japanese financial system, from its nineteenth-century beginnings through the collapse of the 1990s that concluded with sweeping reforms. Combining financial theory with new data and original case studies, they show why the Japanese financial system developed as it did and how its history affects its ongoing evolution. The authors describe four major periods within Japan's financial history and speculate on the fifth, into which Japan is now moving. Throughout, they focus on four questions: How do households hold their savings? How is business financing provided? What range of services do banks provide? And what is the nature and extent of bank involvement in the management of firms? The answers provide a framework for analyzing the history of the past 150 years, as well as implications of the just-completed reforms known as the "Japanese Big Bang." Hoshi and Kashyap show that the largely successful era of bank dominance in postwar Japan is over, largely because deregulation has exposed the banks to competition from capital markets and foreign competitors. The banks are destined to shrink as households change their savings patterns and their customers continue to migrate to new funding sources. Securities markets are set to re-emerge as central to corporate finance and governance.

The remaining chapters describe different systems, assessing to what extent the Japanese system can serve as a model for developing market economies and transforming socialist economies. The basic characteristics of the main bank system are examined here, its roots, development, and its role in the heyday of its rapid growth. The volume looks at how the system has performed and at its strengths and weaknesses. It goes on to look at how the system has changed and what its approprate role is as deregulation, liberalization, and internationalization of Japan's financial markets have proceeded over the past two decades and a new issue securities market has emerged. A basic conclusion of the book is that banking-based systems are in most cases the most appropriate for industrial financing until a rather late stage of a country's economic and financial development. It aims to identify the conditions under which banks are better able that securites market institutions to evaluate the credit worthiness of borrowers and the viability of new projects, to monitor the ongoing performance of firms, and to rescue or liquidate firms in distress. Book Competition Innovation and Growth in Japan

Download or read book Competition Innovation and Growth in Japan written by Yuji Honjo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses three important concepts in the economy—competition, innovation, and growth—using various cases and available data in Japan and other countries. First, the authors discuss competition, including global competition, to provide a better understanding of competition policy in Japan. Then, the authors examine the effects of human capital and alliance on innovation while providing new innovation indicators. Moreover, the authors examine growth from the perspective of corporate strategy such as acquisition, including international comparison. The interplay of competition, innovation, and growth has been prevalent in Japan, and it still acts as a catalyst for stimulating the stagnant economy. A better understanding of competition, innovation, and growth provides the tools to reinvigorate the stagnant economy in Japan and to reinforce the economy in other countries where the period of rapid growth has ended.

Book Japanese Exports and Foreign Direct Investment

Download or read book Japanese Exports and Foreign Direct Investment written by Hideki Yamawaki and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an addition to the economics, finance, and business literatures about market competition as it takes place in international manufacturing industries. Much is known about how large firms compete in domestic economies and about how broadly competitive processes determine international trade. The intersection between these two areas is missing, however. Little is known about how oligopolists interact with each other across international boundaries. This book presents a series of empirical analysis to address this issue by using various data on exports and foreign direct investments by Japanese firms and industries from the late 1950s through the early 2000s. The book thus shows the competitive processes that Japanese firms engage in international markets.

Book Growth through Competition Competition through Growth

Download or read book Growth through Competition Competition through Growth written by Hiroyuki Odagiri and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1992-01-23 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines two central aspects of Japanese management - growth pursuit by internal investment (as opposed to acquisition), and intensive competition within and between Japanese firms. It also looks at how Japanese firms maintain efficiency and flexibility under the apparently rigid system of 'lifetime' employment. The author begins by enquiring in to the financial and human aspects of the firm with a particular emphasis placed on the human side. T he motivation, behaviour, and organization of Japanese management are discussed and the consequences of Japan's management system on its industrial organization and macroeconomy are examined. Throughout the book, it is emphasized that competition is at the heart of the Japanese economy and management to the same, if not to a greater degreee than in the West. This competition is enhanced by the growth preference of Japanese management, and competition in turn makes growth feasible.

Book The Japanese Business and Economic System

Their conclusions combine to present a view of the path Japan should take to restore its economy to optimal growth in the 21st century, and show how this path will affect global markets.

Book International Competitiveness in Financial Services

Download or read book International Competitiveness in Financial Services written by Marvin H. Kosters and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: financial markets suggests that factors such as differences in capital requirements, limi tations on size or on the range of financial activities in which firms can engage, govern ment guarantee arrangements for deposits or payments, and reporting or disclosure requirements can have important effects on the efficiency of industrial and commercial firms and thus on the international competitive positions of major sectors of the U.S. economy. Regulatory and tax policies must therefore take into account effects on inter national competitive positions in addition to domestic concerns. The articles in this issue analyze differences in market organization and regulation across countries and examine how efficiency in producing financial services is influenced by these differences. These articles were presented and discussed at a conference sponsored by the Amer ican Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C., on May 31 and June 1, 1990. This confer ence on International Competitiveness in Financial Services brought to the attention of Washington policy officials these analyses by leading scholars in finance. Publication of these studies and critiques in the Journal of Financial Services Research is intended to stimulate further interest in research on these important issues.
