Book excerpt: The ultimate research tool for the study of Japanese prints, this publication represents eight years of research by the author William Green. It lists over 6000 publications dating from 1822 to 1993, concentrating on those in English. In addition, the inclusion of newspaper and periodical reviews of the most important books and catalogs enables the academic debate concerning Japanese prints to be followed. This book is divided along thematic lines into 15 chapters and also contains three indexes, making it an easy-to-use reference work for students, scholars and collectors alike.

Book Rare and Valuable Japanese Color Prints from Three Different Collections

Download or read book Rare and Valuable Japanese Color Prints from Three Different Collections written by Anderson Galleries and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rare and Valuable Japanese Color Prints From Three Different Collections: Rare and Beautiful Examples of the Primitives, Excellent Examples of Harunobu, Koriusai, Kiyonaga, and Utamaro, Including Fine Triptychs, an Unusually Important Series of Landscapes by Hokusai and Hiroshige A series of about thirty Chinese color prints may, however, deserve a word of comment. We have all seen Chinese color prints that are in reality hasty reprints of the chieh-tse-yuan hua-chuan or Treatise on Painting from the Mustard Seed Garden, printed in Japan towards 1812, or printed in China about 1890 and 1906. Color and lines of these worthless reprints are equally lacking in character, and give no more idea of the charm and quality of the old prints than an oleograph sold in the country fair gives an idea of the Sistine Madonna. The early Chinese color prints have never been offered in this country and have escaped everybody's vigilance. Only Mr. Langdon Warner, in Philadelphia, treasures an early edition of another Chinese book With color prints, the shi-chu-chai-shu Hua or Register of the Ten Bamboo Hall in Word and Picture and the Far Eastern department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art possesses several of the early prints and also a stone printing slab Which, in my opinion, has been used for color printing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japanese Color Prints: The Important Collection of Mrs. Adolphe Borie of New York Including Complete Sets in the First States of the Rare Hiroshige Series of the Kisikaido, the Tokaido and the Marusei Tokaido Prints with a pedigree are valuable additions to a collection when they can be used as standards of comparison. The dispersal of such a collection is an event that can no longer be looked on with certainty, in view of the rapid disappearance of these fine early impressions. An endeavor has been made to make the catalogue of permanent value by giving the accepted points which determine, as far as possible, the various states of the prints. These points have not been given the attention they deserve, but the extraordinary value of these impressions will be appreciated on comparing their early soft yet brilliant coloring, and their fine registration; with the late and careless p'rin-tings which serve only to belie designs in which the delicately printed impressions in the Borie collection are of the most surpassing beauty. Book Japanese Colour Prints Classic Reprint

Download or read book Japanese Colour Prints Classic Reprint written by Laurence Binyon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japanese Colour Prints The body of the work is prefaced by tables to facilitate the reading of dated books and prints; an account of the Censorship of Prints a table of the Mon of the Yedo actors during the 18th century; and a table of publishers' trade-marks and seals. These will, it is believed, be of service to collectors, since the information hitherto published on these matters has been meagre and often inaccurate. At the end of the book will be found brief essays on some outstanding problems, and a select list of important books printed in colour. Otherwise we have not concerned ourselves with the books, or with the paintings, by Ukiyoye masters, except when this was necessary to elucidate the text. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of Ukiyo-Ye: The School of the Japanese Colour-Print Artists Tosa has been characterized as the manifestation of ardent faith, through the purity of an ethereal style. Tosa represented the taste of the court of Kyoto, and was relegated to the service of the aristocracy; it reflected the esoteric mystery of Shinto and the hal lowed entourage of the divinely descended Mikado. The ceremonial of the court, its fetes and religious solemnities, - dances attended by daimios, in robes of state falling in full harmonious folds, - were depicted with consummate elegance and delicacy of touch, which betrayed familiarity with the occult methods of Persian miniature painting; The Tosa artists used very fine, pointed brushes, and set off the brilliance of their colouring with resplendent backgrounds in gold leaf and it is to Tosa we owe the intricate designs, almost microscopic in detail, which are to be seen upon the most beautiful specimens of gold lacquer work; and screens, which for richness have never been surpassed.
