Book Japanese Woodblock Printing

Download or read book Japanese Woodblock Printing written by Rebecca Salter and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2002-02-28 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the sophisticated traditional arts and crafts of Japan, woodblock prints are probably the most widely known in the West. The bold yet refined compositions are as fresh to the Western eye today as they were when they first came to the attention of the Impressionists in the nineteenth century. With their fluid lines, intricate carving and delicate colors, Japanese prints are still as fascinating as ever. In this book, Rebecca Salter takes us through the history of the Japanese woodblock, discusses the materials, tools, and papers available (and their Western equivalents) and shows how to get the most out of them through interesting step-by-step projects. The work of an international group of artists shows the varied and exciting prints being produced today.

Book Ukiyo e

  • Author : Frederick Harris
  • Publisher : Tuttle Publishing
  • Release : 2012-05-29
  • ISBN : 1462906141
  • Pages : 195 pages

Download or read book Ukiyo e written by Frederick Harris and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-29 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art of Japanese woodblock printing, known as ukiyo-e ("pictures of the floating world"), reflects the rich history and way of life in Japan hundreds of years ago. Ukiyo-e: The Art of the Japanese Print takes a thematic approach to this iconic Japanese art form, considering prints by subject matter: geisha and courtesans, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, erotica, nature, historical subjects and even images of foreigners in Japan. An artist himself, author Frederick Harris--a well-known American collector who lived in Japan for 50 years--pays special attention to the methods and materials employed in Japanese printmaking. The book traces the evolution of ukiyo-e from its origins in metropolitan Edo (Tokyo) art culture as black and white illustrations, to delicate two-color prints and multicolored designs. Advice to admirers on how to collect, care for, view and buy Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints rounds out this book of charming, carefully selected prints.

Download or read book Studies of Japanese Prints written by Jane Yuan and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-12-22 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to be a calming and creative outlet for those who like to color. This book is aimed for people of all ages who like to color. The subject are Japanese prints, but there are also coloring pages of Japanese objects and images of Korean and Chinese princesses—these are ones I have made myself. In a way, this book could informally be called Japanese Prints (Princes) and Chinese and Korean Princesses. I am aesthetically drawn to Japanese prints and have been trying to recreate them for years. As a start, I copy existing Japanese prints to get a feel of how the face is structured, how the kimonos flow, and how hairstyles are articulated. Going through this process, I get more and more sense of how Japanese prints are drawn and created. Following this, I have been able to create several Japanese prints of my own—sometimes using some reference materials as aid and sometimes even drawing them from the top of my head.
