Takakura's life spanned a critical period in developing Japan, a new member of the "modern family of nations." At the age of 21, through the preaching of the immensely influential church leader Uemura Masahisa, Takakura converted to the Christian faith. He later spent over two years in the West, reading extensively in British and German theology. Takakura thus faced the challenge of absorbing numerous lines of influence and re-articulating the Christian faith within his own generation's distinctly Japanese linguistic and religio-cultural context. His personal religious experience was a microcosm of the universalization of Christian theology during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Despite having played important leadership roles within the Protestant Church in Japan during the 1920s and early 1930s, Takakura's name is scarcely known outside limited Japanese theological circles. This study lends recognition to his influential role in the Christian Church. It also utilizes Takakura's example to provide further insight into the universalizing trend in Christian thought that continues even today.

In challenging earlier, simplified ideas of Japanese political leadership, H. D. P. Envall argues that Japans leaders, from early Cold War figures such as Yoshida Shigeru to the charismatic and innovative Koizumi Junichir? to the present leadership of Abe Shinz?, have pursued leadership strategies of varying coherence and rationality, often independent of their political environment. He also finds that different Japanese leaders have shaped Japanese diplomacy in some important and underappreciated ways. In certain environments, individual difference has played a significant role in determining Japans diplomacy, both in terms of the countrys strategic identity and summit diplomacy. What emerges from Japanese Diplomacy, therefore, is a more nuanced overall picture of Japanese leadership in foreign affairs.

The book on the one hand contrasts general traits of Eastern, Buddhist thought and Western, Greek thought. The Japanese Inagaki had researched Western science and philosophy, then written in Japanese comparative studies of Japanese thought. The North American Jennings had researched Japanese theology. They brought these backgrounds together, dialoguing with each other until the present study emerged. Several creative Japanese thinkers, as well as important Westerners, are taken up. The study follows the lead of many Eastern impulses, but it also critically utilizes Western methods. Contemporary thinking on religious plurality is carefully examined. This new study is a must for those interested in philosophy and theology in general, and East-West interaction in particular.
