Book Claims to Territory Between Japan and Korea in International Law

Download or read book Claims to Territory Between Japan and Korea in International Law written by Pilkyu Kim and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period following World War II has witnessed numerous international territorial disputes, particularly in Asia and Africa. Even as we enter the twenty-first century, a large number of these territorial disputes over sovereignty remain unresolved and continue to pose significant diplomatic barriers for the parties involved. Clive Schofield, the author of Global Boundaries, identified10 disputed island hot spots around the globe, including the Falkland Islands, Dokdo (Takeshima), Diaoyu (Senkaku), and the Kurile and Spratly Islands, among others. Turning our attention to Northeast Asia, one territorial dispute of historic significance concerns a set of small rocky islets known as Dokdo in Korean or Takeshima in Japanese. Upon closer examination, these small islets represent more than just a dispute over territorial boundaries, but a historic source of tension and sensitivity that can be traced back to the period of Japanese imperialist aggression in Korea during the first half of the twentieth century. Today, this controversial territorial dispute remains as a critical obstacle to the amicable relations between Korea and Japan. Much of the problem appears to stem from the inability of both countries to reach a consensus on two interconnected issues: historical misperceptions and divergent legal interpretations over territorial claims to sovereignty. Bearing these two issues in mind, this book seeks to offer a fresh examination of the major historical and legal arguments at both sides of the Dokdo conflict from the perspective of international law. Through this approach, it is hoped this book will not only contribute to a better understanding of the facts and truth behind the Dokdo dispute, but also generate further discussion on how Korea and Japan might advance a productive dialog to achieve a meaningful resolution to this longstanding problem.

Book Black Star Over Japan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Albert Axelbank
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2010-11-01
  • ISBN : 1136928057
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Black Star Over Japan written by Albert Axelbank and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese are the only people in the world who have experienced the horror of nuclear weapons with their own flesh. Atomic holocaust was followed by American occupation and the American-inspired, postwar Japanese ‘Peace Constitution’ which explicitly outlawed Japanese military forces and the use of war as an instrument of state policy. At the time of original publication the author argued that contemporary forces within Japan were combining to create a strong movement for revision of the constitution and for the acquisition of nuclear weapons by renewed and powerful military establishment. The American government, which had encouraged rearmament, was beginning to wonder about the world effect of an economically powerful rearmed Japan and was weighing the consequences of considering Japan its only major ally in East Asia. Albert Axelbank suggests that shifting international politics and the conservative momentum in Japan make revision of the constitution and the development of Japanese militarism and nuclear weapons almost inevitable.

Book U S Navy Codebreakers Linguists and Intelligence Officers against Japan 1910 1941

Download or read book U S Navy Codebreakers Linguists and Intelligence Officers against Japan 1910 1941 written by Steven E. Maffeo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique reference presents 59 biographies of people who were key to the sea services being reasonably prepared to fight the Japanese Empire when the Second World War broke out, and whose advanced work proved crucial. These intelligence pioneers invented techniques, procedures, and equipment from scratch, not only allowing the United States to hold its own in the Pacific despite the loss of most of its Fleet at Pearl Harbor, but also laying the foundation of today’s intelligence methods and agencies. One-hundred years ago, in what was clearly an unsophisticated pre-information era, naval intelligence (and foreign intelligence in general) existed in rudimentary forms almost incomprehensible to us today. Founded in 1882, the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI)—the modern world’s “oldest continuously operating intelligence agency”—functioned for at least its first forty years with low manning, small budgets, low priority, and no prestige. The navy’s early steps into communications intelligence (COMINT), which included activities such as radio interception, radio traffic analysis, and cryptology, came with the 1916 establishment of the Code and Signals Section within the navy’s Division of Communications and with the 1924 creation of the “Research Desk” as part of the Section. Like ONI, this COMINT organization suffered from low budgets, manning, priority, and prestige. The dictionary focuses on these pioneers, many of whom went on, even after World War II, to important positions in the Navy, the State Department, the Armed Forces Security Agency, the National Security Agency, and the Central Intelligence Agency. It reveals the work and innovations of well and lesser-known individuals who created the foundations of today’s intelligence apparatus and analysis.
