Book Competing for Integration

Download or read book Competing for Integration written by Kurt W. Radtke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study demonstrates why the global economy and global policies can only be understood by assigning equal importance to actors from different continents and international institutions. The contributors begin by examining the effects of reducing trade barriers through the WTO processes, and the implications for our understanding of market forces, the diminishing capacity of governments, consumer power, and the role of international agreements. They provide fascinating details on how the European Union and Japan develop their own strategies toward emerging Asian and Latin American states, quite separately from the United States. The focus then shifts toward integration processes in Latin America. The book concludes by attempting to make sense of the political principles underlying the complex economic policies of the main actors in today's global economy, focusing on development strategies offered by the World Bank.

Book Japan and the European Union

Download or read book Japan and the European Union written by Atsuko Abe and published by Athlone Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking answers to a number of questions about the effect of Japan's international relations on its internal affairs, Abe (U. of Tsukuba, Japan), focuses on how international issues, and Japan's growing relationship with the European Union, have come to penetrate the political economy and decision-making structure in Japanese industry and legislation. He explains how the country and the union were pretty much indifferent to each other until 20 years ago in terms of both trade and politics, and how contacts have accelerated over the past decade because of changes within each and in the international matrix they both deal in. The study is based on an doctoral dissertation for Cambridge University. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book EU Japan Free Trade Agreement Within Reach

Download or read book EU Japan Free Trade Agreement Within Reach written by Krisztina Binder and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Negotiations on an EU-Japan free trade agreement (FTA) were officially launched in March 2013. Following 18 rounds of negotiations and a number of meetings at the technical and political levels, a political agreement in principle was reached during the 24th EU-Japan Summit in Brussels, on 6 July 2017. Negotiations on the outstanding issues that were left on the table will continue, with the aim of finalising the text of the agreement by the end of 2017. The deal with Japan, the EU's second largest trading partner in Asia, will enhance trade and investment relationships between the two parties. European companies, in the agri-food sector for instance, will benefit from improved access to the Japanese market, mainly through the reduction both of tariffs on specific goods as well as existing regulatory and non-tariff barriers. The 2016 trade sustainability impact assessment for the EU-Japan FTA indicated that the EU-Japan FTA and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement, involving the EU and the USA, would result in similar levels of economic gains for Europe. According to recent Commission estimates, European companies will save up to €1 billion in customs duties per year as a result of the EU-Japan FTA. Moreover, the value of EU goods and services exports could rise by up to €20 billion. This briefing is an update of an earlier version, of October 2016: PE 589.828.

Book EU Japan Relations and the Crisis of Multilateralism

Download or read book EU Japan Relations and the Crisis of Multilateralism written by Julie Gilson and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Presenting the history of relations between the European Union and Japan, this book explains the origins and significance of the momentous 2018 Economic Partnership Agreement and its parallel Strategic Partnership Agreement. Set within the historical context of the 1991 Hague Declaration and Action Plan of 2001, this book analyses the impact of recent background changes to the liberal trading order, the proliferation of free trade agreements, and uncertainty about the US' role in the world, on relations between Japan and the EU. Adopting a path dependent approach, it illustrates how these agreements were reached as a result of growing patterns of cooperative behaviour between the EU and Japan, and the imprint of shared past experiences in areas from trade to security. In so doing, this book also raises important questions about the future of multilateral cooperation, exploring the potential for bilateral agreements to undermine the possibility of finding international solutions to increasingly international problems. EU-Japan Relations and the Crisis of Multilateralism will appeal to students and scholars of European and Japanese politics and international relations, as well as policy makers internationally with an interest in these significant agreements."--

Book Europe Japan and America in the 1990s

Download or read book Europe Japan and America in the 1990s written by Theodor Leuenberger and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competition and cooperation between Japan, Europe and USA is the key issue of this book - both at government and business levels. Both short-term and long-termin competitive cooperation between Western and Japanese firms and institutions can be fruitful. Cooperation however, provides no easy solutions to problems which Western economies have been unable to solve on their own. Governments as well as companies are often unprepared for cooperation with Japan within the framework of larger-scale projects. On theother hand, Japan itself still lacks the leadership capacities to match its present economic and technological dominance. Thus the Japanese strategyfor a Number Two role in cooperation with the USA and the EC is described. The discussion focuses on the implications of US/Japanese relations for Europe. It further highlights future relations between the US and Japan in the field of technology, and also deals with the EC/Japan context.
