Book excerpt: This is the first part of the complete reprint of Japan Illustrated 1934-1938, the most important photographic yearbook of Japan in the pre-WW2 period. With the advice of Kentaro Kaneko, statesman and diplomat, and Miles Walter Vaughn, an influential American journalist in Japan, it was launched by Nippon Dempo News Agency (now called Dentsu), the leading press and advertisement agency, and played an important role to promote Japan and improve the cultural image of the country which was being criticised by Western society for military aggression. Each yearbook, which includes many photos and plate sections, describes current affairs and holds the latest trade data. There is a 'General Guide for Foreign Travellers', which includes detailed information of famous tourist places to visit and the regions of Japan, and introduces local culture and seasonal events. There are also chapters about the Japanese colonies like South Sea Islands, Taiwan, Chosen, Karafuto, and Manchu. Each yearly volume carries advertisements of more than 200 companies from where some hard-to-find data of Japanese business activities of the time can be obtained. Although the yearbook lasted only a few years, it covered one of the most interesting period of Japanese modern history, and its complete reprint will provide scholars and students of the subject with valuable source both textually and visually.

Active from the 1920s, he founded the Kyoto Garden Society in 1932. In 1939 he designed his own first masterpiece, the garden at the main hall of the Tôfuku-ji temple. From then on he designed 240 gardens all over Japan until his death in 1975; amongst the most famous are the Tenrai-an tea garden (1969) and the Matsuo Taisha garden (1975). The main characteristic of his gardens is that they respect tradition and, at the same time, depart from conventional paradigms by opening up to the influence of Western modernism with its own language. The first part of the book covers Shigemori’s life and factors that influenced his work. The second part contains a detailed illustration of 17 gardens. The book is published as a new and revised edition.

To this end, the book integrates the narrative analysis based on newly available archival documents and the quantitative analysis based on newly constructed macroeconomic data and contemporary econometric methodologies. This work shows how Japan escaped from the depression in its early stage. It illustrates a transmission mechanism of the macroeconomic stimulus package of currency depreciation, easy money, and fiscal expansion. As well, it argues that the key for economic recovery was currency depreciation and that expectations played a pivotal role in ending deflation and kick-starting economic recovery. Also contained here is an exploration of politico-economic interaction in the shaping of economic policy and the long-term consequences of policy actions such as departure from the gold standard and initiation of the government debt finance by the central bank. It is shown that the collapse of the international gold standard and the lack of governance of military spending resulted in a loss of fiscal discipline in the long run.

Book excerpt: A Study of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University Kingdom of Beauty shows that the discovery of mingei (folk art) by Japanese intellectuals in the 1920s and 1930s was central to the complex process by which Japan became both a modern nation and an imperial world power. Kim Brandt’s account of the mingei movement locates its origins in colonial Korea, where middle-class Japanese artists and collectors discovered that imperialism offered them special opportunities to amass art objects and gain social, cultural, and even political influence. Later, mingei enthusiasts worked with (and against) other groups—such as state officials, fascist ideologues, rival folk art organizations, local artisans, newspaper and magazine editors, and department store managers—to promote their own vision of beautiful prosperity for Japan, Asia, and indeed the world. In tracing the history of mingei activism, Brandt considers not only Yanagi Muneyoshi, Hamada Shōji, Kawai Kanjirō, and other well-known leaders of the folk art movement but also the often overlooked networks of provincial intellectuals, craftspeople, marketers, and shoppers who were just as important to its success. The result of their collective efforts, she makes clear, was the transformation of a once-obscure category of pre-industrial rural artifacts into an icon of modern national style.
