Book Feasible Planet A Guide to More Sustainable Living

Download or read book Feasible Planet A Guide to More Sustainable Living written by Ken Kroes and published by 1779671 Alberta Inc.. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you concerned about the state of our planet and hope that governments and corporations will find a sustainable way for us to live? If you do not think about it too hard, that may work, but will it? Left on their own, with drivers of popularity and profits, I am not too convinced that it will. The missing part of this equation is you and me. Individuals who believe that corporations and governments can do better. Individuals who believe that through action, we can buy a bit more time to develop and implement solutions to our critical issues. Did I hear a groan out there when you read the word ‘actions’? Do not worry! Most of the actions that I am referring to will not only help save the planet, but will benefit you right away through saving money, time, better health, and having a happier life in general. Sustainability goes beyond controlling our consumption and pollution. There are key social, political, and economic areas that need to be addressed as well, and there are several steps that individuals can take to help in these areas. For those of you who feel we could do more, this book is for you and is loaded with actionable activities, the reasons for doing them, and explores why we are not doing them already. Every journey starts with a first step. Hopefully this book will lead to those first sustainable steps and that will change the world.

  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Pop Music and Hip Ennui written by Macon Holt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pop Music and Hip Ennui: A Sonic Fiction of Capitalist Realism, Macon Holt provides the imaginative and analytical resources to think with contemporary pop music to investigate the ambivalences of contemporary culture and the potentials in it for change. Drawing on Kodwo Eshun's practice of Sonic Fiction and Mark Fisher's analytical framework of capitalist realism, Holt explores the multiplicities contained in contemporary pop from sensation to abstraction and from the personal to the political. Pop Music and Hip Ennui unravels the assumptions embedded in the cultural and critical analysis of popular music. In doing so, it provides new ways to understand the experience of listening to pop music and living in the sonic atmosphere it produces. This book neither excuses pop's oppressive tendencies nor dismisses the pleasures of its sensations.

Book The Routledge Companion to Contemporary Art Visual Culture and Climate Change

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Contemporary Art Visual Culture and Climate Change written by T. J. Demos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International in scope, this volume brings together leading and emerging voices working at the intersection of contemporary art, visual culture, activism, and climate change, and addresses key questions, such as: why and how do art and visual culture, and their ethics and values, matter with regard to a world increasingly shaped by climate breakdown? Foregrounding a decolonial and climate-justice-based approach, this book joins efforts within the environmental humanities in seeking to widen considerations of climate change as it intersects with social, political, and cultural realms. It simultaneously expands the nascent branches of ecocritical art history and visual culture, and builds toward the advancement of a robust and critical interdisciplinarity appropriate to the complex entanglements of climate change. This book will be of special interest to scholars and practitioners of contemporary art and visual culture, environmental studies, cultural geography, and political ecology.

Book National Parks Forever

  • Author : Jonathan B. Jarvis
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2022-05-27
  • ISBN : 0226819108
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book National Parks Forever written by Jonathan B. Jarvis and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-05-27 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two leaders of the National Park Service provide a front-row seat to the disastrous impact of partisan politics over the past fifty years—and offer a bold vision for the parks’ future. The US National Parks, what environmentalist and historian Wallace Stegner called America’s “best idea,” are under siege. Since 1972, partisan political appointees in the Department of the Interior have offered two conflicting views of the National Park Service (NPS): one vision emphasizes preservation and science-based decision-making, and another prioritizes economic benefits and privatization. These politically driven shifts represent a pernicious, existential threat to the very future of our parks. For the past fifty years, brothers Jonathan B. and T. Destry Jarvis have worked both within and outside NPS as leaders and advocates. National Parks Forever interweaves their two voices to show how our parks must be protected from those who would open them to economic exploitation, while still allowing generations to explore and learn in them. Their history also details how Congress and administration appointees have used budget and staffing cuts to sabotage NPS’s ability to manage the parks and even threatened their existence. Drawing on their experience, Jarvis and Jarvis make a bold and compelling proposal: that it is time for NPS to be removed from the Department of the Interior and made an independent agency, similar to the Smithsonian Institution, giving NPS leaders the ability to manage park resources and plan our parks’ protection, priorities, and future.

Book Principles of Macroeconomics

Download or read book Principles of Macroeconomics written by Howard J. Sherman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years since 2007 the U.S. economy has endured a severe financial crisis, a Great Recession, and continuing heavy unemployment. These events have led to increasing discontent among many people contributing to a substantial vote for Bernie Sanders and the election of Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Europe has witnessed the rise of nationalist parties and Brexit. In the face of these problems and events, economics must change. Principles of Macroeconomics: Activist vs. Austerity Policies provides an antidote to the standard macro texts offering multiple points of view instead of one standard line, a fact-based focus on the causes and cures of instability in economics, and an examination of inequality in the United States. Readers are introduced to both the Classical view, which takes the conservative approach and argues for an austerity program to reduce the size of the government; and the Progressive view, which argues for government intervention to create a strong recovery. These ideas are applied to all the key macroeconomic topics including economic growth, business cycles, and monetary policy. Using the methodology of Wesley Mitchell and drawing on the work of Keynes, the authors also explore topics such as unemployment, the human cost of economic crashes, increasing inequality of income, and the history of capitalism. This second edition includes new material on the Obama recovery, the crisis in the Eurozone, the rise of populism, and the current state of healthcare, education, and environmental issues in America to bring the text fully up to date. It will be of great interest to undergraduate students and particularly those studying the economics of the United States.

Book Examining Energy and the Environment around the World

Download or read book Examining Energy and the Environment around the World written by Bruce E. Johansen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses ten issues pertaining to energy and the environment, such as climate change, fossil fuels, endangered species, and renewable energy, and examines how these issues are affecting countries around the world. In the industrial age, first powered by coal and then more often by oil, environmental degradation nearly inevitably followed resource exploitation and energy production. This book examines environmental issues in specific countries around the world as well as solutions some of these countries have discovered in order to help save the environment. This volume includes 10 chapters, each addressing a specific issue relating to energy and the environment as it pertains to a variety of countries, including toxic chemicals, pollution, deforestation, and climate change. Each chapter begins with an introduction to the issue. Following the chapter introduction, each chapter highlights that issue in eight countries and provides historic perspective. This work provides an overview for high school students and college students at the undergraduate level on 10 important topics that address matters relating to energy and the environment in the 21st century.

Book Racialized Protest and the State

Download or read book Racialized Protest and the State written by Hank Johnston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together leading scholars of social movements and protest, this volume offers an up-to-date overview of several of the key ethnic and racial movements in the contemporary United States. The organizations, strategies, and challenges of the Black Lives movement, mainstream Black organizations, the Mexican-American Dreamer groups, immigrant-rights mobilizations, Arab-American resistance, and White nationalism are all examined by situating them in a rapidly evolving and—in many ways—increasingly unfavorable state context. With empirical studies linked by their dialogue with theories of social movement and protest, and, in particular, recent trends that emphasize the dynamic relations among social movement groups and organizations, Racialized Protest and the State also considers the multiciplicity of state players and the roles of hostile civic actors who oppose the movements' challenges. A cutting-edge analysis of an increasingly important dimension of contentious politics in complex and diverse Western societies, this book will appeal to scholars of sociology and politics with interests in social movements, nonviolent resistance, protest campaigns, and ethnic mobilization.

Book The Need for Humility in Policymaking

Download or read book The Need for Humility in Policymaking written by Stefanie Haeffele and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulations impact a wide array of market and social activities that influence our daily lives. Regulations are attempts to correct perceived market failures, caused by information asymmetries, externalities, and principal-agent problems, and to provide public goods, which would otherwise be underprovided. Government actors are responsible for identifying these issues, weighing the costs and benefits of intervention, and designing and implementating regulations to improve society. Good regulations help mitigate issues in the economy without inciting new problems and without the costs exceeding the benefits of intervention. This requires intensive analysis and an awareness of the complexities of social life. Our society is complex and dynamic where people face knowledge and incentive problems, whether in the market, politics, or civil society. By examining this complex reality, we can better understand why regulations arise and persist and the challenges of reform. We argue that this approach to policymaking and policy analysis requires humility; an acknowledgment of the challenges we face when intervening in our society. This volume intends to cultivate an appreciation for the complexity of human decision making and the incentives that drive human behavior. By examining specific policy changes, it will delve into the effects of and lessons learned from regulations in financial markets, computer and internet governance, and health care innovation and delivery. This volume will be of interest to students, scholars, and policymakers who seek to understand the complexities of regulation in a dynamic social world.

Book My Complicated Yet Wonderful Life

Download or read book My Complicated Yet Wonderful Life written by Terri Spitzer and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2023-06-26 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story about a young girl who was born in 1962 and grew up in a small suburb in Denver, Colorado. She had an older brother and sister and a younger sister. She differed from her siblings in that as a child, she had endless amounts of energy and enthusiasm and wanted to learn and do as much as she could academically and athletically. She was a quick learner and always had high expectations for herself, not to be a show-off but to prove to herself that she could do it. She preferred to play sports with her brother, who was six years older than her, and he was not afraid to show her some of the hard knocks of playing football or baseball. She was willing to take whatever it took to be able to play. When she was four years old, her mother had taken her grandmother to visit a friend. While they waited, her mother taught her to memorize the Pledge of Allegiance. She loved to learn and could not wait to go to school. In elementary school, she had a wonderful first-grade teacher who taught her and other children reading skills that allowed them to read at higher levels. By second grade, they were all reading at the seventh-grade level. As she went through elementary school, she would be studying in all subjects the higher level of courses. As she entered junior high school, she knew that the classes would be more difficult and that there would be a lot more homework. She was able to keep up with the work, and in the fall, she signed up for the basketball team. She loved playing at a higher level and meeting some new friends. By Christmastime, she began to have less energy and noticed that she was a little more tired than usual. As spring approached, she signed up for the track team. She was never much of a runner, but she thought it would help her get in shape. Over spring break, she would try and practice running 100-yard dashes and would notice how difficult it was and how tired it would make her. She participated in most of the track meets and, toward the end of April, started developing an open sore on her right forearm. Early in May, her fatigue was getting worse. The sore on her arm was not healing, and she began running a fever. She would miss over two weeks of school, and one day, her fever went up to 105 degrees, and they took her to the doctor, who gave her a shot of penicillin. It slowly brought the temperature down to 101-102. The sore on her arm continued to get worse, and her level of endurance kept going down. On Friday, her mom had her go back to school, even though her temperature was still 101 degrees, and she wrapped her arm up. Her mom, who worked for a doctor, picked her up from school and took her to have blood drawn. She would go to work with her mom on Monday, and he would have the results of the blood work and examine her. She had no idea about what she was about to find out or what would lie ahead of her.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most voters during the 2016 presidential election were largely unaware of Trump’s forty-year history as a skilled con man but an incompetent failure otherwise. In anticipation of the 2020 election, this book describes Trump’s public life from his mob connections in the early 1980s through his first two stumbling years in the White House. It documents Trump’s inescapable history of ignorance, self-absorption, poor judgment, corruption, impulsive decision-making, bigotry, and strong authoritarian instincts. Taken together, all guaranteed a disastrous presidency. His first two years in the White House fulfilled this guarantee, threatening America’s constitutional democracy.

Book Adaptations in the Franchise Era

Download or read book Adaptations in the Franchise Era written by Kyle Meikle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptations in the Franchise Era re-evaluates adaptation's place in a popular culture marked by the movement of content and audiences across more media borders than ever before. While adaptation has historically been understood as the transfer of stories from one medium to another-more often than not, from novel to film-the growing interconnectedness of media and media industries in the early twenty-first century raises new questions about the form and function of adaptation as both a product and a process. Where does adaptation fit within massive franchises that span pages, stages, screens, and theme parks? Rising scholar Kyle Meikle illuminates adaptation's enduring and essential role in the rise of franchises in the 2000s and 2010s. During that decade-and-a-half, adaptations set the foundation for multiplexed, multiplied film series, piloted streaming television's forays into original programming, found their way into audiences' hands in apps and video games, and went live in theatrical experiences on Broadway and beyond. The proliferation of adaptations was matched only by a proliferation of adaptation, as fans remixed and remade their favourite franchises online and off-. This volume considers how producers and consumers defined adaptations-and how adaptations defined themselves-through the endless intertextual play of the franchise era.
