Download or read book The Awesome Power written by Richard F. Haynes and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since World War II the importance of the military command function of the American presidency has increased dramatically. U.S. chief executives have emerged virtually unchecked as wielders of enormous military power. The Awesome Power, the first comprehensive study of Harry S. Truman as commander in chief, is an important and highly relevant book, especially in view of the growing concern over the president's ability to wage war without the consent of either the Congress or the American people. A selective chronicle of the events in which Truman's decisions were of historic significance, the book analyzes his decision-making process in terms of the information available to him, the existing pressures, and the relationship of his decisions to his own well-defined concepts of how a commander in chief should function. The author gives a detailed account of the events and circumstances leading up to Truman's most significant decision -- to use the atomic bomb against Japan. He also examines Truman's decisions on postwar civilian control of atomic energy, his intervention in Korea, his leadership in the Cold War, and his conflict with General Douglas MacArthur, whose opposition to the president's limited-war policies endangered the very basis of the civil-military relationship.Based in part on research in classified documents previously untapped by nongovernmental researchers, The Awesome Power is a thorough treatment of a subject of great contemporary significance, with one of the most fascinating characters in American political history as its central figure.
Download or read book The Wrong War written by Rosemary Foot and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1951, General Omar Bradley declared publicly that war with China would involve the United States "in the wrong war, at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and with the wrong enemy." Despite the stated intent of the U.S. to keep the Korean conflict from spreading, the debate on extending the war was far more intense and protracted than previous accounts of this period have suggested. Concentrating on the debate over expansion, Rosemary Foot reveals the strains it caused both within the U.S. bureaucracy and between America and its North Atlantic allies. She supplies important new information on the U.S. government's appraisal of Sino-Soviet relations between 1950 and 1953, and makes clear that a high proportion of U.S. officials came to recognize the limited nature of Soviet support for China. Explaining why the Eisenhower administration nearly unleashed nuclear weapons on China in the spring of 1953, Foot demonstrates that the Korean war would very likely have grown into a conflict of major proportions if the Chinese and North Koreans had not conceded the final issue of the truce talks—the question of the voluntary repatriation of prisoners of war.

Download or read book Truman and MacArthur written by Michael D. Pearlman and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-12 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truman and MacArthur offers an objective and comprehensive account of the very public confrontation between a sitting president and a well-known general over the military's role in the conduct of foreign policy. In November 1950, with the army of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea mostly destroyed, Chinese military forces crossed the Yalu River. They routed the combined United Nations forces and pushed them on a long retreat down the Korean peninsula. Hoping to strike a decisive blow that would collapse the Chinese communist regime in Beijing, General Douglas MacArthur, the commander of the Far East Theater, pressed the administration of President Harry S. Truman for authorization to launch an invasion of China across the Taiwan straits. Truman refused; MacArthur began to argue his case in the press, a challenge to the tradition of civilian control of the military. He moved his protest into the partisan political arena by supporting the Republican opposition to Truman in Congress. This violated the President's fundamental tenet that war and warriors should be kept separate from politicians and electioneering. On April 11, 1951 he finally removed MacArthur from command. Viewing these events through the eyes of the participants, this book explores partisan politics in Washington and addresses the issues of the political power of military officers in an administration too weak to carry national policy on its own accord. It also discusses America's relations with European allies and its position toward Formosa (Taiwan), the long-standing root of the dispute between Truman and MacArthur.

Book excerpt: Combining history with culture, the ocean with exploration, and risk with triumph—this rich offering is the only picture book account of Thor Heyerdahl's world-famous Kon-Tiki expedition, during which he sailed a raft 5,000 miles from the coast of South America to the islands of the South Pacific. Author Deborah Kogan Ray clearly and succinctly sets up how Norwegian anthropologist Heyerdahl became convinced that ancient Peruvians arrived in the South Pacific via raft, why he wanted to re-create the voyage, and how he planned for it. She uses primary-source quotations on each spread to shore up the factual history of the events portrayed in the book. Her illustrations add emotion to this harrowing journey.
Download or read book Bombs in the Backyard written by A. Constandina Titus and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 27, 1951, the first atomic weapon was detonated over a section of desert known as Frenchman Flat in southern Nevada, providing dramatic evidence of the Nevada Test Site's beginnings. Fifty years later, author A. Costandina Titus reviews contemporary nuclear policy issues concerning the continued viability of that site for weapons testing. Titus has updated her now-classic study of atomic testing with fifteen years of political and cultural history, from the mid-1980s Reagan-Gorbachev nuclear standoff to the authorization of the Nevada Test Site Research Center, a Desert Research Institute facility scheduled to open in 2001. In this second edition of Bombs in the Backyard, Titus deftly covers the post-Cold War transformation of American atomic policy as well as our overarching cultural interest in all matters atomic, making this a must-read for anyone interested in atomic policy and politics.
Download or read book Ted Saucier s Bottoms Up With Illustrations by Twelve of America s Most Distinguished Artists written by Ted Saucier and published by Martino Fine Books. This book was released on 2011-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2011 Reprint of 1951 Illustrated First Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. For almost 4 decades, Saucier was the publicist for the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. His 1951 cocktail classic book, Bottoms Up includes over 200 drinks, fully indexed, plus twelve risque for the period] illustrations by twelve different artists. A typical review of a cocktail follows the actual recipe: THE LAST WORD: Damrak Gin / Green Chartreuse / Luxardo Maraschino / Lime / Sugar "This cocktail was introduced around here about thirty years ago by Frank Fogarty, who was very well known in vaudeville. He was called the 'Dublin Minstrel, ' and was a very fine monologue artist." So wrote Ted Saucier in 1951 when introducing this drink in Bottoms Up. Saucier credits the drink to the Detroit Athletic Club, and if the bartender's recollection is correct, that would place the Last Word as a Prohibition-era cocktail. If that's the case, then the Last Word is one of the finest cocktails to come out of that bleak period in American history. Four ingredients, two of them fairly exotic, working in equal parts to create perfect harmony.

Book excerpt: "There's a long drive. It's gonna be. I believe. The Giants win the pennant. The Giants win the pennant. The Giants win the pennant. The Giants win the pennant." -- Russ Hodges, October 3, 1951 On the fiftieth anniversary of "The Shot Heard Round the World," Don DeLillo reassembles in fiction the larger-than-life characters who on October 3, 1951, witnessed Bobby Thomson's pennant-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jackie Gleason is razzing Toots Shor in Leo Durocher's box seats; J. Edgar Hoover, basking in Sinatra's celebrity, is about to be told that the Russians have tested an atomic bomb; and Russ Hodges, raw-throated and excitable, announces the game -- the Giants and the Dodgers at the Polo Grounds in New York. DeLillo's transcendent account of one of the iconic events of the twentieth century is a masterpiece of American sportswriting.

Accessing more than fifty photographic anthologies that are widely held in libraries across the country--along with images from two critical annual compilations, Best of Photojournalism and Graphis Annual--this book identifies photographs that record the history of our times. Extensive descriptions of the individual photographs--from the commonplace to the extraordinary--are identified in this volume. Organized into three sections--Photographers, Subjects of Photographs, and Portraits of Named Individuals--these descriptions provide the researcher with important information on each photograph. An essential volume for all public, special and academic libraries, this index will be an invaluable resource for reporters, historians, academics, students and anyone wishing to research photographs and photographers.
