Book excerpt: Marking the remarkable century of Ben Uri Gallery and Museum, from humble beginnings in London's East End in 1915 to a fully-fledged mainstream art museum, under its banner 'Art, Identity and Migration', this publication vividly illustrates rarely seen masterworks from its collection by some of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, including Soutine, Chagall, Auerbach, Bomberg, Kitaj and Kossoff. Further highlights include the 'Whitechapel Boys'; Les Peintres Juifs de L'Ecole de Paris, Official War artists from both conflicts; mid-century emigres influencing the direction of the arts, and contemporary artists making ground-breaking work across new media. This unique collection, primarily of artists born into the Jewish faith, many shaping modern British, European and American art history, represents a distinct visual survey of artistic and social life in Britain and the cultural heritage of British Jewry. A range of texts provides a fascinating context for a collection born 'Out of Chaos'. Book Painters of Reality

Download or read book Painters of Reality written by Andrea Bayer and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2004 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Largely as a result of Leonardo's innovative work for the Sforza court in Milan, a rich vein of naturalism developed in North Italian art during the late fifteenth century. Questioning the strongly classicizing, idealized style dominant in areas south of the Apennines, artists in the region of Lombardy turned to an investigation of the natural world based on direct observation and adherence to strict visual truth. This heritage of realism continued to be of key importance for more than two hundred years, finding its greatest expression in the art of Caravaggio and eventually influencing the course of Baroque painting throughout Europe. Religious scenes, portraits, and landscapes were all transformed by this new naturalism, which also spurred an interest in still lifes and genre scenes as subjects for paintings. Painters of Reality, titled after an influential exhibition held in Milan more than fifty years ago, is the first study in English of this major aspect of Italian art. Reexamining the subject in light of copious subsequent scholarship, the authors of this volume contribute major essays that define and discuss naturalism as it appeared in both Lombard paintings and drawings. There is also a fresh consideration of the Northern Italian predecessors whose influence is apparent, either directly or indirectly, in the paintings of Caravaggio. More detailed discussions of the subject center on the precise elements that constituted Leonardo's "hypernaturalism"; the important schools of painting that arose in Brescia, Bergamo, Cremona, and Milan; and Caravaggio's most notable successors in northern Italy, who kept Lombard realism alive into the eighteenth century. Map, artists' biographies, bibliography, and index are also included" -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

Book excerpt: Jacob Epstein and Dora Gordine were members of the group of talented Anglo-Jewish artists - the Whitechapel Boys and their associates - who were all born, raised or worked in London's East End during the first three decades of the twentieth century. They had a significant impact on twentieth-century British art and their contribution to British Modernism was especially valuable. This fascinating comparison of two contrasting British-based emigre sculptors examines how both figures responded to and were inspired by non-Western cultures in much of their work to create an extraordinarily rich and sophisticated visual vocabulary, which resonates as much in today's multicultural society as it did some seventy years ago. An illuminating introduction by Sir Anthony Caro and contributions from scholars including the writer and critic Richard Cork, Dr. Jonathan Black, current AHRB Research Fellow at Kingston University (home of the Gordine archive), Brenda Martin, Curator, Dorich House, and Victor Arwas, writer, gallerist and collector uncover new insights into hitherto little-researched aspects of Epstein's career, and rediscover the long-neglected talents of Gordine. Published in collaboration with the Ben Uri Gallery, the publication coincides with an exhibition of the sculpture, ethnographic pieces and works on paper of the artists at the Ben Uri Gallery, the London Jewish Museum of Art.

Book The Glasgow Boys

Download or read book The Glasgow Boys written by Roger Billcliffe and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the 19th century, a group of young Glasgow-based painters established an international reputation for realism and plein-air landscape painting. Led by James Guthrie, John Lavery, Arthur Melville, George Henry, and E. A. Hornel, the Glasgow Boys, as they came to be known, shared an enthusiasm for strong, fresh colors, naturalistic subject matter, and a willingness to travel outside Scotland for subjects and settings. Their enthusiasm for naturalism was equaled only by their dislike of the Scottish arts establishment. In this widely acclaimed book, Roger Billcliffe describes not only the work of the individual artists but also their rejection by local collectors and officialdom before European success caused their work to become much in demand. First published 20 years ago, the book rekindled interest in the group and their work. Now redesigned with more than 200 illustrations in color, it introduces the collective to a new generation of readers and collectors.
