Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 2035, and the crew from the first expedition to Mars is returning to Earth. The crewmembers are anxious to get home, and ennui pervades the ship. The mood is broken by a series of mysterious events that jeopardize their safety. Someone or something is threatening the crew. Is it an alien being? A psychotic crewmember? A malfunctioning computer? The truth raises questions about the crewmembers’ fate and that of the human race.In this novel, the intent is to show real psychological issues that could affect a crew returning from a long-duration mission to Mars. The storyline presents a mystery that keeps the reader guessing, yet the issues at stake are based on the findings from the author’s research and other space-related work over the past 40+ years. The novel touches on actual plans being discussed for such an expedition as well as notions involving the search for Martian life and panspermia. The underlying science, in particular the psychological, psychiatric, and interpersonal elements, are introduced and discussed by the author in an extensive appendix.Nick Kanas is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, where he directed the group therapy training program. For over 20 years he conducted research on group therapy, and for nearly 20 years after that he was the Principal Investigator of NASA-funded research on astronauts and cosmonauts. He is the co-author of Space Psychology and Psychiatry, which won the 2004 International Academy of Astronautics Life Science Book Award, and the author of Humans in Space: The Psychological Hurdles, which won the 2016 International Academy of Astronautics Life Science Book Award. Download or read book Comrades Avenge Us written by Stephen G. Esrati and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-06-28 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maj. William Macnaughton of the Canadian army and Maj. John Bowles of O.S.S. lead a team into occupied Yugoslavia. Captured on Christmas 1944, the team's enlisted men are mercilessly beheaded while Bowles and Macnaughton are held as bargaining chips in case Germany loses the war. Tortured by the SS, and then liberated at the end of the war--Bowles and Macnaughton hunt for their captors across four continents to bring them to justice. The book delves into how the United States actually helped some Nazi war criminals escape, including the Nazi who helped put Neil Armstrong on the moon even though he had killed a bunch of GIs in an underground V-2 factory because one of them allegedly stole a loaf of bread. Other points of historical interest is the story of the attempt by Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, R-Wis., to get all of the killers reponsible for the Malmdy Massacre off the hook. McCarthy claimed the U.S. Army obtained confessions by torturing the SS men by attacking their genitals. That charge turns out to be a lie. Bowles an all-American from Ohio and Macnaughton who becomes the last Canadian to be knighted organize a team to capture the perpetrators in a story of revenge in the page-turner thriller "Comrades, Avenge us." Reviews: by Edward J.Trout, a schoolteacher from Bristol, Pa. I read Stephen's Book in record time. Kudos to Mr. Esrati for a "great" read. It was one of those "rare books" that one wants to slow down when one nears the end. Well all readers of this genre know why. There are few authors who can carry the reader and accurate history in their narrative. Stephen's technique of having his characters narrate "mini-history lessons" on such a complex topic was a "sui-generis" stylistic accomplishment. Review: by Kevin Begin, a musician from Dayton, Ohio Stephen Esrati wrote a book that kept my interest from start to finish. I thought I was reading a non-fiction novel until I read the acknowledgements at the end. The story moves quickly starting at the planning stage of a military intelligence operation during WWII and finally focusing on the search for Nazi war criminals. The book has no slow sections, and as such, I was always engrossed with the material. What makes the book read like non-fiction must be the result of Mr. Esrati's dilegent research into the people and places that comprise this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves adventure and the pursuit of justice.
Download or read book Intelligent Software Agents written by Walter Brenner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2 chapter contains examples of intelligent agents, arranged according to their appli cation areas. Chapter 7 closes with a prospective view of the future development of intelligent agents. Everyone concerned with the Internet and the new possibilities of information and communication technology knows that nowadays there is no area that is devel oping faster. The authors are aware of the dynamics of this research area and its effects when they describe such a fast developing area in a slow, traditional me dium like a book. One thing is sure today: when the book appears on the market, new intelligent agents will already exist and some of the hypotheses made by this book will have been shown to be incorrect. Why, despite this, does it make sense to write a classical book on this subject? Is there an alternative? Experience shows that the majority of the people in business and public life who make decisions on the use of new technologies continue to prefer books and articles in periodicals rather than electronic sources such as the Internet. Or is there some other reason for the enormous success of Nicolas Negroponte's book Being Digital, which we thank for multimedia and many concepts of the digital and networked world, and even intelligent agents? Today, a book is still the only way to establish a new area.

Download or read book The Star Wars Heresies written by Paul F. McDonald and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the insatiable public appetite for all things Star Wars, the more analytical side of the saga is all too often ignored. This book offers a new way of seeing George Lucas' space opera--particularly the prequel trilogy, a series never given a fair chance because of constant comparisons to the iconic originals. In the classic style of Joseph Campbell, the trilogy is viewed through the lens of myth and metaphor, revealing a body of work not only worthy of scholarly study but perhaps destined to find therein its home. A wide variety of philosophical and mythological themes are presented and expounded upon, drawing from a rich source of scholars, thinkers, writers, and poets from East and West alike. Heretical or not, the Star Wars prequels are a surprisingly rich source of insight into the saga--as well as the human drama--as a whole.

Many facts mentioned are based on primary sources, such as the living memory of relatives of those who once lived and those who now live in the Silver River basin. It is ultimately a book about rescuing historical events told by generations of a family struggling for order and freedom.
