If she had had the best teeth in the world, her mouth would still have looked too large. As it is, I dread to think how she will look. Oh, perhaps her teeth will improve, I heard good natured Mrs. Wilton answer. Janet is just now at an ugly age one cannot, at nine years old, say how a girl will look when she is grown up. There was a pause, and then my mother sighed. Oh, my dear Mrs. Wilton, I know quite well how Janet will look when she is grown up. I am not one of those mothers who cannot see their children's imperfections my anxiety makes me keen-sighted. I see clearly enough that Janet can never be otherwise than very plain she has not one good feature in her fape except her-eyes, and her complexion is hopeless. You call it so, because your other children have such beautiful complexions. How exquisitely fair Ernestine is! How lovely she promises to be l - and Charlie, I do think. Is the handsomest boy I ever saw in my life. Charlie is very well, and Ernestine will, I suppose, be pretty that makes me the more sorry about Janet. When there are only two sisters, it is a pity they should be so nu like. I shall never know how to dress them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Janet Ward: A Daughter of the Manse Remains essentially the same in the passing years. Girls confront life, and life wears the aspect of the sphynx. What shall it offer them, what gifts be stow, what good shall they do? Girls are restless, they long for careers, they are caught in the whirl of the period. They acknowledge the claim that society in the realm of poverty, as in that of wealth, has upon them, every one. In the end, with my Janet, those are the happiest who find their career ending in a good man's love, and their world bounded _by the four walls of home. Book excerpt: "It was 12 years ago when I moved to Mexico, leaving my comfortable, familiar life and community, driving by myself to start a new life in a foreign country. Some sort of bravado or naivete or, as my friends would say later, courage, allowed me to pooh-pooh concerns about all the unknowns- culture, language, customs-and head off nonetheless."And so begins one of the more than two dozen essays in this anthology, written by "regular" women about their "regular" lives and how they decided to change everything and move to Mexico. In simple, engaging words straight from the heart, the contributors to Why We Left share their plans and preparations, hardships and challenges, joys and satisfactions as their journeys to new lives in Mexico unfold.
