Book excerpt: By the best selling authors of 'Michael Jackson: For The Record' Janet Jackson was born on 16th May 1966 in Gary, Indiana - she was just three years old when five of her older brothers, as the Jackson 5, scored their first hit: I Want You Back. Janet's first, self-titled, album was released in 1982 when she was 16 years old, but her input to it was minimal. Not until her first marriage, to James DeBarge, was annulled in November 1985 did Janet sit down, to think seriously about her future direction - and, to her surprise, she realised more than anything she wanted to make music. Decision made, Janet bravely took the first big step on the road to taking control of her own destiny. She fired her manager: her father. Instead, against her father's advice, she teamed up with James 'Jimmy Jam' Harris III & Terry Lewis - formerly members of Prince's band The Time - and the rest, as the saying goes, is history.

Since 1969, when the Jackson 5 released their debut album, DIANA ROSS PRESENTS..., the family has scored an impressive 77 different Top 40 albums around the world including, of course, the no.1 best selling album of all-time: THRILLER. The Top 40 albums detailed in this book are listed chronologically, according to the date they first entered the chart in one of twenty countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium (Wallonia), Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Zimbabwe. The most recent Top 40 album by a member of the Jackson family is Michael's posthumous remix album, IMMORTAL, which entered the charts in December 2011.The main body of the book is followed by 'The Almost Top 40 Albums', which gives an honourable mention to Jackson albums that have peaked between no.41 and no.50 in one or more of the twenty featured countries. There follows a listing of the Top 40 Jackson albums according to a points-based system, plus a fascinating 'Trivia' section which round-ups the most successful Jacksons and the most successful Jackson singles in each country.Author's Note: The companion to this book, which focuses on Top 40 singles from around the globe, is titled 'Michael, Janet & The Jackson Family - All The Top 40 Singles'. Book Michael Janet and the Jackson Family All the Top 40 Hits

Download or read book Michael Janet and the Jackson Family All the Top 40 Hits written by Craig Halstead and published by . This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jacksons are far and away the most successful family ever to enter the music business. Since 1969, when 'I Want You Back' became the Jackson 5's first hit single, the family has scored an astonishing 160+ different Top 40 hits around the world, and that's not including uncredited appearances on singles such as USA For Africa's 'We Are The World' and Rockwell's 'Somebody's Watching Me'. The Top 40 singles detailed in this book are listed chronologically, according to the date they first entered the chart in one of ten countries: Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States, and are numbered 1-164. Singles like 'We Are The World' and 'Somebody's Watching Me' are also included in the correct chronological order but aren't numbered.Where possible, each Top 40 hit is illustrated with a picture sleeve. As picture sleeves were rarely issued in the USA or the UK in the early-to-mid 1970s, most of the earlier sleeves shown originate from countries like France, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands. For each Top 40 hit, the catalogue numbers and release dates are detailed, for both the USA and the UK, followed by the Top 100 chart runs in each of the ten countries, including any chart re-entries. The catalogue numbers quoted are for 7" singles up to 1990, and for CD singles after 1990, unless otherwise stated. Of course, in recent years, it has become increasingly common for singles to be released digitally only. The most recent Top 40 hit by a member of the Jackson family is Michael's posthumous duet with Akon, 'Hold My Hand', which entered the charts in December 2010.The main body of the book is followed by 'The Almost Top 40 Hits', which gives an honourable mention to Jackson singles that have peaked between no.41 and no.50 in one or more of the ten featured countries, and a fascinating 'Trivia' section which round-up the most successful Jacksons and the most successful Jackson singles in each country.Author's Note: This book is intended as an introduction to the music of the Jackson family. If you are looking for a more in depth look at Janet's or Michael's career, I can recommend two books I have co-written with Chris Cadman, namely 'Janet Jackson: For The Record' and Michael Jackson: For The Record (2nd Edition'). Book Man in the Music

Download or read book Man in the Music written by Joseph Vogel and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For half a century, Michael Jackson’s music has been an indelible part of our cultural consciousness. Landmark albums such as Off the Wall and Thriller shattered records, broke racial barriers, amassed awards, and set a new standard for popular music. While his songs continue to be played in nearly every corner of the world, however, they have rarely been given serious critical attention. The first book dedicated solely to exploring his creative work, Man in the Music guides us through an unparalleled analysis of Jackson’s recordings, album by album, from his trailblazing work with Quincy Jones to his later collaborations with Teddy Riley, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Rodney Jerkins. Drawing on rare archival material and on dozens of original interviews with the collaborators, engineers, producers, and songwriters who helped bring the artist’s music into the world, Jackson expert and acclaimed cultural critic Joseph Vogel reveals the inspirations, demos, studio sessions, technological advances, setbacks and breakthroughs, failures and triumphs, that gave rise to an immortal body of work.

Book excerpt: From the back cover: In 1992 legendary writer Jim Shooter and newcomer artist David Lapham teamed up to reinvent a staple of comic book storytelling - the superhero team genre. Their darker approach more realistically portrayed superpowered teenagers. The characters behaved like real people, blurring the line between good and evil. The heroes were flawed and sometimes loathsome, while the villains were often noble and frighteningly identifiable.
