Download or read book Jane Knox Hyder written by Jane Hyder and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For Jane Hyder 'art and faith come from the same place'. Working in a fauve-expressionist style, her paintings draw on highly poetic, richly illustrative imagery. Narratives expressed through symbolist gestures, the paintings' surfaces are expressions of a joie de vivre that seek and deserve comparison with Chagall, for, like Chagall, Jane's paintings point to an underlying belief that art is a state of soul. Incorporated into this belief is the proximity of the spiritual to the material; her recent works are not merely paintings but art objects whose surfaces cherish both the decoration upon them and their physicality. These are colourist prints and paintings that could be transported as though personal icons, but, embedded with the histories of their own production, their iconography becomes suggestive of the importance of the art-making process to the artist. The narratives here are thus double-sided. There are both the narratives if the art objects' histories and the narratives which the paintings themselves depict. Above all, these are prints and paintings which translate faith through the creative process into art and in turn offer a gift, a generosity of spirit, from the artist to the viewer." Download or read book World Development Report 1994 written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1994 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Development Report 1994 examines the link between infrastructure and development and explores ways in which developing countries can improve both the provision and the quality of infrastructure services. In recent decades, developing countries have made substantial investments in infrastructure, achieving dramatic gains for households and producers by expanding their access to services such as safe water, sanitation, electric power, telecommunications, and transport. Even more infrastructure investment and expansion are needed in order to extend the reach of services - especially to people living in rural areas and to the poor. But as this report shows, the quantity of investment cannot be the exclusive focus of policy. Improving the quality of infrastructure service also is vital. Both quantity and quality improvements are essential to modernize and diversify production, help countries compete internationally, and accommodate rapid urbanization. The report identifies the basic cause of poor past performance as inadequate institutional incentives for improving the provision of infrastructure. To promote more efficient and responsive service delivery, incentives need to be changed through commercial management, competition, and user involvement. Several trends are helping to improve the performance of infrastructure. First, innovation in technology and in the regulatory management of markets makes more diversity possible in the supply of services. Second, an evaluation of the role of government is leading to a shift from direct government provision of services to increasing private sector provision and recent experience in many countries with public-private partnerships is highlighting new ways to increase efficiency and expand services. Third, increased concern about social and environmental sustainability has heightened public interest in infrastructure design and performance.

Download or read book The Defence Capabilities of Small States written by Shang-su Wu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparison of Singapore and Taiwan presents an interesting case study for those wishing to understand how small states struggle to overcome their strategic disadvantage. Since their independence, Singapore and Taiwan have faced numerous challenges resulting from their relative strategic disadvantage. They have struggled to overcome vulnerable bases, an unformed conception of state, and weak governmental institutes for defence. While territorial borders are difficult to change, both states have focused on nation building, economic growth, and military build-up in order to overcome their predicaments. During the Cold War, both states employed similarly authoritarian policies to preserve their survival. However, in the post-Cold War era, Taiwan has experienced political and economic weakness in the face of the rising China, while Singapore, with its polity of one-party domination, has continued to strengthen its hard and soft power. This book examines the unique context for each case, drawing comparisons and offering analysis of their distinct approaches.

Download or read book Suicide in Asia written by Paul S.F. YIP and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over one million people worldwide commit suicide every year, and more than 60% of suicide deaths occur in Asia. However, very little reliable information is available to permit a good understanding of the multifaceted and complex issues involved in suicide prevention in the region. This book provides detailed analyses of suicide in eight Asian societies. While each society has its own unique characteristics, Asia as a whole is under rapid transition and transformation, and the associated stress and depression are both closely linked to suicide. Hopefully, a better, evidence-based understanding of suicide will enable governments and non-government organizations to establish effective and culturally sensitive suicide prevention strategies for the region.
Download or read book The Plastics Paradox written by Chris Dearmitt and published by . This book was released on 2020-03 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Plastics Paradox is the first and only book to reveal the truth about plastics and the environment. Based on over 400 scientific articles, it dispels the myths that the public believe today. We are told that plastics are not green when in fact, they are usually the greenest choice according to lifecycle analysis (LCA) We are told that plastics create a waste problem when they are proven to dramatically reduce waste, for example replacing 1lb of plastic requires 3-4lb of the replacement material We are told that plastics take 1000 years to degrade when in fact a plastic bag disintegrates in just one year outdoors We are led to believe that plastic bags and straws are an issue when in fact they barely register in the statistics The list goes on... Everything you believe now is untrue and we are making policies that harm the environment based on bad information. After reading The Plastics Paradox you will be able to make wise choices that help create a brighter future for us and for our children.
