Book excerpt: A remarkably versatile man, Jan van der Heyden (1637-1712) was the preeminent painter of cityscapes in the Netherlands and the first artist to capture all the beauty of the urban scene. Notwithstanding his achievements as an artist, Van der Heyden was even more famous in his own time as an inventor and engineer: he invented firefighting equipment that set the standard throughout Europe for two centuries, and he perfected the streetlamp. The book includes a general discussion of Van der Heyden’s work, entries on 40 of his paintings, illustrations of about 100 of his paintings, as well as supplemental drawings and prints. Focusing mainly on the bustling city of Amsterdam, he also recorded other Dutch, Flemish, and German cities with a brilliant palette and exceptionally detailed technique. Often innovative in his composition, he was the first artist to create imaginary scenes by rearranging existing city views and known buildings.

Book excerpt: Jacques Goudstikker (1897-1940), a Jewish Dutch art dealer, took over his father's gallery in 1919 and quickly made his presence felt. Introducing a more international thrust to the gallery and demonstrating a keen business acumen, Goudstikker became one of the most successful art dealers and tastemakers in Amsterdam between the Wars. He entertained lavishly and highlighted his wares in his country homes and gallery while also developing relationships with collectors and museums at home and abroad. Tragically, Goudstikker died in flight from the Nazis in 1940, and his enormous collection of art, including more than 1,200 Old Master and nineteenth-century paintings, was confiscated by Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring. Not until 2006 was a portion of this looted art returned to Goudstikker's heirs by the Dutch government. Featuring some 200 color illustrations, this book examines Goudstikker's legacy, reveals the dramatic story of the seizure of his art, and discusses the legal case that finally brought its restitution. Forty works from his collection are catalogued in full detail.

Book excerpt: Political satire has been a primary weapon of the press since the eighteenth century and is still intimately associated with one of the most important values of western democratic society: the right of individuals to free speech. This study documents one of the most important moments in the history of printed political imagery, when political print became what we would recognise as modern political satire. Contrary to conventional historical and art historical narratives, which place the emergence of political satire in the news-driven coffee-house culture of eighteenth-century London, Meredith M. Hale locates the birth of the genre in the late seventeenth-century Netherlands in the contentious political milieu surrounding William III's invasion of England known as the 'Glorious Revolution'. The satires produced between 1688 and 1690 by the Dutch printmaker Romeyn de Hooghe on the events surrounding William III's campaigns against James II and Louis XIV establish many of the qualities that define the genre to this day: the transgression of bodily boundaries; the interdependence of text and image; the centrality of dialogic text to the generation of meaning; serialized production; and the emergence of the satirist as a primary participant in political discourse. This study, the first in-depth analysis of De Hooghe's satires since the nineteenth century, considers these prints as sites of cultural influence and negotiation, works that both reflected and helped to construct a new relationship between the government and the governed.
