His most famous works include oil on canvas paintings like Battle of Grunwald, paintings of numerous other battles and court scenes, and a gallery of Polish kings. In addition to historical events Matejko made also several portraits. Altogether he authored 320 oil paintings and several thousands drawings and watercolours. Finally he painted a monumental polychrome in St. Mary's Basilica, Kraków (1889-1891). His most important paintings were hidden during World War II. After 1945 majority of his works was found and subject to restoration. His works, disseminated in thousands of reproductions, have made him one of the most famous painters in Poland, and became almost standard illustrations of many key events in Polish history.

Book Conversations with God Jan Matejko s Copernicus

Download or read book Conversations with God Jan Matejko s Copernicus written by Christopher Riopelle and published by National Gallery London. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Largely unknown outside his homeland, Jan Matejko (1838-1893) is widely regarded as the national painter of Poland, where he is revered for his huge, teeming, minutely detailed depictions of key moments in the nation's history. This volume, by Polish, British, and American experts, introduces the artist to a wider public with this monumental painting. It celebrates the achievements of Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543), the first astronomer since the Ancient Greeks to realize that the sun rather than the earth stands at the center of our planetary system and that we rotate around it. Rather than depicting Copernicus at the moment of his discovery--his chart of the heavens is already there by his side--Matejko chose to paint him on a rooftop in his hometown of Frombork, discussing the matter with God. Unlike Galileo three-quarters of a century later, Copernicus was never excommunicated for challenging the authority of the church; indeed, enlightened clerics of the day celebrated his breakthrough.

Book excerpt: "Cavanaugh's scholarship is distinguished by several qualities: detailed knowledge, a rare comparative awareness of adjacent disciplines, and of course, a substantial, synthetic knowledge of modern artistic developments in Western Europe and the U.S. Out Looking In will be relevant to a large and varied public."--John E. Bowlt, author of Forbidden Art: Soviet Nonconformist Art, 1956-1988 "This is an essential book for scholars of modernism who are eager, in the wake of post-structuralist and post-modernist reevaluations of the construction of modernism's history, to broaden discussions beyond a narrow French orientation. It will serve as an important stimulus for rethinking European art in general in this period."--Linda Dalrymple Henderson, University of Texas, Austin "Clearly written and well organized, [Out Looking In] will be the indispensable reference work in English on early modern Polish art. Cavanuagh's treatment, based on solid research and critical insight, is illuminating."--Vojtech Jirat-Wasiutynski, Professor of Art, Queen's University "The visual richness and comprehensiveness of Out Looking In will make it a primary resource in the West for images of early modern Polish art as well as arguing for the centrality of Polish art to the discussion of European modernism. This is revisionism at its most insightful."--Wendy Salmond, author of Arts and Crafts in Late Imperial Russia "This book goes a long way in correcting our geographically narrow understanding of European modernism. While arguing for Poland's place in the annals of artistic modernism, Cavanaugh elegantly manoeuvers between the sensitive issues determining national artistic identity and the international context of this debate."--Myroslava M. Mudrak, Ohio State University "This is one of the most important critical analyses of turn-of-the-century Polish art. Out Looking In will inspire a broad response from a wide international cricle of historians of art, literature, and artistic culture."--Wieslaw Juszczak, Art Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Letters and Art History Department, University of Warsaw

Book Giammaria Mosca Called Padovano

Download or read book Giammaria Mosca Called Padovano written by Anne Markham Schulz and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author of statues in the major churches of Padua and Venice, Giammaria Mosca was among the leading sculptors in northern Italy during the second and third decades of the sixteenth century. In 1529 Mosca was summoned by the King of Poland to erect his tomb in Cracow. From 1533 until the artist's death in 1574, documents at regular intervals record important commissions to Mosca throughout Poland from the Polish royal family, as well as from prominent members of the nobility and ecclesiastical hierarchy. Many of Mosca's inscribed and documented monuments survive in their original site and state and testify to the sculptor's key role in the diffusion in Eastern Europe of Italian Renaissance ideals. In both native and adoptive homes, thus, there exists a substantial body of extant and documented works by Mosca; indeed, Mosca is virtually unique among &émigr&é Renaissance sculptors for the completeness with which both halves of his career are documented and therefore offers the perfect test case for assessing the effect of emigration from the center to the periphery. Yet no one has ever asked whether Mosca's move to Poland changed his art. For the first time, Anne Markham Schulz not only explores the effect on Mosca's art of new patrons and materials, of different artistic conventions, functions, and traditions, but also sets Mosca's emigration within the context of those cultural exchanges between Italy and Poland that contributed fundamentally to the formation of the Polish Renaissance. This book represents the first comprehensive study of Giammaria Mosca in any language. It includes more than 260 detail photographs of all of Mosca's sculptures; almost every one has been made anew, many from specially constructed scaffolds. In addition, another 109 photographs illustrate comparative works. All documents concerning the artist, most never published before and many quite unknown, are reproduced in their entirety. There is an exhaustive catalogue of all works attributed to Mosca or his shop and a comprehensive bibliography of scholarship in ten languages.
